Son of Slap Shot

By NATHAN SANDALS, NYT Slap Shot, Nov. 11, 2008:

Senior Christian Hanson scored the eventual game winner on the power play early in the second period. If that last name looks familiar, it should. Hanson is the son of Dave Hanson, of “Slap Shot” fame. Hanson may not be quite as funny as his father, but he’s developed into a solid two-way player. The center has four goals and two assists in nine games this season. And don’t worry, Hanson isn’t shying away from the penalty box — he’s second on Notre Dame with 12 minutes so far.

I am telling you, this is what Semin probably thinks about Ovechkin, "What's so special about Ovechkin... blah, blah, blah..." :-) Semin's idols are Bure, Datsyuk, Ovechkin's idols are Owen Nolan, Jarome Iginla. Semin wants Datsyuk as a center, Ovechkin, as a kid, rooted to San Jose and played NHL video games with Owen Nolan centering him.

Russia never had such a physical player like Ovechkin and maybe Slap Shot movie is the reason why. Ovechkin is a prototypical North American power forward, like some GM said, "He is as Canadian as Gordie Howe". I saw some discussions on Russian hockey forums like "Where this guy came from?"

Ovechkin remembers watching Slap Shot with his Dad when he was a kid, and his Dad said "If you want to play in NHL, you have to go through rough stuff like that, you have to be physical".

So maybe in a way Ovechkin is a son of Slap Shot too.
