Ovechkin is rewriting NHL record book

csnwashington.com, June 24, 2010:
LAS VEGAS -- Washington Capitals left wing Alex Ovechkin, who becomes the first player in National Hockey League history voted a First Team All-Star in each of his first five seasons, highlights the players named to the League's First and Second All-Star Teams for 2009-10.

Ovechkin surpassed the mark of Montreal Canadiens Hall of Fame goaltender Bill Durnan, named in his first four seasons from 1943-44 through 1946-47.

Voting for the All-Star Team is conducted among representatives of the Professional Hockey Writers' Association at the end of the regular season.

2009-2010 NHL First All-Star Team

G Ryan Miller, Buffalo Sabres

D Duncan Keith, Chicago Blackhawks

D Mike Green, Washington Capitals
C Henrik Sedin, Vancouver Canucks
RW Patrick Kane, Chicago Blackhawks
LW Alex Ovechkin, Washington Capitals

2009-2010 NHL Second All-Star Team

G Ilya Bryzgalov, Phoenix Coyotes

D Drew Doughty, Los Angeles Kings

Ovi:
Let me finish, I am not gonna leave until I will thank my coach, my GM, Mr. Leonsis and entire Washington Capitals organization.

And that's why we love you, Alex...

WOW! Thanks for all the great Ovie pics and video interviews.

How long will it take the Great 8 to overtake Luc Robitaille as the highest scoring LW in NHL history? I'm along for the ride to watch and see it happen!

I think he bypassed lucky Luc like two years ago.

Congratulations, Ovie! <3

@TJ: I wasn't clear, I meant for his career. I know Ovie has the single season scoring record for LWs with 65 goals.

@ BobbyG OMG! This is a tough one..Luc was my first hockey crush and being from LA it's so hard! I still see Luc around town and he's a class act, but Ovie has also won my heart!!

I remember meeting Luc at a signing in 1994, his PR guy was a jerk and wouldnt let me take a pic of him, but Luc said I could go ahead and take one anyways. I was so nervous to get his autograph, but he grabbed my arm and signed my jersey! I loved it!! I still have it! I briefly gave it away to my friend's husband, but after much protest from my boys, I got it back!

Who are the guys with Ovie on the red carpet? Is the media going to write about him having a posse again? *rolls eyes*

Also, after watching the video of his acceptance speech it makes a bit more sense that they started the music and turned off his mic. After talking about his brother Ovie says thank you and the audience applauds. It sounded like he was done, hence the exit music. Oh, well. Awkward, but Ovie can power through anything.

His thoughts also sounded less organized than in the past, so I wonder if he expected not to get any award.

I don't like the fact that the guys filming Ovi on the red carpet say he's the 2nd best player in the league. Obviously they must have been drinking.

I honestly wouldn't be surprised if he didn't think that he would win anything. He seems like the kind of guy to take things very personally, like losing in the playoffs and olympics... plus the media downplaying his awesomeness.

I'm glad he did though! Also, I'm glad he and Green are one the first all star team! Especially for Green, who got screwed again-though technically could improve his defensive skills.

I can't find a link to this video on either Comcast Sportsnet or the Washington Wizards website or Youtube. During the broadcast of the Washington Mystics game, just after the Wizards drafted John Wall, there was a Welcome to DC video of local athletes, Ted Leonsis, Sheila Johnson and others doing the "John Wall dance" to the tune "Welcome to DC." Alex was in the video doing the John Wall dance.

I take back my previous statement; he was definitely fine looking that evening. TV does not do it justice.

Side note: Patrick Kane seems intent on snagging the sleeziest guy award pawing that poor Playboy bunny in the lounge.

@Martha: I have no such divided loyalties between Ovie and Luc. Ovie is #1 with me now and forever. However, I understand how having two fantasy boyfriends can be a very good thing LOL!

Damn, I looked at the photos and video again and Ovie looks hotter each time I view them. Sort of how a forest fire grows and rages out of control. Such is the nature of Ovie's hotness and the feelings of his female fans.

I agree with those who noted his nervousness and less organized thoughts and words. The more I think about it, based on his answer "What did I win?" when a reporter asked him before the awards what he learned about winning, it does seem he didn't think he would win anything and was genuinely surprised he did.
