Varley and a little baby

Dinara Kafiskina, Sports Daily, June 25, 2009:

There are quite a few eminent Russian forwards and defensemen over the pond. As of Russian goalkeepers, it's a bit different... Khabibulin, Nabokov, Bryzgalov. But now one can add Simeon Varlamov to this company. Varley, this is how Simeon is called in the States, has forced to talk about himself in North America during Stanley Cup playoffs.

Simeon, I remember you once said that playing in the NHL was your long-standing dream. And finally your dream came true, isn't it?
It's unbelievable (smiles). I've enjoyed every day of staying with Washington, enjoyed every second I was on ice. We had a great team, everyone supported me.

Were you pleased with the season a hundred percent?
Of course. After all, I finished it in the NHL and was the number one goalie in the playoffs. Before the start of the season I could only dream about it.

You were trusted to play in playoffs, this is worth a lot. Were you nervous?
Oh yeah (smiles). And my main task was to cope with the emotions. I was very nervous. But after two games I was playing on autopilot.

What was the most memorable moment of the season?
The seventh game of the first round when we won against Rangers and passed the first round. The price of any error was very high, and nobody wanted to be eliminated for a second time in a row at the very beginning.

And what about your awesome save in the Pittsburgh series, don't you remember?
Oh yeah! It really turned out very nice. It's a life time memory. Perhaps if Crosby could've shot to any other place, he could've scored. But it ended with Sydney giving it to my stick (smiles).

Was Washington's Coach Bruce Boudreau satisfied with you?
Yes. I talked with him at the end of the season. Our coach warned me that next season no one will give me a place in the net, I'll have to earn it.

I know how the mass media in America are able to "promote" the player, especially a successful one. Did you feel like a star?
Yes. There, the journalists talk to you before and after team's training or the game. So I felt the pressure. And as soon as I started playing as number one people started buying my jerseys. Anyway, if I feel like a star, I am only a mini star (laughs). I played only 13 games in the playoffs, and 6 during the season. What can be said... The real stars are Ovechkin, Fedorov, Kozlov.

When there's a lot of attention, is it good or bad?
Honestly speaking it's a distraction.

Do you have the army of fans already? Are those mostly girls? You are a nice looking guy...
Thanks for the compliment, but I have a girlfriend, so that I no longer look at the representatives of other sex. And I don't have a whole army of fans, I am still working on it (smiles). People approach me, take autographs, pictures. And it's nice, of course, when you see in the audience fans wearing jerseys with my name.

The fans overseas, I would say, are somewhat special. Can you remember anything funny?
Once a woman with a baby approached me. It seemed to me that the baby was not more than a month old..

And?...
No, no... This is not what you may think (laughs). She simply gave me a baby and said, "Could you sign please?" And I like, "Okey! Where?" And then I see a baby is wearing a tiny jersey, which, as it turned out, this woman had sewn by special order and the jersey had "Varley" and my number. I was in shock, and, of course, I thanked her.

And how do you communicate with the fans? Are you fluent in English now?
I thought that after the first season I'd speak fluent English. Well, if I'd spent the entire season in the farm club, I'd probably speak well. I was the only Russian in the team. But when I moved to Washington I spoke mostly in Russian.

You never know what is better ...
Is it better to play in Washington, learn and speak no English, than to play in the farm and learn to speak English? (laughs)

Do you know that Viktor Kozlov will play for Ufa next season and Sergei Fedorov also may be playing in the KHL?
I've heard. Of course, it is a pity that the two most experienced players have left, the leaders. It is a great loss. I think that it will affect the team. Washington didn't sign them... I can't comment on that. But the guys were very nice and helped us all in the locker room and on the ice.

Your alma mater "Lokomotive" was this year in the finals...
I know, I was following as much as I could. Saw the videos, the goals.

I can't help to ask you about your leisure time. How do you like the States' capital?
I like Washington a lot and I have gotten used to it. However I still live in apartments, which I have to share with one teammate or another (smiles).

What do you do at leisure time?
We'll go out, have dinner. What else? In general it's better not to write about it... (laughs).

Why? This is the most interesting part...
To be honest I spend almost all my free time with my girlfriend. She is from Russia, but lives in America.

Ovechkin at MMVA

 Yahoo music, Jun 22, 2009:

Appearances from Lautner induced the expected feverish shrieks - one fan wore a homemade cardboard hat with Lautner's picture and a plea for an autograph - while Washington Capitals star Alexander Ovechkin provided a surprising moment when, after being asked how he would celebrate winning a MuchMusic award, he effortlessly hoisted VJ Tim Deegan over his shoulder.

Lady Gaga had some sort of fireworks coming out of her bra....

Ovechkin was turned away by Las Vegas doorman

Alex Ovechkin at the meeting with Russian President Dmitri Medvedev, May of 2008.

Imagine that, Alex was able to sneak in to Kremlin in flip flops, but was stopped in Vegas.

Las Vegas Review-Journal, June 19, 2009:

Alex Ovechkin, the NHL's most valuable player, doesn't get stopped very often.

But a doorman at Lavo, the Palazzo hot spot, can say he accomplished what a lot of goalies rarely do.

Ovechkin was turned away at the door Wednesday night when he and two friends showed up wearing flip flops on their way to, of all places, a fashion show.

Before the Russian superstar moved on, someone at the door recognized him, and he and his friends attended Jeremy Roenick's Label Junkie party that featured his Muze T-shirt line in Lavo's nightclub. He was wearing shredded jeans and a T-shirt.

About 30 NHL players attended the event, including Mats Sundin of the Vancouver Canucks and Sheldon Souray of the Edmonton Oilers.

Clubs sometimes make an exception to their dress code rules. Sometimes they don't.

Shaquille O'Neal, wearing shorts and sneakers, was asked to leave Light nightclub (now The Bank) at Bellagio about seven years ago.

Eric Trump showed up at Light with more than a dozen male friends on his 21st birthday in 2005. He was turned away in part because Light had a policy that limits parties of men to six, to keep the female ratio high, and because he played the dreaded "don't-you-know-who-I am" card.

Lavo recently turned back Terrell Owens because of dress code issues. Tao did the same to NBA star Dwyane Wade.

Ovechkin, the league's goal-scoring leader, scored great room accommodations. He has been staying in the Crib Suite at the Palms Fantasy Tower. The suite features a hydraulic bed, a DJ booth and a pool table.

He showed up at the awards after-party at the Palms Pool & Bungalows in the company of a stunning cocktail server from Encore's XS nightclub.

Ovechkin gets Hart, Pearson, Richard trophies (video)

Washington Capitals' Alex Ovechkin, of Russia, holds the Hart Memorial Trophy, for being the most valuable player to his team, at the National Hockey League awards in Las Vegas Thursday, June 18 2009.

The Pearson Award presented to Ovechkin by Russian legends Vladimir Konstantinov and Igor Larionov. Konstantinov was paralyzed in an auto accident after winning the Stanley Cup with Detroit in 1997, but walked to the podium with the aid of a walker in one of the highlights of the night.

Ovechkin takes home Hart, Pearson, Richard trophies, makes NHL's All Star team for the fourth time in a row. "It’s pretty important when people and players give you this. I don’t want to stop. I want to be the best next year," said Ovechkin.

Marge reports from Ovechkin's poker tournament

Ovie was so nervous the whole time

NHL.com:
"I want to win," Ovechkin said minutes before he took part in the NHL Charity Shootout Presented by PokerStars.net, a charity poker tournament. "If I don't win, I'll still be happy because I'm nominated. There's lots of players and I'm in the top three and that is a pretty good result."

As for his competition, Ovechkin says he did not watch the other two Hart finalists battle it out in this spring's memorable seven-game Stanley Cup Final between Malkin's Pittsburgh Penguins and Datsyuk's Detroit Red Wings. The Penguins won in seven games, coming back from a 2-0 series deficit. Malkin, the leading scorer in the playoffs, won the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP.

"I try to forget hockey for a couple of months and concentrate on my vacation," Ovechkin told NHL.com. "I don't want to see how the guys celebrate. I want to be in that spot, I want to win Stanley Cup."

And, he says that the training for next year's quest will begin soon. He has a few more weeks of fun and sun -- including this week's stop in Vegas -- on his vacation itinerary and then it becomes all business again in a month or so.

"Next year, it's my dream to be in the Final and take the Cup," Oveckin told NHL.com. "So, it is going to be fun."

By Tarik El-Bashir, Washington Post, June 18, 2009:
The past two days have been a blur for the bleary-eyed Ovechkin, who landed in Las Vegas following an 18-hour flight from Moscow in the wee hours Tuesday morning.

He's been on the go ever since.

Hours after arriving, the 23-year-old Russian was formally announced as the cover athlete for the NHL 2K10 video game in an event hosted by Caesar's Palace. During the unveiling, Ovechkin was outfitted in a high-tech spandex suit, which the videogame engineers used to capture Ovechkin's motions and mannerisms, including his controversial "hot stick" celebration for the game.

Yesterday, a jet-lagged and weary Ovechkin did a television interview and a photo shoot with his apparel company before joining a poker game with Eddie Olczyk, Jeremy Roenick and Mats Sundin, among others, at the Rio. Ovechkin ended up winning $2,000 for Most Valuable Kids, the charity Ovechkin partners with in Washington to purchase tickets to Capitals games for underprivileged children.

Apparently, Ovechkin plays poker the way he plays hockey -- all out, er, all in.

Ovechkin's "hot stick" celebration motion captured by 2K Sports (Update)

By Ryan Greene, Las Vegas Sun, Jun 17, 2009:

Alex Ovechkin, (right) of the Washington Capitals, and Ryan Kesler, of the Vancouver Canucks, get suited up to skate in front of Caesars Palace as NHL 2K10 holds the first ever outdoor motion capture session on Tuesday (Photo by Justin M. Bowen).

2K Sports, while finishing up its annual hockey game set for a September release, put on a motion capture display for the public and media alike Tuesday night right in the heart of the Las Vegas Strip. It was the first ever outdoor motion capture session.

Kesler and Washington Capitals superstar -- and 2K10 coverboy -- Alexander Ovechkin donned skin-tight black suits covered with motion sensors and added some finishing touches to their characters for 2K's latest stick-and-puck installment.

"Skating on the Strip -- I never thought I'd be doing it," Kesler said. "But it's an opportunity I couldn't pass up.

"I'll tell my buddies when I play that I did that move on the Strip. They should be here. Write that down. They should be here and they're not."

They missed quite a scene.

To kick off a week of NHL festivities in Las Vegas, with the highlight being Thursday's NHL postseason awards ceremony at The Palms, Kesler and Ovechkin took turns scoring from various spots on the plastic and wax surface, then performing their patented celebrations for inclusion in the game.

As for the simulation of their scoring skills Tuesday, however, the highlight came when Ovechkin, skating to the chants of 'Ovi, Ovi, Ovi' from beyond the iron fences, performed his much-maligned 'burning stick' routine after scoring from up close.

After scoring his 50th goal of the season in March, the 23-year-old Caps winger put his stick down on the ice and pretended to warm his hands over it as if it were on fire.

It will look identical when NHL 2K10 is released, patented gold laces and all.

"It was pretty fun to score 50 goals and I tried to celebrate," Ovechkin said. "I don't care what people say, what people think. I say life is good, life is beautiful, I'm enjoying my life."

Ovechkin toyed with the crowd some, bobbing his head to the chants at times and flashing his signature gap-toothed grin before exiting for a night of celebrating his first night out in Vegas with his entourage.

2K's hope with this year's game is that it will become the life of several parties.

"I think people really just want to be able to sit on the couch, grab all their friends, open up a couple of beers and play hockey," said Jason Argent, vice president of marketing for 2K Sports. "And I think that's what we've been able to do.

"That's what gaming's about. That's how social gaming started. We all watched Swingers, right?"

Argent, of course, was referring to the Vince Vaughn flick of the mid-90s, which involved a famous scene in which Vaughn and friends get caught up in a heated game of NHL 94 -- a cult favorite among both hockey and gaming fans -- on Sega Genesis while enjoying a couple of beers before heading out for the night.

The game made NHL star Jeremy Roenick a pop culture icon, thanks to a legendary Vaughn quote from the scene.

So, which virtual player has the edge: NHL 94 Roenick or NHL 2K10 Ovechkin?

"I'm biased, but I've got to go with Ovi," said Argent, who confessed to spending countless hours in his early 20s playing NHL 94. "We're hoping it's the same vibe, but a lot, lot, lot better simulation version. I hope I can have as much fun (with 2K10) as when I played that game."

Ovechkin the only player ever to be on both the EA and 2K Covers?

 By Mark Vasquez, DKCnews.com:

2K Sports announced today that Maurice “Rocket” Richard Award winner and Hart Memorial Trophy candidate, Alex Ovechkin of the Washington Capitals, will be featured as the cover athlete and spokesman for the highly anticipated hockey video game, NHL 2K10. While leading the league in goals scored for a second consecutive season, Ovechkin has become of the faces of the NHL in only his fourth season, and will bring his electrifying personality and unmatched passion for the game this year to NHL 2K10.

In celebration of the announcement, Ovechkin will be participating in a first-time ever public outdoor hockey motion capture session Tuesday, June 16 at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas from 8:30-11:30pm PT. The event is free and open to the public to watch, as synthetic ice will be laid down to create a special hockey rink, and brand new motion capture technology, VICON’s MX-T series, will be unveiled for the event that has never been used before. Ryan Kesler from the Canucks and Randy Hahn, commentator from the Sharks will join Ovechkin.

"It's a good time to be Ovi! It's an incredible honor, and I look forward to working with 2K Sports to make NHL 2K10 the most fun and amazing hockey video game experience ever. I can't wait to put some of my moves in there," said Ovechkin.

Game producers will be putting Ovechkin through a number of dynamic drills to capture his signature style data for NHL 2K10, and he will also be signing autographs and taking pictures with the expected hundreds of fans in attendance.

With the NHL Awards Show scheduled to take place on Thursday at 4pm PT at the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas, Ovechkin is one of three finalists to receive the highly coveted Hart Memorial Trophy, an annual award given to the player judged to be the most valuable to his team. The winner is selected in a poll of the Professional Hockey Writers' Association in all NHL cities at the end of the regular season. Ovechkin, the reigning 2008 Hart Memorial Trophy award winner, has already won the Maurice “Rocket” Richard Award for leading the league in goals scored this season as well. In partnership with Nintendo to support NHL 2K10 for Wii, Ovechkin is also scheduled to be accompanied to walk down the red carpet during the NHL Awards Show by Nintendo’s most iconic video game character, Mario™.

Ovechkin, also known to fans as “Ovie,” was the first overall selection in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft and is one of the most heart pumping players to watch in the NHL today. After winning the Calder Memorial Trophy for Rookie of the Year, Ovechkin went on to lead the NHL during the 2007–08 season with 65 goals and 112 points to capture the Rocket Richard and Art Ross Trophies. That season he also won the Lester B. Pearson Award as the top player voted by the NHL Players' Association and the Hart Memorial Trophy as the league's MVP. He is the first player to win all four awards, including all in the same season, and has participated in the NHL All-Star game in 2007, 2008, and 2009. This past season, Ovechkin led the NHL again with 56 goals, winning his second Rocket Richard Trophy in as many years, joining Jarome Iginla and Pavel Bure as the third player to win the award twice, and the second player after Bure (2000–2001) to win the award in back-to-back seasons.

Ovechkin comments on steroids and bodyguards

Here are some funny quotes from KP.ru interview with Ovechkin.

Recently the police arrested steroids dealer who said that he supplied them to the players of Washington Capitals. Can you comment on that?
And what is to comment about? Don't you see that I am all covered with steroids needle marks? But to be serious, the only dope that I allow to myself is a glass of beer after the game. I love it.

How are you getting behind the wheel to get home?
After a glass of beer the alcohol level in blood does not exceed the level allowed in America.

During playoff series against Pittsburgh 17-year-old Penguins fan threatened to kill you...
I wouldn't even pay attention, but the club management assigned to me two bodyguards who were following me everywhere. Well, I am glad that they are not in Moscow and I can freely move around with friends.

By Pavel Lysenkov at the Kharlamov trophy award ceremony, June 9, 2009, SovSport.ru:

Alexander, are you coming to the pre-Olympics training camp which will be held in late August at Hodynka arena? Have you already asked Washington management's permission?
No, not at all. This will be in the summer before the training camp. I don't think that there will be any claims from their side. We'll go to the camp, spend some time and train together, what's wrong with it?

But Chicago's goalkeeper Nikolai Khabibulin noted that the wrong time was selected, at the end of August he already would have to start in America for the training, rather than fly to the other side of the world for three days.
I do not know about Kolya [Nikolai]... Well, I will be in Moscow until the last day, I'll go to Washington on September 12 or 13. I've already agreed that I'll be at the pre-Olympics camp.

Can you name three best NHL Russians of this season? Not just the regular season, but also the playoffs.
First place -- Malkin. Then Pasha Datsyuk and Andrei Markov.

What about Alexander Ovechkin?
I don't count myself. You may think that I stand above all (Alex laughed).

Who do you think will win Stanley Cup?
Detroit.

You are not a fan of Penguins, are you? There are more Russians in that team.
You shouldn't look at the passport. I think the guys have already accumulated a lot of fatigue. I can see how they all play with injuries, on pain killers. Maybe they think about ending the season as soon as possible...

Are you ready for the next year to be in their place?
We were ready in these playoffs. But it was not the fate... We couldn't stop Pittsburgh. Apparently we didn't have enough experience. Penguins players have a lot of experience. They have learned from the last year the way to the Stanley Cup finals, and how to evade the pressure. But Detroit is the most experienced team in the NHL. They all know how to deter the star players like Malkin and Crosby.

Did you envision these teams in the finals?
I thought it would be Boston and San Jose. But as you know one team lost in the quarter finals to Carolina, the other lost even in the first round to Anaheim. So it doesn't mean anything where would you finish in the regular season. I say again, Detroit will win. These guys know how to play with fatigue. But I am not rooting for anyone in the finals. This is simply a prognosis.

Viktor Kozlov has signed a three-year contract with Salavat Yulaev.
He told me that he was leaving Washington. I wish him only the best of luck. Together we have spent two great years. We played on one line. He is a great partner, an awesome guy.

And also Sergei Fedorov goes to Magnitogorsk.
I don't know about that. I haven't spoken to him yet. But Sergei promised to come to Moscow soon.

What are your vacation plans?
Going soon to Las Vegas to NHL awards ceremony...

Are you nervous over the ceremony?
Not really. It is already known that I am the best sniper. Got one trophy. And how it will continue, I don't know. The main thing is that the Hart Trophy has three Russian nominees: Malych [Malkin] and Datsyuk. One of us will be recognized as the most valuable hockey player.

And still who it will be?
I would like to get the Hart (Ovechkin laughs). And if I am excluded, then let Malkin get it. I'm not greedy.

Who would like to play with on the same line at the Olympics?
I don't know, let coaches deal with it. But, probably they'd put Malkin and Sema (Semin) on my line. And maybe Datsyuk will center me.

Have you managed to watch a film about Kharlamov, who was played by Alexei Chadov?
Yes, Sema and I watched it a bit when we were on the road in Miami. Of course I personally was not familiar with the Valery Kharlamov. Chadov played him as good as he could. All was done at a high level. Although it was difficult for him, Alexei can barely skate.

And who would you agree to play if you were invited to play in the movie?
Of course, Valery Kharlamov (Alex smiled). I am receiving his award for the fourth time.

Update: video and more pics in the next post...

What's up with Ovie?

Not much, but here are some pics:

Фото: Мила СТРИЖ

By Регина Севостьянова for SportsDaily.ru, June 6, 2009:
Looking back on his trip to the Beijing Olympics for the launch of 'The House of Vancouver Olympics friends', Washington's forward said, "I am even upset that I will be in Canada on the ice, rather than as a fan. Will have to train hard, while others will run for beers". However, when his friends from Beijing's trip left, Ovechkin explained that he was kidding. By the way, Capitals forward has already agreed to participate in the pre-Olympics training camp in Moscow, which is likely to be held at the Khodynka arena on August 29 -- September 1.

Ovechkin: "I am not even going to say how much I would like to help the team. I just really want to win. The Olympiad is held once in every four years. And it is such a chance! When I was in Beijing, it was super, these were cool five days. So many stories from that time that you can remember now..."

What kind of assessment can you give yourself for this season in the NHL?
We made a step forward in principle. But a step back too. I don't know whether the backbone of our team will be intact for next season. I do not know whether Serega Fedorov, Vitja Kozlov, Jose Theodore will remain. But our team was chic, competitive. And if you talk about the season, I took one trophy at least. So everything is fine.

One of the most discussed topics in the course of this season's been your relationship with Evgeny Malkin. Now, when you have declared a truce, are you supporting him in the finals?
It is, in principle, no difference for me who will win, Detroit or Pittsburgh. But watching some game excerpts on the Internet, it seemed to me that Detroit should win. And Pittsburgh is not a weak opponent.

What do you think about the future of Phoenix? Most likely the team will be moved to another city. Does Washington feel any of those problems?
I think Washington is not threatened by those problems because a lot of people attend the games. Why Phoenix has problems? Their fans don't go to the games because the team is bad, there are no achievements, there are no playoffs. And most importantly, there are no stars. When you have stars you can be profitable even without playoffs.

Varlamov's interview to Samara's newspaper

By Eugene Mozoletsky, Samarskie Izvestia (SI), June 6, 2009 "Goalkeeper for million dollars":

Our SI's guest is the goalkeeper of the National Hockey League's Washington Capitals Simeon Varlamov. The rising Star of the NHL, the product of Samara's hockey, Varlamov's made a real sensation in the best hockey league of the world last season.

You can safely call the 21-year-old Washington Capitals goalkeeper one of the major discoveries of the 2008/09 NHL season. At once a promising young goalkeeper became the number one goalie of one of the teams playing in North America. After playing very few games in the regular season Simeon became something more than the half of the team. SI offers you the exclusive interview with the rising star of the NHL, the first Samarian who made it to the best hockey league in the world.

Samara

Simeon, how did you become a hockey player?
I was born in the village "116-km". The first time I've put on the skates was when I was seven. Prior to that my dad and I were going to the games at the CSK VVS (Central Sports Club of Air Force) arena. At one of these games is the fall of 1996 it was announced that the boys of my age could sign up to play hockey. I wanted to sign up. My father supported me, probably to ensure that I'd become friendly with physical fitness. He took me to the "Kryliya Sovietov" outdoor stadium, which was at "the Physical Cilture" street, because the hockey arena didn't have enough space for children's teams.

So your team was playing at the outdoor rink...
At first the conditions were still tolerant. But a year later the "Kryliya Sovietov" stadium has ceased to exist as such. All the the care about the ice at the hockey rink was laid on the shoulders of our parents. They showed resourcefulness wonders when at night they'd open the taps with hot water and pour it to the rink. The parents were cleaning the ice after the snow storms, repairing rink boards, were making the metal hockey goals. Back then CSK VVS had virtually no money. The uniforms, the hockey equipment, all was bought at the expense of the parents.

Did they pay for the road games expenses?
Yes, the parents drove us on their own cars. My father on that occasion even bought a roomy minivan. Our parents at their own risk had to ask for leave from work. And it was giving them a lot of grieve. My Dad worked as a chief accountant at one of the big companies of the city, and his frequent absenteeism was not welcomed by the director. But what he could do?

How did you get to Yaroslavl?
It seems that in 2000 we were playing well at the tournament in Kirovo-Chepetsk, and I was recognized as the best goalkeeper. Soon after came the invitation from Yaroslavl, but my father did not want me to go to unfamiliar city.

One year later the director of Locomotive hockey school once again invited you to Yaroslavl...
At this time my parents listened knowing that it would happen sooner or later. They ventured to send 13-year-old son to the city where the good hockey players were raised. With all due respect to Samara's hockey, it became apparent that there were very few possibilities for the development in my home city.

And why it didn't work out with Togliatti?
Their coaches felt that they had enough of good goalkeeper's prospects.

Yaroslavl

Did you regret at the beginning that you've made the choice in favor of Yaroslavl?
At first it was very hard at the training camp, off the ice, and I was even considering to return to Samara. But it was me who decided to conquer Yaroslavl, and I had to endure. We had a strong youth team. We outplayed everyone of our age, twice became the champions of Russia. Locomotive is very productive on working with young kids, all-established in detail.

When was your debut at the highest level?
In Moscow, in September 2006, at Setun. The Head coach Vladimir Yurzinov was not afraid to put me on the game against the Wings, and put Egor Podomatsky as a backup. We won in overtime 5:4.

You have shown your best in Russia in March - April 2008. Five shutout games in playoffs, including two in the finals against Salavat Yulaev, it was phenomenal...
I am very grateful to the team's coach from Finland Kari Heikkilä. I achieved a lot under his expert guidance. I've always felt his constant support. He is also an excellent psychologist.

Back then you became vice-champions. And could you win gold medals?
Yes, we could, but we failed at the very important game. If I'd play a bit more attentive, others a bit more accurate... But it turned out everyone was a little bit wrong, and we yielded.

During 2007/2008 season you had on your helmet a beautiful image of Yaroslavl church on one side and Washington's White House on the other...
There's a simple explanation. After 2006 draft I became a potential NHL player. I was chosen in the first round by the Washington Capitals.

You could stay another year or two in Russia. Were you unhappy with the terms of the contract with Locomotive?
I was offered a decent money in Russia. But try yourself in the NHL is a dream of any hockey player. I felt that I had excellent chances to play there. At the end of last year's season I was 20 years old, the most suitable age. And Washington Capitals management constantly showed an interest in me.

Can you tell how much is your contract with the American Club?
Overseas the contractual commitments of athletes in professional leagues are transparent. Just look at the respective league's site. The standard three-year NHL contract for the rookie is 900 thousand dollars.

Hershey

Having arrived to the United States you've ended up in the Washington's farm-club Hershey Bears, which plays in the less prestigious American Hockey League (AHL). Why?
Here's how it was: in September of last year playing for Washington in a friendly game against Carolina, I pulled a groin. Two weeks after that I did not go out on the ice, trained only on the ground. Goalkeeper's coach said that I showed up well in the training camp, but due to the injury I should spend time playing for the farm club. In early October I was forced to move to Hershey which is the two-hour drive by car from the U.S. capital.

What is the city of Hershey?
The population is slightly more than 13 thousand people. This is actually not the city, but more like a village or town with two storey buildings all over. The chocolate factory produces, in my opinion, and not only in mine, the best chocolate in the world. We rented a good apartment, but close to home were only fields and highways. Sasha Ovechkin's friends helped me to buy Lexus, a middle level class car by American standards, so that I could quickly get to Washington.

Were you lonely in Hershey?
I was not alone, my father lived with me for two months. He helped me in everything. In the kitchen he was creating a culinary masterpieces. Imagine, in a short time, he cooked sixty different dishes, for many of those I had no idea! Then my sister came over.

Can you compare the second largest American league with NHL?
The hockey players are not that skilled, but there's a lot of physical play. The largest contract for the AHL rookie is $62,500 a year, a modest amount. The business organization is economical, no flights. We traveled only by the bus to the road games . Two or three times a week is not a rarity. The most long trip to Providence took eight hours. It's very hard to recover after these bus tours.

Was you goal to become the best in the farm-club and then storm the NHL?
Yes it was. If everything could go well in a month and a half I should have been given a chance to continue my career in the NHL. I played 27 games for the farm, we won 19 in regular time, and only lost one game.

WASHINGTON, DC

In December of last year due to the injury to Jose Theodore you were summoned from the farm-club, and debuted in the NHL game against the legendary Montreal club who had a centennial celebration last season. What were the memories of the game?
It was on December 13. I remember I was very worried. 22 thousand spectators at the super stadium in Montreal! The tremors in my knees had disappeared in the middle of the first period. At the end I got 32 shots out of 33, we won, but journalists have recognized me the first star of the game. In a local newspaper they wrote that I showed "cat's reactions and athleticism".

How were you welcomed by the team?
Very cool. In the team there are a lot of Russian hockey players: Sanja Ovechkin, Sanja Semin, Vitja Kozlov, Sergei Fedorov. I've often traveled to visit Ovechkin. His mother had constantly cooked for me and I am very thankful for that.

Since February you were essentially in Washington ...
I took the place of Jose Theodore's backup, Brent Johnson, who had injured his thigh. I won't hide, I was waiting for the moment when I could get a chance to become the number one goalie. It happened after Theodore let four goals in the first Stanley Cup game against the New York Rangers. I played 13 of 14 games in playoffs. I had two shutouts in two games against the New York club.

You have more games in playoffs than in the regular season. Could you imagine at the beginning of the season that will be playing so well in the Stanley Cup?
To be honest, no. I had injuries. If not for them, sure, I could play 50 games a season.

The seventh game of 1/4 finals against Pittsburgh became your last...
It didn't work out well for my play from the beginning. The coach made the right decision replacing me in the second period. I was terribly disappointed, I didn't want to finish the season. I was in a good shape, but the tight schedule killed me. A dream to win the Stanley Cup remains a dream.

Do you come to Samara once a year, in the summer?
No, much more. When I played in Yaroslavl I was able to get to my home city for a week in winter, for the New Year's eve. I was born in Samara, there began to play hockey. I know from my father that CSK VVS can cease to exist this summer, but it should not be allowed.

What are your immediate plans?
I'll be in Moscow and Yaroslavl for three weeks. Then I'll come back to Samara to rest. And will start slowly to prepare for the new hockey season. I'll fly to the United States in September.

Simeon Varlamov's Dossier.

Born: April 27, 1988 in Samara. Height: 186 cm, weight: 82 kg. Position: Goalkeeper.

CSK VVS alumni. His first coach was Alexander Endulov.

Played for Lokomotiv-2, Yaroslavl (2004-2006, the first league), Lokomotiv Yaroslavl (Russian SuperLeague 2006-2008, 99 games, 219 goals allowed)
In North America: in the AHL for Hershey Bears (2008/09, 27 games, 65 goals allowed) in the NHL for Washington Capitals, 19 games, 35 goals allowed).
