Ovechkin the only player ever to be on both the EA and 2K Covers?
2K Sports announced today that Maurice “Rocket” Richard Award winner and Hart Memorial Trophy candidate, Alex Ovechkin of the Washington Capitals, will be featured as the cover athlete and spokesman for the highly anticipated hockey video game, NHL 2K10. While leading the league in goals scored for a second consecutive season, Ovechkin has become of the faces of the NHL in only his fourth season, and will bring his electrifying personality and unmatched passion for the game this year to NHL 2K10.

In celebration of the announcement, Ovechkin will be participating in a first-time ever public outdoor hockey motion capture session Tuesday, June 16 at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas from 8:30-11:30pm PT. The event is free and open to the public to watch, as synthetic ice will be laid down to create a special hockey rink, and brand new motion capture technology, VICON’s MX-T series, will be unveiled for the event that has never been used before. Ryan Kesler from the Canucks and Randy Hahn, commentator from the Sharks will join Ovechkin.

"It's a good time to be Ovi! It's an incredible honor, and I look forward to working with 2K Sports to make NHL 2K10 the most fun and amazing hockey video game experience ever. I can't wait to put some of my moves in there," said Ovechkin.
Game producers will be putting Ovechkin through a number of dynamic drills to capture his signature style data for NHL 2K10, and he will also be signing autographs and taking pictures with the expected hundreds of fans in attendance.
With the NHL Awards Show scheduled to take place on Thursday at 4pm PT at the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas, Ovechkin is one of three finalists to receive the highly coveted Hart Memorial Trophy, an annual award given to the player judged to be the most valuable to his team. The winner is selected in a poll of the Professional Hockey Writers' Association in all NHL cities at the end of the regular season. Ovechkin, the reigning 2008 Hart Memorial Trophy award winner, has already won the Maurice “Rocket” Richard Award for leading the league in goals scored this season as well. In partnership with Nintendo to support NHL 2K10 for Wii, Ovechkin is also scheduled to be accompanied to walk down the red carpet during the NHL Awards Show by Nintendo’s most iconic video game character, Mario™.

Ovechkin, also known to fans as “Ovie,” was the first overall selection in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft and is one of the most heart pumping players to watch in the NHL today. After winning the Calder Memorial Trophy for Rookie of the Year, Ovechkin went on to lead the NHL during the 2007–08 season with 65 goals and 112 points to capture the Rocket Richard and Art Ross Trophies. That season he also won the Lester B. Pearson Award as the top player voted by the NHL Players' Association and the Hart Memorial Trophy as the league's MVP. He is the first player to win all four awards, including all in the same season, and has participated in the NHL All-Star game in 2007, 2008, and 2009. This past season, Ovechkin led the NHL again with 56 goals, winning his second Rocket Richard Trophy in as many years, joining Jarome Iginla and Pavel Bure as the third player to win the award twice, and the second player after Bure (2000–2001) to win the award in back-to-back seasons.
