Ovechkin meets "Afera"

Afera (Swindle) is the name of a Russian hip hop group from Voronezh who wrote a song about Alexander Ovechkin.

Here's my and Google's weak attempt to translate some of the lyrics :-)

Goooal!!!
Ovechkin! Ovechkin! With us forever! With us forever!
Ovechkin! Hey, Ovechkin! With us forever! With us forever!
Goooal!!!
Ovechkin! Ovechkin! With us forever! With us forever!
Ovechkin! Hey, Ovechkin! With us forever!

Sasha aims, it is a scientific fact!
To score the hundreds and not the trashy ones
The whole Russia thanks him!
The whole world knows who's number one!
Canadians, Swedes, Czechs, Finns, they all know
The whole world knows - Ovie's On Fire, Ovie's On Fire!
Ovie, Ovie's On Fire!

Chorus
Here's how! Sasha's as strong as russian vodka!
Here's how! Here's how! Here's how!
Here's how! Sasha's as strong as russian vodka!!!!

After becoming acquainted with the group «Afera» Alexander Ovechkin gave an exclusive interview to Sovietsky Sport (August 17, 2010).
"A friend of mine came to America and said that there's a song about me on internet," smiles Ovechkin. "I told him "Come on! Since when?". But then he let me to listen to it... I liked it, downloaded it to iPod. My first thought was to meet with the guys and give them some presents. Fortunately this meeting has finally took place."

Have your parents heard the song before?
No, the first time they've heard it was at "Kharlamov Trophy" ceremony with Sovietsky Sport.

Did you ever imagine that someone would start writing songs about you?
No, I've never thought about such thing. But everything comes with time. If you work hard and you love what you are doing, other people can start writing the songs about you, stories about you. It is very nice.

Did anyone in Washington hear this song?
Not yet. But I think that from now it will played in the locker room sometimes. On the other hand you put the track about myself and say to the boys that someone made a song about me and not about you, maybe it's not very nice.

Can you give the track to DJ who plays music in the arena?
Alas, it's all preset there. He can only play that music.

Do they write songs about you in America?
There is one. It's called "Ovechkin song». It was written by fans.

As far as we know, you already have experience in singing. Maybe you can sing a couple of lines?
No. (smiles) Believe me it's hard. I love to sing another song. "I am a crow", and even then only in karaoke when on vacation with the guys.

What music will be heard in the Washington's locker room in the upcoming season?
Russian as always. There are certain ideas, just need to execute them.

The hockey players who don't know Russian, how they perceive Russian music?
They are ok with it. Most importantly it must be melodic, rhythmic. When you play a quiet music, they don't understand because there are too many words. They start grumbling.

What music do you like the most?
In general I'm a fan of hip-hop. And I like Eminem the most. I am getting high on his music. As of the Russians, I'd note Gufan, Basta. And now it is Afera!

When will you begin skating at Dynamo facility?
A little bit later. Now we skate at Rublevsky highway arena with Ilya Kovalchuk and Nikolai Zherdev.

Update:
My apology if I translated it wrong, I was kind of in a hurry. But it's too late now because great Dan Steinberg, a.k.a. DC Sports Bog, has already quoted me.
Ovechkin used the slang word "тащусь" ("Эминем. Я от него тащусь") and Russian academic dictionary has the following definitions for this word:
получать удовольствие - enjoy

обожать - adore

испытывать блаженство - bliss
Well, just wanted to give you the options if something was lost in translation... :-)

Is that HIS 8 that is back where it belongs?

I prefer the Pummeler song. More creative with the lyrics.

It's cool that Ovie brought the guys presents.

Ovie, you may bring me a Siberian tiger. Since you like to rescue cats in need of a loving home, I'm certain you can find this kitty for me.

Nice to see Ovie wearing his Caps hat again and giving his new friends Caps hats! Looks like his is wearing his 8 again but it's hard to tell.

Pummeler is my favorite too. I can listen it non-stop for hours...

lol @ Steph.

I was thinking the guy on the left with the sunnies on looks like Scott Storch & Varly!

caps365 has the most adorable ad running before the videos start, it's Varly speaking in English! He smiles big and is a total cutie. This isn't a perfect link, you might get Boyd Gordon instead. I think you need to close the page and try again for Varly if you don't get him the first time.

Japers' posted this google translate link of an interview of Alexander Semin. It says he is the most eligible bachelor in his town, and gives his money to his parents to manage.

@O - Haha! Siberian tiger.

@AB- I saw the Varly intro yesterday. Definitely adorable.

I assume the pic in this article is at Ovi's parents house, since it has all the framed pics on the wall of his accomplishments.

@mkat,

I think the photos are taken at the hockey facility. There are other Russian NHLers on the wall not just Ovie.

It was in Novogorsk

HA! Obviously I wasn't looking very closely!

@mkat83: Yes I wasn't looking too closely at the walls either ;-)

ОВЕЧКИН
Припев
Goooal!!! Овечкин! Овечкин! С нами навечно! С нами навечно!
Овечкин! Эй, Овечкин! С нами навечно! С нами навечно!
Goooal!!!
On Fier!
Ови Ови On Fier!

Note the spelling of the word Fire:

Russian version: Fier

Anonymous said...

tj: thanks

O said...

@TJ,

Fire also used to be spelled fier in English too and was the dominant spelling for centuries. The remnant of that can be found in the word fiery.

For all the nerds out there, written English began to be standardized at the end of the 18th century. The spread of the free public school system in the U.S. at the beginning of the 19th century finished the process. A lot of credit should go to Benjamin Franklin and Noah Webster.

@O,

All I can say, "Wow! I didn't know that." Thanks!

From the post:
Ovechkin used the slang word "тащусь" ("Эминем. Я от него тащусь")

- the closest possible slang expression will be:
"Eminem! I dig that dude!"
