Ovi, get back to DC, enough already

The Orange County Register. Feb. 26. 2010:Also heard that even though the other Russian NHL players are back with their teams, Ovechkin is still here – because his nation wants him to carry the flag in Sunday’s closing ceremony. Ovechkin is sort of the poster child for the 2014 Olympics in the Russian resort of Sochi.

24 hour Vancouver via Emily:Celebrities kept the Olympic party going in Vancouver on Thursday night. Alexandre Ovechkin, captain of the Washington Capitals and member of the Russian Olympic hockey team, was spotted at Republic with his teammates celebrating the end of their competition in the Olympics.

Good lord. He's gonna get himself in trouble.

I suspected that the Russians would use him for the closing ceremonies, but with all the PR gaffs they might want to rethink that.

Plus, I hope he has informed the Caps since Boudreau wants everyone at Sunday's practice.

Getting back to the familiar and back to a competent organization will be good for Ovie.

Not that anyone asked my opinion, but I'm fine with this. Ovi has worked very hard this year, and he has earned a few days of vacation.

If Russia has asked him to represent them one last time in an oficial capacity and if he still wants to, I wholeheartedly approve.

Furthermore, I want to see the VAN fans' reaction as he enters the arena.

Well, the next game is Wednesday and that is an away game. If he stays for the closing than he doesn't get back to DC until Monday. That is a very tight schedule.

The way things are going he would rest better and be less on edge at home away from the media and paparazzi hounding.

Just out of curiosity, anyone know if Mean Lars has stepped on DC grounds yet? Or is he bar hopping with the Russian Machine in Vancouver?

I'm with Emily on this. I think this will be good for Ovi, and will give him a sense of closure to these games and it will make it easier for him to move forward and get his mind back on his NHL game. I think it will also give his country and himself hope that things will go better in 2014 in Sochi.

If any player on the Caps has earned a little extra time off, it's him. Especially after he put the team on his back and carried them to a win over the Pens that not so long ago sunday.

To the anonymous who posted about the tight schedule, keep in mind that Ovi would have the exact same schedule if Russia had advanced to the gold medal round.

The puck drops on that game on Sunday at noon (Vancouver time), medals are awarded following the game at a little before 3pm, closing ceremonies at 6pm, then one last party before the entire Olympics gets on planes on Monday morning and flies home.

Two other things to consider:

a. Ovi has always been expected to rejoin the team on Tuesday. He's welcome to return at any time, of course, but his official team schedule is marked "Tuesday." Varly has already rejoined the team, but he is still fighting for the starting job and needs as much practice as he can get.

b. The Caps' first opponent, the Sabres, will have one very tired goaltender, as Miller will be playing in that gold medal game on Sunday, flying home on Monday, rejoining his team on Tuesday, and playing against the Caps on Wednesday.

Emily:

Good to know Tuesday is on his official schedule.

Thanks.

Update: Now I'm hearing reports he flies back today and rejoins the caps for practice tomorrow.

This could be good or bad..It would be nice if he could let lose and have a good time, but I fear that more camera's and fans will be in his face. Alcohol and freak outs never mix well, I just hope he keeps it together!

Field Reporter Emily,

I hope your updated report of Ovi flying back to make it to Sunday's practice is a correct report. I think that would be a wiser decision.

While it would be a honor for Ovi to carry the Russian flag for the Closing Ceremonies, I think it would be better for him to get out of Vancouver sooner rather than later.

Agree with Martha. Alcohol and freak outs are a bad combination. And with nothing for him to do in Vancouver until the closing ceremonies, the temptation to go to the bar is greater.

Now Puck Daddy sez AO is likely to have a role in the Sochi portion of the Closing Ceremonies, and Twitter is overflowing with rumors that he will a) carry the Russian flag, b) receive the Olympic torch on behalf of his country, or c) both.

Either or both would be entirely appropriate and I'll be thrilled if that's the case.

Let's hope someone has the dvr working so TJ can post the footage here.
