Don Brennan: Give me Alex Ovechkin any day

By Don Brennan, Ottawa Sun, May 26, 2009:

Pittsburgh advancing means more Sidney Crosby. Oh I know, he's such a great player, and all you people just love him to death. Frankly, I'm tired of watching him. Mostly, his interviews. He says nothing and does so unenthusiastically. But to me, his game lacks pizzaz as well. Give me Alex Ovechkin any day. He's a much more spectacular player and, unlike Crosby, he looks like he actually enjoys the job that gives him enough money to buy anything in the world he wants.

lol This guys is hilarious! isn't this the same dude who said that he wish that someone would slash Crosby in the ankles so that he doesn't have to see him play?

HAHAHAHA!

I don't like Crosby by any means, I mean I am the girl who launched operation pacifier on him during the last caps/pens home game, and i'm also the girl who launched the operation crosby hates hats during game 5 of the playoffs (handing out stickers to put on Caps hats that said "crosby says don't throw me") but give credit where credit is due. it's no coincidence that his team has made it to the finals yet again, 2nd yr in a row. I mean he was a very strong force in our series, and as much as I hate him, he's a phenominal talent, and he hasn't just ridden his teams coat tails to the finals, he is a huge reason why they are playing for the cup and we're not. Do i think he is better then Ovechkin? hell no! do I think he's is the best in the NHL? Hell No! but... he is an elite player no doubt and wishing him harm is just as stupid as people wishing ovie harm for what they perceieve as cockyness because of his celebrations.

I'm over the bashing Crosby bit, because frankly the guy is too good to bash, maybe 2 yrs ago there were some legit reasons, but I mean there is no denying the guy deserves a lot of credit for reaching the finals.

Marge,
Crosby played great in the first two games vs. Ovechkin and Capitals. What everybody forget is that both games Pens lost. So, yeah, he played great, but it didn't do any good for Pens. Malkin was invisible in the first two, but when he started playing, Pens started winning. That's the difference between him and Crosby.

Crosby only plays great against Ovechkin and Capitals. W/o Ovechkin he is ok. Malkin > Crosby for sure. So Crosby is where he is: 3rd or 4th, which is not bad.

I'm going to have to respectfully disagree with you. Crosby might not have been as dominant in the canes round as he was against us, but the guy still racked up assists and even had some goals. I mean that's like saying ovie getting an assist one game is like he is non existent. he might not have won the games for his team, but he sure did help them win thats for sure, we all know winning a game doesnt mean scoring the gwgs for ur team. ovie has won games for us and not even gotten onto the scoresheet.

*side note* i cringe and quiver at my words because I am actually defending Crosby. I need a shower.

I have to disagree with you tj. There's a reason why Crosby is a +12 at this point and Geno a +3 when they have the same amount of points.

Take Crosby out of the equation and the Penguins don't make it to the finals this year (The same can be said about Geno).

Your argument doesn't hold any value because the Penguins outshot and outchanced the Caps in everygame. The real factor was Varlamov being a stud in the first couple of games but eventually being broken. (He made miraculous saves in the begining of the serie).

Without Varly, they would have been swept (or destroyed 4-1).Varly made it a series.

Being outshoot doesn't mean winning. You saw it, Caps outshoot Rangers, so what? They could've easily been ousted by NY. Who could've remember that Caps outshoot them. Same with Pens, Varly could've win game 7, it didn't happen, but he could. And then Caps could be where Pens are now.

All I am saying is that Crosby has not been dominant since game 3 vs Caps. That's all. Yes, he scored when Caps were down 0:2, but that was a weird game 7. Could've been other way easily like in game 6.

Obviously Pens are better team because they are more balanced, their d is better than Caps d, they can play trap if needed...

That doesn't mean Crosby decided the outcome of the series. He was a foot soldier, just like Scuderi, and when Crosby played his best game, his team lost. When Malkin played his best, Pens won. That's the fact. And as soon as Ovechkin was gone, Crosby never had the same tenacity. For him winning against Ovechkin was the matter of life and death.

The one thing I really hate is how everyone keeps saying that Crosby is the better than Ovie because he made it farther into the playoffs. They pull that "Crosby's a better leader because he got his team past Ovechkin" bull, but a guy can only push and motivate his team so much. The rest is up to those individual players on whether or not they step up their game and go out and win.

One player doesn't determine the outcome of a game or a series. There are six guys on the ice for a reason.

In game 3, he had an assist on the go ahead and game winning goal.

In game 4 against the caps, he scored the game winning goal, had an assist and was named 1st star. Geno had zero points.

In Game 7 he got the first goal and an assist on the game winning goal. I don't see where "yeah he scored when the caps were down 0-2" since he opened the scoring. (oh and he was named 1st star again). If you mean "he added a dagger when the score was already 5-1", then I understand.

So he has been dominant since game 3.

That said, he was outplayed by Geno against Carolina. 9pts to his mere 7pts in 4 games. The team still managed to win although Geno was held pointless last night.

I gotta say, if we look at the Campbellnomics (which I find appalling) Crosby seems to be dominating.

No matter how good Crosby is he is still boring and that sticks in people's minds.
