Ovechkin via satellite on Red Square

Ovechkin addresses the Red Square crowd from Washington, DC:
Hello, Red Square, hello, my country, hello, Sochi! Hello from Washington, DC! I am happy that I can share with you my emotions. For me and for the boys of my generation the role models were Tretiak, Maltsev, Fetisov, Larionov. Their victories had inspired the whole world.

Let's go, Sochi-2014!

Dec 2, 2009: Ovechkin addresses the Red Square crowd from Washington, DC via sattelite on the Ceremony of the Sochi 2014 Olympic games (starts at 7:25)

H/t to our field reporter Emily.

Emily:I love how AO just skated over to the camera in the middle of practice at Kettler. A man with a foot in two worlds for sure.

He's still Russian for sure but maybe a bit more American than he thinks...

Reporting live from Washington DC, I'm Emily.

TJ:I will add that Ovechkin sounds incredibly good in Russian. As if he is a professional actor, commentator or a talking head. A perfect short speech. No wonder fans in Russia were impressed when he was as a color commentator for one game of the Russian junior league in August. As I said back then, Joe Beninati should be scared for his job. :-)

Back in studio, TJ.

I agree with Emily. I've always felt Ovie's personality is VERY American and that's why we call him Alex and not Sasha. Most of the Russian nicknames don't fit him and when they do it's less than 5% of the time.

Having said that, his soul and worldview are very Russian. I don't sense they will temper over time, but we'll see. He's young and hopefully his career will be long.
