The stars of the Russian hockey and prominent politicians have played a charity game the proceeds of which will be transferred to the fund for children affected by the wildfires in Russia. The meeting between "Team Alexander Ovechkin" and "Ilya Kovalchuk Team" was held on Sunday in Sokolniki arena and ended in a draw, 13:13.

"Team Ovechkin" had in their roster goalie Vladimir Myshkin [that was a goalie who replaced Tretiak in a Miracle game vs. USA in 1980 -tj], Nikolai Zherdev, Michael Vishnevetski, Alexander Kharlamov [son of Valeri Kharlamov -tj], Interior Minister Rashid Nurgaliyev, Finance Minister Alexei Kudrin and other political figures.
"Team Kovalchuk" had Vyacheslav Fetisov, Dominik Hasek, Evgeni Malkin, Alexei Kasatonov, Assistant to the President for Economic Affairs Arkady Dvorkovich, Minister for Emergencies Sergei Shoigu.
The format of the game was three 15 minute periods. In the first period both Captains scored. On the 8th minute Ovechkin put his team ahead outplaying Dominik Hasek, and two minutes later Kovalchuk, assisted by Malkin, made it even. Mikhail Molchanov scored a second goal on assist from Kovalchuk at the end of the first period, and in the second period Fetisov increased the lead of Kovalchuk & Co. Ovechkin failed twice in shootout, losing in a duel to Ruslan Ekshembiev who replaced Hasek. On the 20th minute Maxim Petrov was able to beat Ekshembiev from close range. And 7 seconds before the siren Alexander Kharlamov has restored the status quo.
In the third period team Kovalchuk quickly scored two goals, but then allowed 6 goals. Rustam Minnikhanov, Andrei Vorobiev and Roman Rotenberg have scored twice, Nikolai Zherdev also scored 2 goals, who explained the change of momentum in the game as "We really didn't want to lose."
The game ended 9:7 in the regulation time in favor of team Ovechkin, but it was decided to play another period, which helped the team who was behind to correct the situation. The final score was 13:13. The decisive goal was created by Malkin and Kovalchuk.
Alexei Kudrin assured that the money collected through this game will reach the children for sure, "although the mechanics how to do it needs to be negotiated with the organizers". Dvorkovich said earlier that the organizers have collected about 10 million rubles.

Q.: Did anybody call you from the States during wildfires with concerns about you?
Ovechkin: No, nobody called.
Q.: Was the 4th period a surprise for you?
Ovechkin: What can you say, you saw who played for them. The President of KHL [Medvedev played for team Kovalchuk -tj] went to refs [and told them about additional period]. (laughs)

The charity games in different sports should become an annual event, said the forward of Washington Capitals and the Russian national team Alexander Ovechkin.
"We played this game for people who suffered from wildfires. It is a good will action, and we must arrange it not only when some disaster happens, but every year in every sport," said Ovechkin at the news conference. "This was the first big step and we need to continue that".
He cited the United States where such events are organized at the highest level. "There are many charity events over there that raise funds not only for the victims of disasters, but also for the sick and needy families. They arrange meetings, charity parties to collect a lot of money," said Ovechkin.
He said that he was in Moscow during the forest fires this summer.
"It happened in the midst of the training process, we had to stop training because we saw what's happening on the street," noted hockey player. [He actually joked that in the morning he would look in the window and go to sleep again -tj]
The organisers have announced that they collected collected 13,7 million rubles from the charity game.
"We didn't pay for organizing the charity event, but the sticks, jerseys, all this will go on sale. The funds will be transferred to the victims," said Ovechkin.
He said that there were no prohibitions on participation in such games from the National Hockey League (NHL) because "we help people who need it". "We didn't play physical, everybody had fun," said Ovechkin.
He admitted that for him a game of the President of Tatarstan Rustam Minnikhanov was a surprise, the President scored three goals and made three assists.
"You all saw it by yourself, he loves hockey, you can only applaud such people," added Dynamo's former forward.
