Ovechkin returns to Moscow with a new friend

From RT.com:

The Head of the Russian Ice Hockey Federation, Vladislav Tretyak, said Dmitry Medvedev called the team’s coach after the match and found some words to cheer him up.

“The boys fought desperately. Aleksandr Ovechkin is now getting stitches; a few others are also being treated. Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has called Vyacheslav Bykov. He congratulated the team on their silver. He said that two golds and one silver medal in the last three years is a good result. The most important thing is not to ruin the team, as happpened in the 90's,” he said.

LifeSports, May 24, 2010:

Alexander Ovechkin was the last to appear at the airport after returning from the World Cup, which ended yesterday in Germany. It turned out Ovechkin had to go through the airport's animal inspection for his new acquisition, a two-year old German shepherd. Ovechkin's father Michael Victorovich, who came to meet his son together with his granddaughter, picked the dog from his son and took it out to the street.

"This is a pedigree German shepherd," rejoiced Dad. "We called her Ghera."

Without even leaving the terminal Ovechkin's dog barked at the police dog, it's got to be a good guard for the family. Ovie's behaviour wasn't the best. He silently proceeded to the car of his father, threw the bags in the trunk and muttered, "I'll go with Sema," referring to his friend and teammate Alexander Semin. The hockey player refused to give any comments.

How was Ovie's behavior not the best? He handled it perfectly -- ignoring the press is the right thing to do.

I would have said that his mood wasn't the best. His behavior was impeccable. I didn't see him throwing a fit or doing anything stupid. He was just not in a good mood at all. People seriously need to quit dissecting his actions and behavior. Yes, I know he's famous... but he's a famous athlete. Anyone knows, no matter how proud he is of his silver medal, he's still going to be a bit upset over not winning the championship. Jeez.

Well sometimes your moods do get the better of you but Ovechkin isn't behaving badly. He's not breaking hockey sticks over the knee or hurling them on the floor - he's being very mature about what happened.

By saying "The most important thing is not to ruin the team" Is that just a way for Medved to say - don't replce the KHL players with NHL players and end up with an all NHL roster like USA and Canada in Vancouver?

I've never heard about the niece either. But this is Life.ru, they can make up things. Remember the woman whose camera was covered by Ovechkin to prevent filming, was a female paparazzi from LifeSports.ru. They are all over the place. And for some reason they call Semin as Sam. I translated it a Sema (or Syoma) because I've never heard Ovechkin calling Semin as Sam.

The rumor is the next Coach will be Zinetula Bilelyatdinov. He is Dynamo's alumni like Ovechkin and he coached Ovi before. This year he won Russian playoffs with the team AK Bars.

I think he is a better Coach than Bykov, more technical and he is a former d-man. And as we know d wins the playoffs and WC. He is what team Russia needs for Sochi.

I think they meant that Ovie's dog is his father's 'granddaughter.' :P

lol! that makes sense dawn! although now i am wondering what a little girl holding flowers is doing so close to ovie's dad

I was thinking the same thing as Dawn -- wondering if the "granddaughter" referred to the dog since she's female.

Hadn't heard anything about a niece for Ovi. Last I had heard, Ovi's brother had a girlfriend but hadn't heard anything about marriage or children.

Hey,maybe it's Ovi's daughter!

@Anonymous - I am sure you mean the dog. lol. He doesn't have children because he's not married yet. He's made that pretty clear.

I'm wondering if they meant cousin. From photos taken during family outings there seem to be at least a couple of young female cousins and the girl in the photo looks like one of them. Mrs. Ovechkina has mentioned her siblings and their families in passing before.

How in the world did Ovie have time to find a dog in Germany (and why do so)?

TJ, does the dog's name mean anything?

Oh poor Ovie, what a season... It almost broke my heart, when I saw him so sad. But I was also so happy for my team and coutry...
But I'm proud of him not taking his medal off. Yes, maybe I'd do the same as the rest of the team, but... Ovie is simply classy guy. I hope his next season will be better.

Ovie has lost 3 more teeth

Ovie doesn't owe the press any comments, and he certainly doesn't owe anyone a good mood either. I wish people would just get off his back and let him be. Considering how disappointed he must feel about Russia's loss, I find his behavior to be mature and completely impeccable. But the critics still have to crawl out from under a rock and dissect his every move.

As for the new dog in the Ovechkin family, I can relate to this decision completely. Dogs love you unconditionally. They don’t judge, gossip, or talk behind your back. They are 100% loyal and devoted to you whether you win or lose, if you have a good day or a bad one. Gera might just be what Ovie needs right now.

I was just thinking about this post today, and thinking, "wait, I didn't know Ovi had a niece." Glad to see I'm not the first one to think that!

If he had a niece, I think we'd know because I think Ovi would be an extremely doting uncle since various interviews seem to suggest that he wants lots of kids of his own somday.
