This year's Caps Care Classic has already raised more than $175,000 to reach the $1 million mark in all-time contributions.

Perfect, clear skies and crisp fall weather dominated the day at the Caps Care Classic on Monday in Springfield, Va. But as nice as the weather was, the best news of the day came as the generosity of the participants helped the tournament reach the $1 million mark in all-time contributions to the Children’s National Medical Center and Washington Capitals Charities.

Chairman and majority owner Ted Leonsis, head coach Bruce Boudreau, assistant coach Dean Evason and every player on the Capitals roster participated in the tournament. Center Michael Nylander led the winning group, working with teammates Rick Kay and Pete Kirsch to shoot a winning score of 59 in the scramble format at Springfield Golf & Country Club.

Unconfirmed report from 'old time hockey':-)

TSN had some video of the golf event, including Leonsis offering Ovechkin $100 Billion dollars (from the bank of Zimbabwe), if he could ace the same hole again.

From mets.auction.mlb.com:

On Monday, Oct. 6, Capitals majority owner Ted Leonsis, the Southeast Division champion Washington Capitals including NHL Most Valuable Player Alex Ovechkin and NHL Coach of the Year Bruce Boudreau, will join Capitals alumni, Senator Ted Stevens (R-AK), Senator Jim Webb (D-VA), Representative Tom Davis (R-VA), Representative Steny Hoyer (D-MD) and other notables, local broadcasters and athletes for the fifth-annual Caps Care Classic. As the official golf tournament of the Washington Capitals, the Caps Care Classic raised nearly $850,000 for local charities during the first four years of its existence.

Proceeds from this year’s tournament will benefit pediatric research and provide all families, regardless of their ability to pay, access to quality healthcare at Children’s Hospital. Washington Capitals Charities also will benefit from your generous contributions, with your kindness being spread to other charities supported by the Capitals. These are worthy causes that help children in the D.C. area and beyond.
