What Corvo learned about Ovechkin

newsobserver.com blogs, Oct. 27. 2010:

What did he learn about the Caps?
"Not much," Corvo said today. "It was just a short period of time that I was gone.
Their talent is pretty obvious. It's just a dangerous team."

Corvo said being around Alex Ovechkin gave him a better feel for the Caps star but didn't change any of his opinions about the hard-charging Russian.

"No, he was exactly what I thought. He just loves to play the game, has a huge competitive edge and is just a fun guy," Corvo said. "Exactly what I expected."

Fun guy? One doesn't often hear that said about Ovechkin, not in opposing locker rooms.

Washington Capitals' Nicklas Backstrom and Alex Ovechkin celebrate following Backstrom's goal against the Carolina Hurricanes during the third period of an NHL hockey game in Raleigh, N.C., Wednesday, Oct. 27, 2010. Washington won 3-0.

Pretty uneventful night for Ovi. He got 1 assist, +1, 4 shots on goal. The stats for the last 4 games: 1A, +2. One can declare that Ovi is officially in a slump. Hopefully it'll save him some energy for playoffs. :-)

I love how every time he does something douchey, there's a massive deluge of interviews and quotes from people that go on and on about how much of an awesome, nice, totally not douchey person he is.

PR/image management earning their salaries.

@M: This is nothing new though, the guys always says Ovi is a nice guy, whether he's being called a douche or not. But yes, it is funny how it's coming out at this time as well.

They need a couple of ladies to say the same thing though, not just guys ;-)

@M,
It's not true. Just like Ted said, a lot of good stuff about Ovi doesn't go into the news.

And if you think Corvo is there to say something nice because of GQ article, that's just laughable.

BTW, Caps have officially adopted GQ article, the commentators talked about it yesterday and the link is on Caps web site.

I haven't said it before, but I'll say it now; Michael Idov is a very talented writer.

What we've learned: Ovi is not an angel and absolute power corrupts, but he is still the best hockey player in the world.

I'm just waiting for Talbot to pipe back up and say "see, I told you he was a douchebag" ;-)

Of course the good stuff doesn't go into the news, people only want to salivate over the bad and the ugly. Hence I only believe about 50% of what is written. I'm still waiting for some smut about Nick though. That boy is way to clean.

@tj: I heard Joe B and Craig mention the article yesterday during the broadcast, and I thought I heard a hint of a giggle from them, in a good way. The two of them always makes me laugh.

On another note, Ovi did look much better on the ice yesterday. Hope this continues.

@M

When people who don't have a boat in the race mention how nice Ovie is, it isn't PR. It is just a person speaking about their personal experience.

"What is Ovechkin like?" Is a standard question lobbed at former teammates. This was the first time the Caps played the 'Canes since Corvo's return to the team; therefore, the question is predictable.

It is merely a coincidence that it came on the heels of the GQ article.

As for the game, much better all-around effort by the team. They actually looked like a TEAM.

Yes, they did look like a team, Neuvy was very good. I've always said he is as good if not better than Varlamov.

I kind of concerned that he looks too fragile and too baby-face junior. But Marc-Andre Fleury is of the same kind.

On the other hand, if Caps wouldn't score first, it could be totally different game. So a bit of luck, but we'll take it.

TJ,

I walked past Neuvy at Kettler not too long ago. (He was in shorts and a t-shirt.) He is much sturdier in person - bigger build than I thought.

He's losing the apple cheeks though. :(
