A winger makes more assists than a center? C'mon, Mr. Farber!
How about Ovechkin's lead in assists? A winger makes more assists than a center? Since when? I think it's much more surprising. And Ovi missed 8 games, Sid wouldn't be close. Ovi has the best goals and points per game totals in the league. (see below)
Obviously Crosby has surprised everyone this season. Sid the Kid doesn't even have a decent wrist shot and his slap shot is probably the worst in the league as well. But, hey, he goes and scores garbage goals, good for him. But comparing Crosby to Ovechkin is like comparing a vulture to an eagle.

You obviously don't watch penguins games. It's kind of funny that your opinion of Crosby is still based on what he did as an 18 year old.
He score as many nice goals at he does garbage ones. Ovie scores garbage goals and empty netters too. That's hockey.

@ Anonymous 2, Ovie's my favorite player but I'm a hockey fan first and discrediting Crosby would make me a player hater lol, which I'm not.
Up until this year, Crosby's shot was pure shit but I have to admit that this year I've seen him snipe some pretty decent goals. And that's when I stopped hating.
It is that it is fairly common for wingers to have more assists then centers. Think Jagr for example. Iginla who was pretty much setting up his teammates last year. A prime Selanne or why does Saint-Louis have more assists than Stamkos (the center) and Stamkos more goals? I could go on and on.
Does Malkin suck as a center? Ovie has more assists them him as well... Don't see him in the hl reel much lately, do we? Perhaps, hell has finally frozen over and Ovie has become a better passer than both Malkin and Crosby lol.
I realize that Malkin and Crosby don't have any wingers. If they both had someone with the level of talent of Backstrom for instance, I'm pretty sure they would have more assists. But hey, that's the choice their gm made ;)

He'll never shoot as well as Semin, Ilya, Ovie and Kovalev, but he's definitely improved for a pass first center.
That's a good post and without insults. No question, Crosby has found the ways to score and it is surprising, esp. with no wristshot and not so good slapshot. He scores mostly garbage goals, and occasionally dekes the D and puts a backhand. As I said, good for him.
When I said a center should have more assists than a winger, I meant two players of comparable class. Jagr was the best player in the NHL at some point, so you need to find a comparable center at that time that was close. But again, he was, like Ovechkin is now, the best NHL player.
Crosby and Ovi are of comparable class, that's why it is a surprise for me that Crosby has less assists than Ovi.
