Old Fashioned Cherry
If you haven't read it already, here are some reactions to Cherry.
By Chris Zelkovich, Toronto Sun, Mar. 2, 2009 "Hey, isn't it Cherry-canning season yet?":
When the CBC went begging for money last week, there were suggestions from some corners that this marked the darkest hour in the public network's history.
Those who witnessed Don Cherry's virtuoso performance Saturday might agree that darkness has already been surpassed.
After an evening of sheer lunacy, combined with the usual liberal dose of xenophobia, the CBC shouldn't be explaining why it needs millions. It should be explaining why it continues to give this guy a platform.
...Then he attacked Washington star Alexander Ovechkin for his exuberant goal celebrations, which he's certainly entitled to do.
By HOWARD FENDRICH, AP, Mar. 2, 2009 "Ovie laughs off Cherry":
WASHINGTON -- Alex Ovechkin smiled that gap-toothed smile of his and laughed off Canadian TV analyst Don Cherry's criticism of his exuberant goal celebrations.
"He's a funny guy and old guy. He likes old-fashioned hockey," Ovechkin said yesterday, after scoring his NHL-high 46th goal in Washington's 6-2 loss to Florida.
"He's not interesting to me, so he can say whatever he wants. I don't care about him," Ovechkin said.
AP: Mar. 2, 2009:
WASHINGTON - Canadian TV analyst Don Cherry criticized reigning MVP Alex Ovechkin’s exuberant goal celebrations. And that prompted Washington Capitals coach Bruce Boudreau to fire back at the bombastic personality.
“He’s a friend of mine. . . . I just think that even the smartest people in the world are wrong sometimes, and I just thought he was wrong,” Boudreau said yesterday. “Because he doesn’t know Alex like we know Alex.”
Boudreau knows Cherry and his take on things well: Cherry is writing the forward for Boudreau’s autobiography due out later this year.
“He’s pro-Canadian, and there’s 33 million Canadians that love that, as anybody would,” Boudreau said. “And if I was sitting at home, I’d be going, ‘Yeah, yeah, Canada!’ But I just happen to be in the same business as him, so I see it a little differently.”

Any reaction from Russia?
Cherry can be slightly entertaining occasionally, but his irrational Europe/European players bashing is very stupid, very racist and it base on absolutely nothing. If he thinks "Euros" are soff, maybe he should try to tell that Chara for example... And he fails to understand that some of the best players in the league have been and are Europeans, mostly Russians
He calls Chara a Monster since he can't call him soft. :-) Enough said.
This is all just coming up now because Ovie is becoming more popular...when Crosby was considered better no one payed any attention to Ovie and no comment was payed to his goal celebrations and hits...because he's in the spotlight more now people can come and complain about him for every little thing. I don't think most of the players in the NHL have a problem with it...sure, not all of his hits are totally clean-show me one player who is clean all the time, and sometimes his celebrations go a little overboard...but I think his celebrations come from a love of the game not from his wanting to show up the other team...if he was Canadian this would not be an issue. The joy that he has for hockey should be a lesson to other players in the NHL and fans as well...right now everyone should just apprectiate his hockey skills and personality while he's in the league.
