Russia vs Canada, Quebec

If you haven't seen it, this is the final in Quebec where Semin and Kovalchuk scored two goals each with Kovy's OT winner on a pass from Fedorov. Could be as well a preview of the finals in Vancouver.

I didn't realize Chimera was playing for Canada.

A game winner by Ovechkin

2:2, Ovi puts it in overdrive, he shoot, he scored the game winner! That's what you expect from the Great Eight Captain Ovechkin! Caps win 3:2 over the Bolts. It's Ovi's 35th goal of the season.

Ovi, Theo, Laich and Sloan on the win over Tampa

Washington Capitals' Alex Ovechkin reacts after scoring the go-ahead goal against the Tampa Bay Lightning during the third period of an NHL hockey game Sunday, Jan. 31, 2010, in Washington. The Capitals won 3-2.

OVECHKIN, ALEX:

1 goal, 1 assist, +1, total ice time 20:35, average shift 00:58 (perfect!), 02:41 PP, 17:54 even, 6 shots on goal, 11 attempts blocked, 2 missed, 1 hit, 1 giveaway

The Fact:
Since the Capitals named Alexander Ovechkin captain on Jan. 5, they have gone 13-1-0 and have scored four or more goals in every game but two. Their ten-game winning streak is the club’s longest in 21 seasons and matches the franchise record.

Ovechkin has 496 career points, 4 short of 500.

Tocchet: Ovechkin was ready, I have to give him credit

By Damian Cristodero, TampaBay.com, Jan. 31, 2010:Coach Rick Tocchet was very right when he said the Lightning cannot afford to come out for today's game with the Capitals without the same passion they showed in their victory over the Capitals on Jan. 12. That game was physical, with the most notable confrontation coming between Tampa Bay pest Steve Downie and Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin. There almost was a fight between the two until Washington's Matt Bradley stepped in. Not that Ovechkin wasn't willing. Bradley was just protecting his team's most important player.

"We're going to need a lot of passion and a lot of smart hockey players," Tocchet said. "Passion but smart. If you're out there running around being an idiot, being stupid, that's not passion to me. If you're ready off the draw and got to the net hard and playing the coach's system, you're taking short shifts, you're getting after some of their best players and getting in their faces. we got it from Steve Downie and (Zenon) Konopka the last time we played them."

Tocchet also took another opportunity to praise Ovechkin for his aggressive, some might say reckless, style of play, and brought that back around to talking about what his team needs to beat Washington, which has won nine straight, and eight straight at home and is 11-2-0 in the Southeast.

"He was ready," he said of the almost fight with Downie. "I have to give him credit. 'I'm ready to go,' and his team followed. We need to bring that, with that same vengeance from some guys. I know Downs and Konopka will be there, but we need other guys to bring that passion. I don't think it's hatred, but to get us to the next level and compete, we have to have that passion."

Other stuff from around the team: As noted in today's paper, Mike Smith is back in net after missing six games with a strained neck and two games as Antero Niittymaki's backup. ... Niittymaki will play Wednesday against the Thrashers, against whom he is 15-0-0. ... Scratches will be announced before the game. ... Tampa Bay entered the game one point out of the eighth playoff spot in the East but with three games in hand.

Wayne Gretzky's Belorussian roots

Wayne is in Belarus along with Mark Messier for the KHL All Star.

Here's KP.ru (Komsomolskaya Pravda) interview with Wayne Grezky:

The famous Canadian hockey player arrived to Minsk for the All Stars KHL game, Gretzky was invited as an honored guest. In Belarus the legendary Canadian is considered as their man, because his grandfather Terenty lived in the village of Brest region, and went off to Canada to work in 20-ties, leaving his wife and children here. There, over the ocean, he married for a second time and in 1961 he became the grandfather of Wayne.

Svislach (Belarusian: Свiслач, pronounced [ˈɕvislatʃ] ( listen); Russian: Свислочь, Svisloch, Lithuanian: Svisločius, Polish: Świsłocz) is a town in the South-West of Hrodna voblast, Belarus, an administrative center of the Svislach district.

Notable residents include:
Rabbi Aharon Kotler
Rabbi Samuel Belkin
David Lewis (Losz), Canadian Rhodes Scholar and federal New Democratic Party leader.

And in the Belarusian city Svisloch lives Galina Soldatenkova, she is also the granddaughter of Terenty Gretzky. But she is the daughter of Terenty's son from his first marriage. They never met, but the photographs show the overall breed.

On the eve of Gretzky's arrival to Minsk we asked Galina if Wayne had called her.

"No, he didn't," said Galina, "maybe he doesn't even know about us. But if he'll come, I'll give him our home sausage and will bake him a cake."

When Wayne arrived to Minsk, we met with him in the lobby of the hotel "Europe" and the first thing we asked was, "Wayne, do you know about your distant relatives who live in Belarus? Here's your sister, with whom you are bound by a common grandfather," we showed the photo of Galina.

"Really? You're not joking, are you?" It was clear that Wayne knows about his distant Belarusian roots, but without much detail. "Is she is still alive?" asked Wayne.

"Yes, and she is about the same age as you," we opened a newspaper and showed an old photo of Galina with her father Zinovy, who is Gretzky's uncle.

"I know that my father's brother was living here," Wayne perked up, looking at the photos. He turned the page and looked at Saratov's blonde, who was in the contest for Miss KP. "And is she my cousin too?"

"No!"

"What a pity!" said Wayne.

Galina still hopes that Gretzky will call her.

And what will you ask him?

Galina: "I would like to learn how my grandfather lived in Canada. Maybe he'll show his pictures."

By Risto Pakarinen, THN, Jan. 30, 2010:
MINSK – The KHL staged its second annual All-Star Game in Minsk, Belarus on Saturday. A red-dressed team consisting of Russian players took on the rest of the world, dressed in white, in a brand new Minsk Arena, also the host of the 2014 World Championship.

While both rosters boasted with several former NHLers, the highest concentration of hockey knowledge and experience was seen at the ceremonial opening faceoff, when Wayne Gretzky and Mark Messier stepped on the ice - supported by Sergei Fedorov - together with the KHL president Alexander Medvedev and Vyacheslav Fetisov.

Gretzky, a guest of the Belarusian hockey federation, has family roots that go back to Belarus - his silhouette is also on the logo of the 2014 World Championship. He held a short press conference earlier on Saturday.

“Today is an opportunity for me to see these players play, but the level of play in both leagues is always improving,” Gretzky said. “The influence of the Russian players like Pavel Datsyuk, Alexander Ovechkin, and Evgeni Malkin, has helped make the NHL that much better.

“The KHL is the same way, when the best players play here it makes it a better league. The Olympics is a great way to compare countries. For Canada, it will be a tough test to play the Russian team.”

When asked about the NHL-KHL relations, Gretzky replied:

“I’m not here for the NHL, I don’t work for them, but I think we all have the same common goal to make the game of hockey bigger and better worldwide. I think the NHL knows and understands that. I hope that when they (the KHL, the IIHF and the NHL) meet in Vancouver (during the Olympics), they can all come to an understanding that will make both leagues happy.”

IIHF president René Fasel: Ovechkin is my favorite hockey player

IIHF president René Fasel gave an interview to Mikhail Zislis of Sport-Express.ru (Jan. 29, 2010):

The main concern for entire hockey Russia: what's the case with the Olympic roster? Different parties have different interpretations on how to make substitutions to it.
I can immediately put you at ease. We have already discussed this issue, and not only with Tretiak. Yesterday I received a call from Russia's national team coach Slava Bykov, and we have put all dots on the i's.

In fact, compared to the last Olympics, nothing fundamentally has changed. We have an agreement with the NHL and the players union of that league. Under this agreement the national team's roster is announced a month and a half or two months before the tournament. It was a requirement of the union: their players must know in advance if they go to the Olympics or not. The NHL will interrupt the regular championship for two weeks, the best players go to the tournament, and the rest will go on vacation. You have to agree that the interests of the rest must not be forgotten. That's why the league insisted that there shouldn't be any unexpected substitutions in the "list of 23".

In other words, any national team can replace a hockey player who is not representing the NHL club. But for NHL players it is another matter. If the same Bykov wants to replace the NHL player, he can only do so for two reasons: because of the injury to a player or because of any special circumstances that prevents the player to be in Vancouver.

How can you define the special circumstances?
There's no official defintion, but in order to apply it to any player, all parties, the NHL, the NHLPA, the IIHF and the national team must adhere to a common position in respect to the hockey player. It may interfere with his play at the Olympics, for example, for personal reasons. But if a player has a headache or all of a sudden his coach dislikes him, that's no reason for replacement.

Did anything changed regarding of NHL participation at the Games in Sochi?
The ball is on the NHL's side. For hockey as a game, for television, for reporters and millions of fans it is very important that only the best players will participate in such a tournament. And if in the end the NHL says that they will not release their players to the tournament, do we have to cancel the Olympics? Of course, this will be a catastrophe in some sense. But many NHL stars want to come to Sochi. Ovechkin openly said about it. The players position can be important when discussing the new collective agreement in 2011. I hope that the level of the tournament in Vancouver will be such that all parties would have to continue to compete on the ice of Sochi.

It seems like Ovechkin is your favorite player?
I am following him ever since he was 16 - 17 years old. I remember how the former President of IIHF Alexander Steblin talked about him. Ovechkin embodies all that is the best in hockey. There are other stars, but he is my favorite. His game is the best advertisement for Russia's hockey in North America.

Jalopnik again:

When we posted a picture of the license plate on Alexander Ovechkin's Mercedes Sedan it didn't take long for everyone to remind us of the boastful vanity plate on his other super Mercedes.

While it doesn't have the same emotional impact as "AAA8AAA" we think "A0 GR8" has a certain Sloth-from-The-Goonies poetry to it. Plus, anything attached to an SL65 AMG Black Series makes a statement. (Hat tip to everyone who shared this!)

...Two men who were kids growing up together in Moscow not so long ago, having sleepovers and breaking furniture playing floor hockey in the house.

And so when Kashirsky got called up from the ECHL to the Moose last week, one of the first to congratulate him was Ovechkin, widely regarded as the premier hockey player in the game right now.

"He was telling me to just stick with it and work hard and everything's going to be fine," Kashirsky, 25, recalled Thursday. "He was proud of me that I got called up and I was playing with Sergei."

'Sergei' is Moose rookie Russian sniper Sergei Shirokov, who Ovechkin also knows -- and apparently still remembers for the roll of baby fat Shirokov still carries around his waist.
"He said, 'Tell Sergei I say hi. And lose some weight.' He's a really funny guy. And a very down-to-earth person."

Asked what it was like to go out on the town with Ovechkin, Kashirsky slammed the door closed again. "That's confidential," he said with a grin. "It's a lot of fun."

While everything has changed for Ovechkin, Kashirsky says his relationship with the man remains the same.

"When we're together, we're just like two little kids back home joking about stupid stuff. Kind of childish and stuff... he's just the same Alex to me as when we grew up."

Ovechkin as poweful as his cars

Nate Ewell: Ovi in car blogs now. For the record, his plate on the black car is better.

It's no secret mad Russian hockey player Alexander Ovechkin has a taste for speed and insane cars like the Mercedes SL65 AMG Black Series and this Brabus-tuned S-Class. His taste in vanity plates? Not quite so creative.

DC Sports Bog: Ovechkin ranked 37th most powerful athlete

Bloomberg BusinessWeek just published a list of the 100 most powerful athletes in America, with on-field measures (success, popularity) and off-field measures (awareness, trustworthiness, appeal, endorsement and influence).

It's not a list filled with D.C. names--I could find just two one--but Alex Ovechkin fared pretty well, coming in at 37th, all sports, all nationalities, all genders. He comes in one spot after Dwight Howard, one spot in front of Andre Johnson, and is the highest ranked hockey player. The list includes athletes from all countries, but they're ranked on their American power.

"The two-time league MVP's YouTube highlights helped him surpass Sidney Crosby as the player most likely to return hockey to the mainstream," the publication wrote. "Now he just needs to work on his English."

(Sidney Crosby is 39th, with Business Week writing that "Though Alex Ovechkin gets the SportsCenter shoutouts, Crosby is the proven winner with two Stanley Cup final appearances to his name.")

Bloomberg BusinessWeek:

Alexander Ovechkin
Power 100 rank: 37
Sport: NBA/Washington Capitals—F
Age: 24
Most recent notable achievement: 2009 NHL MVP
Earnings: $12 million
Key sponsors: CCM

Why he's on the list: The two-time league MVP's YouTube highlights helped him surpass Sidney Crosby as the player most likely to return hockey to the mainstream. Now he just needs to work on his English.

AP "Capitals blow past Ducks for eighth straight victory":Shaone Morrisonn, Mike Knuble and Alexander Semin scored on consecutive shots to break open a tie game, helping the Capitals win their eighth straight -- their best run since an eight-game streak in 1988-89.

Alex Ovechkin scored his 34th goal in the first period and had two assists in the third, while Semin added another goal -- his 25th of the season -- on a 5-on-3 power play in the third. Semin has six goals and eight assists in seven games.

Since Ovechkin became captain on Jan. 5, Washington has won 11 of 12 games and scored at least four goals in all but one of them. The Capitals are averaging 3.83 goals per game -- more than a half-goal better than any other team -- and are on pace to become the league's highest scoring team since the Pittsburgh Penguins in 1995-96.

Ovechkin hopes for the best year for his team

UNIONDALE, NY - JANUARY 26: Alex Ovechkin warms up before playing the New York Islanders on January 26, 2010 at Nassau Coliseum in Uniondale, New York. (Photo by Jim McIsaac/Getty Images)

I think Ovechkin's 10 shots on goal are the highest for him this season. yet he didn't even get a point in this game. But the Caps win again, 7th in a row and that's all that matters!

Update from Tarik: "We got seven goals and [Alex Ovechkin] and [Mike Green] didn't get a point," Coach Bruce Boudreau said. "It says you've good balance in your team." Weird to see the Caps get seven goals and Ovechkin finish with 10 shots but no points. I though No. 8 was flying tonight, beginning with that shot he took while sliding on his knees a minute into the game. He also had a nice break-in later, but was stopped.

Ovechkin's stats:
Total ice time 20:51, average shift 01:13, 10(!) shots on goal, 4 attempts blocked (hope Jack Hillen will get well soon)

By Adam Gretz, NHL fan house, Jan 26, 2010:
It's not a surprise to see Alex Ovechkin's name at the top of the NHL's scoring list (entering play on Tuesday, he trails Henrik Sedin by six points for the league lead) given that he's finished in the top three in three of his first four seasons in the NHL. It could be a surprise, however, to see him up there this season, when he's played in 10 fewer games than the other top scorers in the league.

Can a player who has already won two MVP awards and a scoring title still have a breakout season? Well, no, not really, but if it were possible, it would be what Ovechkin is doing right now. Earlier in the year there was a legitimate discussion as to whether or not he could score 50 goals in 50 games, as well as the possibility of him hitting the 70-goal plateau. Thanks to an injury and a two-game suspension, neither of those milestones will be hit this year, but that doesn't mean he still isn't having (statistically) the best season of his career, and by a pretty wide margin.

"The thing about Alex is, he perseveres," said Capitals coach Bruce Boudreau. "In every game, the best defensive players are playing against him. Every team talks before the game about how they're going to try to stop him. Yet he still does what he does. There are a lot of great players in the league, but I don't think anyone is the complete package like Alex."

Currently, Ovechkin is lapping the field with an 1.63 points-per-game average, a number that nobody else in the league is even remotely close to at this point. He's been at the top of the league in points-per-game the past two seasons, but the gap between him and the rest of the league has always been minimal (last year he led Evgeni Malkin by .01 points, and led Sidney Crosby by the same margin the year before). Here's how the gap looks as of right now:

Alex Ovechkin: 1.63
Henrik Sedin: 1.46
Daniel Sedin: 1.41
Joe Thornton: 1.26
Sidney Crosby: 1.26

His averages in previous years have been 1.31, 1.12, 1.37, and 1.39.

If Ovechkin can maintain this pace for the rest of the season, it would be the best per-game average the NHL has seen since Mario Lemieux averaged 1.76 points during the 2000-01 season. Before that, you have to go all the way back to 1995 to find a point-per-game average on the same level as what we're seeing from Ovechkin this season. The scary thing is he's still a couple of years away from when most players hit their estimated point-per-game peak.

"I hope when this season is over it is not looked at as my best personal year, but as the best year for our team," said Ovechkin before the Capitals' game against the Islanders. "We want to win the Stanley Cup."

Semin: I grabbed someone's stick and ran

Another awesome interview with Semin by Pavel Lysenkov of Sovetsky Sport. Unfortunately I don't have time to translate the whole article. Here are some excerpts:

I talked with Bobby Clarke, the Philadelphia Flyers legend, and he said, " Ovechkin is bull on ice! He crushes everyone under himself, goes through the players. Do you agree with Clark?
They are trying to kill him, but nothing matters for Ovechkin anyway. No one can handle him and it's hard to beat him one on one. He is huge and rolls like a train. But look by yourself (Semin nods toward the door where as, if it was ordered, appears Ovechkin along with his father, Mikhail Viktorovich.)

And what kind of animal could you be compared?
Wow, what a question! (Semin is surprised) I won't answer myself.

Uncle Misha, who would you compare me with?
Dad Ovechkin thinks and issues, "Pantera! There is something feline is Sashka's game. This is how he scored a goal against Philadelphia, crept in and scored."

Alexander, in general you give the impression of imperturbable man.
But why to pay an attention when they are trying to provoke you? It is clear why they are doing it, to make a player mad and earn a power play. For me all this is a baby talk.

When was Alexander Semin mad the last time? Not necessarily in the game, maybe in a real life?
Even when I had a fight with Rangers' Marc Staal, I was not overwhelmed by emotions... No, I am not like that. I never get mad.

Tuvanhillbilly [Japer's Rink] had translated more...

This piece below was funny...

What kind of news from the KHL are the most catchy for you? Except about Lada [former Semin's team]. Maybe melee in Chekhov?
This is a joke. Who needs it? Well, I watched the video, nothing good. Should've been just like in the NHL, one tough guy against another. Why the whole teams were fighting?

Do you remember anything like that?
Yes, I saw something like that once. It was in Krasnoyarsk. There was a game between the boys born in 1980. I was four years younger and watched the game from the stands. And then it was a melee! A bench clearing brawl, really. I only remember my friend and grabbed someone's sticks off the ice and ran. The sticks were in a short supply back then.

I can not imagine this battle in the NHL. If someone pops up from the bench, when others fight, he will receive automatic disqualification for 10 games. Then it will be reviewed and it could be even more.

You've recently extended the contract with Washington for another year. After 2010/11 you'll be unrestricted free agent. Is there an option that you could return to the KHL? Maybe one percent chance?
I won't tell you. Why disturb people? I will play for Capitals another year and a half. I am happy with everything in Washington. And as more things will come, no one knows what will happen...

Sad

This is where Russian hockey is heading recently, a lot of fights and bench clearing melees. In Communist Russia it was considered bad (I won't blame them too much) and the fights were prohibited. At he same time Russians exercised a liberty of intimidating other Europeans, like Czechs, Swedes, and Finns. It was going on and on until 1972 series vs. Canada. In those series the Russians were Czechs, Swedes and Finns, and Canadians were the Russians.

Now 9 year olds get into the fights. It is sad to watch. On the other hand Canadians should be beware, a new breed of hockey dogs is growing, a mix between Canadian huskies and finesse Russian hounds.

Russians are coming! :-)

Alex Semin had a goal and three assists, Eric Fehr and Alex Ovechkin each had a goal and an assist. This was sixth in a row Caps's victory.

Pre-game skate, excitement in the air

Ovi couldn't score against Bryzgalov, but was otherwise very visible and his team has won. That's all that counts. Besides an empty netter and an assist won't hurt in a scoring race.

Ovechkin is now second in points behind Henrik Sedin, second in goals behind Patrick Marleau, first in plus-minus with +5 ahead of Burrows.

Ovechkin's stats:

1 goal (empty net), 1 assist, +1, total ice time 22:56, average shift 01:16, 10:28 on power play, 12:28 even, 6 shots on goal, 5 attempts blocked, 1 missed, 4 hits, 1 shot blocked.
