Ilja Bryzgalov, Moscow
A very interesting interview with Ilya Bryzgalov, who could've become a Caps goalie a few years ago. And who knows, it might cost Caps a chance to at least play in the Stanley Cup finals. The interview is very long, so only some parts of it were translated.
By Yuri Golyshak and Alexander Kruzhkov, Sport-Express.ru, Aug. 13, 2010:
If someone would offer you to travel anywhere in the world, what would you choose?
I'd rush home to LA. Even if those damned peatlands wouldn't burn, I'd still go. It's been probably five years since I started to associate my home with Los Angeles. It is very comfortable for me there. And I am tired of Moscow. For days you wander around the city and traffic jams are killing you. You stand still for three hours on the Moscow Ring freeway, it's a nonsense... it's pressing on my psyche.
Do you plan to live in Los Angeles in any case?
I love Russia. But while my children are young, it will be better for them to live in Los Angeles.
So a house in the Moscow region makes no sense for you, unless you rent it, is it?
You guessed wrong. That's why I am wandering around the city the whole vacation. I am building a house on Novorizhskoe highway. And it became like the last straw. Well, I myself don't have to go to get supplies, but I follow every builders' step. If the architect offers something, I go and see how it will look. You can't trust anyone, because if you trust them once, you're screwed.
Can't envy you.
Definitely will never get involved in building another house. In Los Angeles we didn't buy the house either, we decided to build everything from scratch. But there it was easier. No one was trying to cheat or steal materials. It was no need to watch for it. The construction was controlled by a reputable company, there was a budget and they couldn't get above that. In Russia the builders can come to you and say, "We ran out of money. The house is not finished."
Are you going to invite your parents to live with you? [It's totally common in Russia to live with elderly parents -tj]
They don't want to go anywhere, neither to America nor to Moscow. All their life was in Togliatti, all their friends are there. My mother still works at a textile factory, my father works at AvtoVAZ. He was not laid off and it seems like the plant got back to business. And in this house near Moscow we plan to do family re-unions. My parents, my wife's, my sister with two daughters. And we got a dog.
What kind?
A huskie. We brought it from America and now the poor fellow suffers in Moscow, just horrible... [Probably referring to smog -tj]
Was it someone's gift?
My kids saw the dog in the store and staged it, Dad's heart melted. Though I knew that to have the dog is harder than the third child. The kids asked for a pony too, but we'll have to wait on that.
Sergei Zinoviev said to us recently, "I socialize with almost no one in the team, I'm bored what hockey players could say.
Absolutely!
Do you share it?
One hundred percent. I'm also not too interested to talk to hockey players, among them I have almost no friends.
Is there at least one hockey player with whom you can talk about your favorite books and be understood?
Maybe Pasha Datsyuk. It is always great to socialize with him, but my close friends are the guys I grew up with.
Are you close with any Americans?
Ed Jovanovski. Amazing guy, you can always come to visit him without a call. Both he and his wife Kersten will only be happy. One word - Macedonians.
There are not too many lovers of the literature like you among the hockey players. What are you reading nowadays?
Just finished "Crime and Punishment". When I'll be back in America, I'll start "The Demons". I love Dostoevsky.
Is it a bit hard to read?
Very easy. Dostoevsky is hard when you are forced, stuffed to it at high school. Then you think, what's the haze? The high school kid is unable to understand what Dostoevsky writes about and for me it was all strange. And now I am going through many of the situations referred to by Dostoevsky. I'm old fashioned, can't stand to read on a computer, I have to hold the book in my hands, to feel the paper.
The girls come to Ovechkin from time to time after the game, lift up the shirts and ask him to sign on their breasts.
It is not happening only to Ovechkin, it's happening to me too.
Did it shock you the first time?
No, that's okay. But I don't sign on underwear.
And you were asked for that?
Of course. The girl'd come, ask to sign something and I'd stare, "What's that?" "This is my underwear..." I'd push it away with my hand and no, I won't sign that. Even if they beg behind you.
Have you understood for yourself why the Olympics in Vancouver were lost so soundly?
Of course. I think for the same reasons we lost the world championship.
From the outside it looked like a purely coaching failure.
I think you have answered your own question.
Have you watched the Olympic quarterfinal with Canada again?
What's to watch, how the Canadians came out and annihilated us? One team was prepared, the other was not ready at all. I went back Phoenix and everybody stared at me with round eyes, "What happened?" No one had a logical explanation. Starting from the general manager and ending with the masseur. And I had to tell.
One professional has a feeling about the other professional. Was it clear for you, at the fifth minute of the game with Canada, how it will end?
Exactly. It was evident even from the faceoff that something was wrong. Incidentally, in the seventh game of our series with Detroit, the same thing happened. On the ice it was Detroit only. I don't know what to do in these situations, when the whole team does not skate, does not think, does not fight. And there is a silence in the locker room afterwards.
You told how the team was preparing for the game with Canada, watched 30-second video and it was all. What should have been done in your opinion?
We should've disassemble the opponent's game. Prepare for that in training. Like simple things, think about building the defense in the middle zone, in our zone, how to get away from forechecking. We needed to work on the power play.
And you didn't work on it?
We did, but so so ... The main thing required for that game was to elect at least some tactical plan. Any team is playing by the certain scheme, and Canada had it. When you look how a team scores the goals, it gives you a lot of understanding how a team plays. And we should have worked on those details.
If before the game we could watch and discuss the Canadians, would it be different on the ice?
I think so, yes. Olympics disappointed us in every sense. The organization was terrible. They were not able to provide the cars to athletes. If you had to go somewhere, you wouldn't know what to do. It was impossible to get a cab, everything was blocked a few miles from the Olympic venues. All you could do was to walk.

Thanks again TJ for another great interview read.
IMO the Capitals could have already gone to the Stanley Cup Finals, perhaps even won, if Breezy was their goalie.
Interesting, he didn't even try to spin doctor Team Russia's coaching failure in the Olympics and World Championships. He all but confirmed my suspicions about what went wrong. I figured they were ill-prepared, but please. Watching only 30 seconds of video of Team Canada? And the same coach will be behind the Team Russia bench in Sochi? What a world we live in.
On a lighter note, I'm asking myself if, given the opportunity, would I have the nerve to ask Ovie for an autograph in the location Breezy described. If I did, I would want Ovie to sign his FULL name--first, middle, and last--to prolong the moment LOL.
I love, love, love Bryz. He should start a book group so he can identify more people to talk to. I wouldn't mind joining. :) We seem to read similar categories of books.
His insights are also refreshing compared to less introspective or canned interview answers. His comparison using game 7 against Detroit was interesting. I've suspected that it is very difficult to motivate an entire team - or at least enough players so that the team is functional - when they come out flat and the opponent is firing on all cylinders. His comments seem to confirm my opinion and provide some vindication for leaders who are attacked for not pulling the team together. Even the best leaders do not find the right motivation at the right time all the time.
As for whether the Caps would be any closer to the Cup if they had gotten Bryz, I don't think so. At the time, the team was not as strong as the team is now. Also, not getting Bryz is connected to having a couple of the key players we have in the system now - with him the Caps wouldn't have been in a position to get those players. Lastly, the Caps goaltending situation isn't the big problem it is made out to be. It is not the team's weakest area.
Love Bryz as well. It started when I first saw the youtube video of him giving an interview about how cold it is in Vancouver. Still cracks me up.
And I love how open he is about everything. I even think it's great that he doesn't really like living in Russia compared to the US.
I like this guy.. its to see he respects his wife and has enough class to sign things he thinks are tacky. It must be so tiresome to have to deal with that when you are just trying to nice.
Its also nice to see another literature reader..
I like his level of candor as other people mentioned.. I know that gets people in trouble when you are straightforward but its refreshing..
I love that idea 0, a hockey book group where we read literature from around the world! ha ha We could as them to sign our books instead of our boobs!
I love these interviews with russian players. they're somehow very refreshing to read :)
Bryz is awesome. And his love for Dostoevsky makes him even more awesome
@O: I meant to say I thought the Caps could have gone much deeper in the playoffs with Breezy in goal AND the rest of the team they have now.
I agree with what others have said about a book club. It is very refreshing to encounter a hockey player as thoughtful and introspective as he is. His comments about team leadership and motivating players are very revealing about how difficult it is to get everyone on the same page to achieve a common goal.
I also admire how he likes and appreciates living in the US. I wish other Russian players shared this view and didn't seem so anxious to leave this country and head back to Russia at every opportunity. *cough* Ovie *cough*
@BobbyG, yes, it would be nice if Ovi didn't rush off to Russia and stay there are long as possible before coming back. I have to wonder if he gets his "Russia is always the best" attitude from his parents.
Funny thing is, Damien Cox was on a radio interview over at Japers' Rink and he felt that Ovi would need to stay in Washington during the summer months to keep his top athelete in DC status. I think that's asking a little too much, but it wouldn't hurt if Ovi did stay around a little longer or come back a little sooner.
Also TJ, you might want to take down the ad for the Ovi book by Cox since apparently it doesn't portray Ovi in a favorable light.
@BobbyG: I would ask Ovi to sign my whole body using finger paint ;-)
Regarding Cox xomment, I doubt that Ovi cares about being the top DC athelete. He is probably more concerned about being the best he can for his team and if being home in Russia helps with that, so be it.
Still can't wait until all the guys come back to DC :-)
@recent Anonymous: do you know for sure that the Cox book on Ovie portrays him in a negative light? I was hoping for and expecting an accurate and balanced view. As much as I love Ovie, I know he's not perfect, but I wouldn't be interested in a predominantly negative book about him.
@bwitch16: oh sister, I like how you think. Let's go to the head of the Ovie autograph line and make things easier for him by providing the paint. There's enough of him to go around for both of us. Who knows, we just might be able to convince him to stay in DC longer and/or come back sooner from his training in the future LOL!
I like this interview also, it's always good to get the different opinions of players or people in general. I think it's great that he doesn't edge away from what he actually thinks -like the fact coaching/management faults them- it's quite refreshing, as you said. I'd also totally join a book club with him!
He's right though, reading books for school is so much harder and often before your mind can understand the subject matter then when you just pick it up. I find reading books later in life, after you read it for school, you get so much more out of it. Though it goes the other way too, I read and loved a book, until I had to read it for school and got BORED and hated it. lol
I don't think it's a problem that Ovie leaves for Russia any chance he gets- I think it's perfectly normal- yes, his parents visit him during the season, but there probably wouldn't be much to do here for him like there would in Moscow with his friends. Everybody else leaves, too. Except Brooks Laich, apparently. I think he's a permanent resident at the Kettler.
It isn't just the Russians though, and I think it's just a home-sickness thing. I mean, you spend the better part of the year in a foreign country, you'll want to go home. Nicklas didn't stay, either. I don't know about Mike Green or Brads, but I'm guessing they're home.
I have a friend who goes to school at Saint Petersburg State, and even though he loves it there- people, culture, language...- he still makes the trip to Canada almost every break he gets. It's just a home thing.
Just as a heads-up: there's an August 14 post on the Girlfriend's site courtesy of fotococktail.ru with two more pics of Ovie and Valeria. There's no mention of when or where they were taken. Based on the pics there could be some truth to the story that he's planning to bring her to the US in September. If I were a gambling person, I'd say Ovie's charity gala on October 18 might be a good place and time for her American debut--a high profile dress up event with the media in tow.
Well, many of my Russian friends condemn Muscovites for being provincial. For those from Moscow, the city is the be all, end all for them and no where else has much merit or holds any interest for them - even other places in Russia. I've heard the same said about New Yorkers - they know little beyond their borough and don't care about the world outside because the world is where they are.
Ovie seems to suffer from some of that. I get the feeling that no matter how well he says he likes the DC area, he'll never really give it a chance and get to know the place and its people. That's sad, since he'll spend his career here and thus the majority of his time over possibly 20 years.
As for books in high school, by that time I had already read most of the books assigned. (Disclosure: I read Machiavelli's The Prince when I was 8.) I had no problem understanding them - although maturity can add layers to what was read at a younger age. The main problem with literature in school is the dissection of every work that sucks out enjoyment and reduces the content to mush.
@BobbyG, My point was that if the Caps had Bryz, then they wouldn't have the current team. Also, I don't think Brzy would have made a difference in how far the team went in the playoffs this year.
Very interesting guy. Thanks for translating, TJ. His comments about the Russian team don't give me any hope in regards to Sochi 2014. I guess we can anticipate in advance how bad it will be for the Russian players to lose at home. Let's hope the Caps win the cup before then so we don't have that messing them up and distracting them.
I've read interviews where Ovie and Semin have said it is very easy to live in the US. Ovie has also said how professionally the team acts toward him and he appreciates that they always do what they say. Gives you the idea that things didn't go so well for him in Russia with Dynamo. So I think they appreciate the US but I don't blame them for wanting to go home over summer break. Semin's parents staying in the US after he left for the WC shows they are adapting.
JP on Japers' Rink has read the Cox book and implies that Caps fans won't like it. He said they'll post some excerpts this week. Cox did mention that Ovie is beloved his interview on the JRR. He mentioned that Ovie took the time to call Pothier after he was traded.
I read an interesting interview by Eric Fehr that talks a fair bit about Ovie. Here's the link to the Fehr interview:

Update: the fotococktail.ru site has tags on the gallery of pics that the two I mentioned are a part--Imperia Lounge, Planimal Weekend, Roger Sanchez and dated 07-10-10. If this is the Roger Sanchez party both Ovie and Valeria are dressed differently than in the first photo that was posted of them back in the day.
@O: I didn't see your post before my last comment. I agree with what you said about the provincial behavior of Moscovites of which Ovie is a prime example. As for the other point about whether Breezy could have made a difference on the Caps, we'll just have to agree to disagree.
Opps I didn't finish my statement about Cox. He said Ovie's teammates love him. He gave the example of Ovie calling Pothier after he left as the sort of thing Ovie did that made him so popular with his teammates. Cox was describing this stuff but I got the idea he didn't agree necessarily, maybe I am wrong. I guess we'll find out when his book comes out.
@BobbyG Did you notice in the second pic on GF site that Valeria is wearing Ovi's "8" necklace?!?
Here's the link: http://www.talk-sports.net/nhl/girlfriend.aspx/Alex_Ovechkin
Thanks for the heads-up too.
@ovicapsgirl: that's the first thing I noticed, and why there could be truth to the story about his plans to bring her to the US.
@AB: thanks for the additional info on the Cox book. I'll have to check Japers' Rink for excerpts. I don't doubt that Ovie's teammates love him, I'm just wondering how Cox will portray him.
Oops, I forgot to include this in my last post. Here's the direct link to the original source of the Ovie and Valeria pics:

Just saw this interview of Nicky and used google translate on it. He mentions Ovie:
But best pal Alexander Ovechkin has not been visiting this summer, either, despite a standing invitation.
"We have called each other a few times, but of course we will meet again soon when training camp starts. He would not leave Moscow in the summer."
http://www.aftonbladet.se/sportbladet/hockey/internationellt/nhl/article7612009.ab
Thanks AB, yep, that's the impression I got from JP himself in the comments section, and he read the whole book. I don't want to waste my money on a book that's mainly gonna trash Ovi.
As BG said, I know he's not perfect and I would expect some bad as well as good with the book, but not mostly bad, especially since Ovi didn't authorize the book and didn't give any interviews for the book.
And thanks for pointing out Valeria wearing his necklace--and that's really is HIS necklace, not just a copy.
Oh, well, if he brings her over here, she's so skinny he can probably just stuff her up in the take-on baggage area.
And maybe Ovi didn't visit Nicky because of her and he didn't want to leave her.
More on the pics: based on what I can understand in Russian--which isn't a whole heck of a lot--the Planimal Weekend occurred on July 24, the week before the photos of O and V at a soccer game. The soccer game photos were a mixed bag, at least I didn't get the impression they looked like a bonded committed couple in them. I also don't recall V wearing the 8 necklace in any of them.
After looking at the newer photos it looks like the 8 necklace is more proportional to a woman's frame. Ovie's necklace looks obviously like a man's jewelry on him, so I would expect if V was wearing his it would look huge on her and it doesn't.
Still, I wouldn't be shocked if she shows up in DC as his prior gfs have done. As I said earlier, the October 18 charity gala would be a good time and place for V to make her US debut in public.
@BobbyG
Thanks for the link to the new pics. Looks like things are going well for Ovie and Valeria. I think these are newer pics from August. Ovie is wearing the black WC hat, which he has only being wearing recently (Kharlamov trophy presentation). Back in July Ovie was still wearing his red caps hat or white caps hat at the soccer game.
Has there ever been so much attention paid to Ovie's jewelry?
OK, upon further inspection of the two new photos, in the first one of O and V he's definitely wearing a neckchain, it's visible under his black tee shirt. In the seoond photo with V wearing the 8, I can't see a neckchain under Ovie's black tee.
In recent photos and videos of him, during Aly Larionov's interviews, a neckchain is clearly visible under his red tee and under his tee during the drive around Moscow. If the chain Ovie is wearing is his 8, it's possible that either he gave it to V temporarily to wear in the Planimal photo or he had a matching 8 pendant made for her.
IMO the only way to know for sure is to see both of them photographed together in such a way that one or two 8s are visible.
@AB: I was still composing my post as you posted yours or I would have answered earlier.
The key here is the date of the new pics. Based on what I could read from the Russian site the Planimal event took place on July 24, not sometime in August but I won't bet any money on it.
Maybe now is a good time to take a poll. What do you think will happen first--Ovie getting married or the Caps winning the Stanley Cup? I'm not betting any money on this either LOL!
@BobbyG I posted before seeing your last comment. Good point about the dates of the pics. Ovie is wearing the same black hat at the soccer game with Valeria. He seems pretty consistent with his hat wearing so we can use that to get a rough estimate of dates.
It's hard to tell about Valeria's necklace. It does hang down kinda low on her and I tried to picture how far it would hang down on Ovie right next to her and it seems about right. Plus it appears to have something else on the chain, which Ovie had on his necklace too. Might that be half of the lucky loonie Ovie got at the 2008 WC when they won gold in Canada? I believe he split the loonie with Ilya Nikulin.
@BobbyG Ovie normally wears 2-3 chains. One is his cross. So if we see him still wearing a chain it doesn't prove anything. Here's a pic of him in March 2010.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/47851621@N02/4406475099/
I personally think we see the Caps win the cup before Ovie gets married:)
@AB: more cyber posting tag going on here!
Yes the date of the pics would tell a lot. And good catch about the same black cap at the soccer game where O and V didn't look especially close IMO.
Of course Ovie being Ovie, he could be messing with all of our heads. He could have let V borrow the necklace for the Planimal weekend photo op, just to throw more gasoline on the fire of the paparazzi's--and fans like us--hyper active imagination LOL.
@AB: more cyber tag!!
OK so Ovie wearing a chain doesn't prove anything. Neither does V wearing an 8. Yes, that's it, Ovie is yanking all our chains getting us worked up in a lather about his jewelry!
About my poll: if there is a God, the Caps will win the Stanley Cup before Ovie gets married LOL!
I'm voting for the Caps winning the Cup before Ovi gets married. Hopefully a bunch of Cups.
Boy did this thread ever go OT!
OK, I'm to blame, so shoot me LOL!
That is Ovi's necklace, but not the one he was wearing this season. The one he's been wearing is the older gold 8 - not the designer 8 from his street wear collection.
Didn't someone guess that Ovi was no longer wearing the chain with the Loonie because he decided it was bringing him bad luck.
If they're still together in Sept/Oct then she'll come to the U.S. just like all the others did. Most of them last half a year. His longest relationship was 2 years and that was before the NHL.
@AB: about that photo you directed me to...warning label definitely required. ROWR!
@recent Anonymous: the key word you stated is IF. And it does seem that Ovie's relationships fizzle out once the gf comes to America. Is it the long separations during the hockey season that spells the death knell to a lasting relationship, or is it the inability or unwillingness of his preferred Russian gf to adapt to living here for even part of the year while he's playing? I'd like to know if the gf was the one who called it quits or if it was Ovie who tired of and dumped the gf or if the parting was amicable and by mutual consent.
