Caps lost the game tonight vs. Rangers 2:3. Donald Brashear and Brandon Sugden fought twice, it was interesting to see how Sugden would handle Brashear, more about it later.
Ovechkin had the highest ice time (23:26), more than any defenseman (Green 21:38), 7 hits and 1 assist. To me he looked rusty, maybe it was also back to back game, but his timing was off for sure. This is expected, but I also felt like he lost a bit of his explosiveness. (Remember that episode when he was chasing Drury after his giveaway? Drury was barely moving his legs. Update: To be fair I think it was at the end of PP when Ovi and Green stayed for two shifts for entire PP). Everybody noticed Ovi's upper-body bulk when he arrived to the training camp. Even his Dad said that "Sashka has matured a lot".
The 2009/10 Capitals media guide lists Ovechkin's weight at 233 lbs, last year it was 220 lbs! A noticeable jump by 13 pounds. This doesn't make anybody faster, even a Superman named Ovechkin. The hockey database lists Ovi at 212, which is definitely his first 2005/06 NHL season. EuroHockey.net has him at 200 lbs, probably in 2003-2004.
Here is Alex' weight over the years:
2003/04: 200 lbs
2005/06: 212 lbs
2008/09: 220 lbs
2009/10: 233 lbs
The announcers actually were saying his weight was 235 lbs.
Back to Donald Brashear and Brandon Sugden, I found a very good interview from last year with Sugden...
Here he talks about the confidence that allows you to keep the optimal distance in the fight, the guy definitely knows the subject...
Second fight, Brandon got worn out at the end a bit, but he started really well...
And then there was more about the optimal weight in his interview:
Here's the hope that Ovi will be 229 at Christmas. :-)
