Friday the 31st

Ovi and his bro Misha. Same genes, different goals in life. He could've been a hockey player, and a good one, but he chose another path. Like from that movie, "Backbeat" about Stuart Sutcliffe: "He could've been with the Beatles... but he chose to be an artist."

Go, Misha! All the best to you.

Misha, Ovi, Mago and Goose

A ton of pics from http://ovechkin.tumblr.com/ and http://washingtoncapitals.tumblr.com/ (H/t to BobbyG)

Our scouting report(wink to BobbyG): according to Ian Oland at RMNB, the dark haired girl in some of the photos riding Ovie's back is Alex Semin's niece, his sister's daughter. And the guy getting the wedgie from Ovie is GM George McPhee's son Graham.

Espn:

"Well, the atmosphere is great," Ovechkin said. "And it's too bad it was not open practice for fans. But it's good. We have family and friends with us. And we just chill over there before the big game, so it's good."

Ovechkin will be busting out these special edition CCM U+ Crazy Light skates for the Winter Classic. Ovi's camp has worked with CCM since the summer on the skates, which feature Caps red, the Ovi8 logo in yellow and the names of Ovechkin's brother and grandfather. The skates will be available at retail in a few months, without the references to Ovi's family members.

Ovechkin after Thursday practice and shooting matryoshki on ESPN

12/30/10 washcaps: Ovi, Knuble, Boudreau, Hannan, Fehr, Perreault and more speak about heading off to Pittsburgh

This must be an old video, but I haven't seen it. Some delay from ESPN, I guess, they just posted it. If he'll shoot the puck like that on Jan.1 the victory will be ours.

By Seth Livingstone, USA Today, Dec. 30, 2010 "Alex Ovechkin eyes explosion, tries to rebound from slump":

Ovechkin is taking heed.

"Shoot the puck, crash the net and find the rebound," he says. "It's on our shoulders. The power play was our key last year. Teams were afraid to take a penalty against us. Right now, we don't have a power play. We've played terribly — created some cute plays that don't work. It starts with me."

Perhaps getting back to his roots by playing outdoors at Heinz Field will be the ticket.

"I did (play outdoors) when I was a little kid, so it's not new for me," he says. "But the kind of experience we're going to have in a couple days — that's going to be pretty sick. (Playing in front of 70,000) is going to be a new experience. Everybody is excited."

And if it continues to get Ovechkin back on track, all that much better.

"Anytime anything goes wrong, Alex is the guy we look to," Capitals defenseman Mike Green says. "We need the leadership that he promotes within our dressing room. He really does care. All of us have to step up, but Alex is the one who kind of has the limelight on him."

Boudreau anticipates things will turn around.

"Eventually, something good is going to come from this," he says. "Alex is too good of an athlete, too good of a player, too good of a person for this to continue."

Check Ovi's mustache and marks under his eyes. Someone had a lot of fun.

Capitals Insider:

Even though it was 46 degrees outside and very sunny on the Chevy Chase rink, unlike what the forecasts are calling for in Pittsburgh on New Year's day, the Capitals enjoyed the opportunity to run through a regular hour long practice outside.

Ovi breathed a sign of relief, scoreless streak is over.

Ovi's stats:

Seems like he has almost everything in his stats, blocked shot, faceoff won, penalty and perfect average shift under 1 minute.

That's much better, Coach!

Warning: Adult language.

If you don't have HBO, the second episode of HBO 24/7 in on YouTube now (link to the first episode):

I called Coach Boudreau (not :-), complained about his language, and Bruce responded!

This is much better, Coach!

The second episode starts with... "In Washignton DC, meanwhile, the Capitals continue their downward spiral leaving Coach Boudreau irate":

Lookit, I have never seen a bunch of guys look so fucking down when something bad happens. What are you guys, like prima donna perfect, if you can't fucking handle adversity?

So shit's not going right! It's not fucking working the last ten days! Fucking get your heads out of your ass and fucking make it work by outworking the opposition!

Bruce Boudreau about the most wonderful part of the year :
"This is a really important period for this year. You gotta say it's fucking over. If you don't say it's over, then something bad could really fucking happen. I don't think we want the bad things to happen. Too many of us are enjoying it here, fucking like it here. So let's get out of our fucking funk and do it now."

Bruce Boudreau:
This is a rough time, it's rough time for everybody, but it's gonna make you better in a long run. Chicago lost nine in a row last year. Just want you to remember this, they lost nine in a row and won the Cup.

Bruce Boudreau:
We are learning through our mistakes. We are learning what is gonna take to be a great team. And it comes with a lot of shit.

Bruce Boudreau:
We've been knocking on the door hard. Nobody's answering the door. So it's up to us to break the fucking door down and do it for ourselves.

Mike Knuble's speech is now an instant classic:
"Today it's three-zero, and it will not fucking be one of these laughers again. It will not fucking turn into a five-zero, seven-zero fucking laugher, where they're fucking giggling, getting out of their fucking mess here. We are fucking down three-zero, and we are going to come back and we're gonna fucking win this thing. We're not fucking going in the tank here. That is enough right here. That's fucking more than a year's worth. It's not gonna happen again."

And finally here goes team's unoffical victory anthem "Beat Dat Beat":

Where all my ladies at, make some noise!
Where my fellas at, I can't forget my dawgs make some noise!
When I'm in your city and your rockin' with DJ Pauly D
And that beat hits you, you gotta fight back
So what I need you to do is get down real low and tap that ground
Keep hitting it! (x2)
Now work your way up and fight that beat.
Fight that beat!
Now pump your fists!

Go,Caps! We are taking over the World! :-) And we gonna beat dat shit out of some team on 1/1/11!

First game vs. Pens in this season

Hockey Gods please be with us!

After the 1st:

I really like how the team is playing tonight. Definitely playoff type of hockey.

Can't believe how fugly Cindy was left unattended next to the net. How could you not pay attention to him? Washington on ice when Cindy scored: Fehr, Knuble, Green, Carlson, Perreault.

Pens definitely singling out Green and hunting him. So far Pens coaching is better.

Seek and destroy. Malkin got what he deserved for wearing Penguins uniform. Go Caps!

Today (12/24) there are 16 videos on YouTube 'Alex Ovechkin destroys Evgeny Malkin'

After the 2nd:
Didn't like how Ovi played PP in the first period. When he could shoot, he'd pass, and when he tried to shoot, the defenseman was too close to him. What he whole NHL has understood now is how to play vs. Ovi. At the exact moment he shoots (slapshot or wrist, doesn't matter), put a stick there to block his stick, not a puck, but the stick. So what Ovi could do before passing? At least, at least pretend that you are shooting.

But Ovi did great during the power play when Caps made it even and Green scored on PP. Ovi abandoned the point, went to the net and stayed there. This move totaly screwed Pens special team. All of a sudden Ovi was gone from the point, so where are their pre-game instructions? What to do, who to block, Ovi's not there! And Greenie did it. Thank you, Sir!

Shootout aftermath:

Ovi scores, but it was not enough...

A nice effort by Caps, let me say, awesome effort. We are talking about the team that just had 8 games losing streak.

Go, Caps!

Ovechkin's stats:

After the 1st:
Total ice time 08:20, 7 shifts, average 01:11, PP 03:42, even 04:38, 4 shots on goal, 4 attempts blocked, 1 missed, 3 hits, 1 takeaway, 2 faceoffs lost.

After the 2nd:
2 penalty minutes, total ice time 16:23, 14 shifts, average 01:10, PP 07:34, even 08:49, 4 shots on goal, 5 attempts blocked, 3 missed, 4 hits, 1 giveaway, 1 takeaway, 2 faceoffs lost.

After the 3rd:
2 penalty minutes, total ice time 23:13, 22 shifts, average 01:03, PP 07:34, even 15:39, 5 shots on goal, 5 attempts blocked, 3 missed, 5 hits, 1 giveaway, 1 takeaway, 2 faceoffs lost.

Alex Ovechkin Gets A Rough Fisting, Sits Incredibly Close To The TV
Ovechkin is certainly not camera shy (well, at least most of the time he isn’t), and his extra airtime during last night’s episode allowed hockey fans to get a closer look into the life of the Russian phenom. Things started with a rubdown from a team trainer, which became somewhat awkward when Ovi began moaning and grunting as he received some work on an area that almost turned this from an R-rated show to an X-rated one.
His hamstring massage was followed up by a trip home, where we not only learned that this $124-million man still lives with his parents, but he also sits incredibly close to the television while playing video games.

Coach Bruce Boudreau entered the locker room

By Paul Tenorio, Capitals Insider, Dec. 20-, 2010:

After his team fell behind by two goals in the first period Sunday in Ottawa, Coach Bruce Boudreau entered the locker room and told the effing Capitals that the upcoming effing period was effing likely the effing most effing important they would effing face all effing season.

Before HBO 24/7 first episode there were warnings about adult language, not for kids, etc. I was salivating though, hoping that would be a new and better version of Slapshot, especially since Bruce Boudreau was featured there (Washington Capitals head coach Bruce Boudreau appears as an opposing player in one scene.). Well, at least his apartment, for the most part. It turned out Bruce's profanity was as primitive as Caps offense have been recently. Just insert 'effing' after every word and you got it.

Compare it with Slapshot:"
They come here tonight... to scout the Chiefs! The toughest team in the Federal League! Not this bunch of... pussies!

Or something close to Reggie's speech:
It's their rink, it's their ice and it's their fuckin' town.

But tonight we got our fans with us! - Yeah!

They spent their own dough to get here, and they came here to see us.

Let's show 'em what we got. Get out on the ice and let 'em know you're there.

Get that stick in their side, let 'em know you're there.

Get that lumber in his teeth, let him know you're there!

Bleed all over 'em. Let 'em know you're there.

Give 'em a good warm-up, Danny. Let's go.

Come on, fellas.

I am really disappointed and I am going to call Bruce and complain... :-)

Ovechkin, Boudreau at crossroads

Eric Duhatschek, Globe and Mail, Dec. 17,2010:

Ovechkin’s primary failing in last year’s playoff was going all lone-wolf on his team when they fell behind against the Montreal Canadiens and couldn’t solve the goaltending of Jaroslav Halak. This year, it looks as if Ovechkin has made a concentrated effort to be more of a team player on the ice.

Greg Fiume/Getty Images

For a short time, when he and fellow Russian Alexander Semin were playing together on a line, it was Ovechkin’s playmaking that sent Semin off on a goal-scoring spree. It looks as if Ovechkin is caught in between right now, thinking too much about his own role on the team and what actually goes into being the captain of an NHL team.

He still leads the NHL in shots, with 146 in 33 games, but is just five up on Jeff Carter (Philadelphia) and eight ahead of Patrick Sharp (Chicago), for an average of about 4.4 per game. Usually, he is miles ahead in this category. Last year, his average was 5.1 shots per game (and only New Jersey’s Zach Parise was even in the ballpark).

So Ovechkin has a lot to sort out in the next four months. Is he a scorer? Is he a set-up man? How does he tangibly demonstrate leadership when his English language skills are improving but still sounds better as a sound bite than anything else? Realistically, if Ovechkin sees this early adversity as a challenge and rises to it, it might be the best thing that ever happened to the Capitals down the road, when it matters most.

In the meantime, it is hard to imagine anyone doing a better job behind the bench than the charismatic Boudreau, handling a team of so many diverse personalities. This is one time where a coaching change could easily have the opposite of the desired effect - and actually send the Capitals retreating further down the standings.

It's hard to believe, but Alex Ovechkin still can't recover from that Vancouver Olympics disaster. It was his Chernobyl and there is still a lot of radioactive stuff that burns inside. All bravado, all his "I don't care what people think about me" is just a cover. Alex is very emotional guy and things like his Grandpa's illness or loss to team Canada deeply affect him and his performance.

For Bruce Boudreau the time is as hard as ever. He never played defensive hockey, he never coached a team that used trap. Can he do it? The first example that comes to mind is Scotty Bowman.
In 1993–94, Bowman then became coach of the Red Wings, and led them to a first-place finish in the Western Conference, but his Red Wings were ousted in the first round by the young San Jose Sharks. An apocryphal story reported about Bowman's "Spinal Tap"-like troubles in the tunnels of the San Jose Arena where he got lost in the tangled maze, and twice locked himself into rooms and had to be rescued.

In 1995, the Red Wings made it to the Stanley Cup Finals but were swept by the New Jersey Devils in four straight. This was the Red Wings' first appearance in the finals in 29 years.

After losing to trap team like New Jersey Devils is, Scotty Bowman had to adjust. And the help came from one of his assistant coaches. Barry Smith installed the defensive system called "left wing lock".

Unfortunately Capitals don't have an assistant coach who can help in that category. It's do or die for Bruce Boudreau now.

By Katie Carrera, Washington Post, Dec. 18, 2010:
"Only fools or stubborn fools, when something's not working, don't change for the sake of not changing," said Boudreau, who was pleased with the early returns as the Capitals played one of their best defensive games of the season Wednesday against the Anaheim Ducks. The contest concluded as a 2-1 overtime loss, but Washington showed a dedicated effort to get back to the defensive end on every shift, minimized turnovers and yielded just a handful of scoring chances.

"I think this is the type of game we need to play to be successful in the playoffs," defenseman Mike Green said. "The only reason why I say that is because now having played in the playoffs for three years, this is what teams have done to us and this is how they've shut us down. . . . It was an area in our game that we needed to work on and we needed to adjust, and we're consciously making the decision to adjust."

Playing with a dedicated shut-down line and having all five skaters work deep in their own zone is a different style than the one the Capitals have grown accustomed to under Boudreau. Rather than pinching up as much and looking to join the rush constantly, Washington's blue-liners are asked to not come up as high in the neutral zone and play a more traditional defensive role, defenseman Karl Alzner said. The forwards are tasked with making sure they backcheck effectively and don't sacrifice stability on the back end.

Boudreau said he's not sure if the defensive style will be as prominent when the Capitals start filling opposing nets once again. He does want the team to continue working on it to the point where they're comfortable and confident playing a shut-down method, though, so that the option will be ready in Washington's toolbox.

"That's the way you have to play in the playoffs," Boudreau said. "If we learn how to do it now, hopefully by playoff time we'll have it down pat."

Exactly right, to be successful the team must know how to play defensively, some kind or variation of trap, but run and gun style is what attracts the fans in the regular season.

The recipe not to forget it is simple, play different styles depending where you are, on the road or at home.

"Mad" Mike Milburry, speaking words of wisdom (Dec. 17, 2010, cbc.ca):
These are difficult times for Washington and there is nowhere to look but in the mirror. Gone are the days of shake 'em up trades. There is always the coach to blame, but he is not alone in bearing responsibility. It's time for the players to circle the wagons and lean on each other. They have to be focused entirely on their profession. There has to be a clear mandate from the coach that defence is not an option, shot blocking is a must, and turnovers in critical areas are unacceptable.

Maybe this will be good for them. Maybe they will realize that they cannot win a Cup unless they find the desire to play defence-first hockey. Or maybe this winds up costing people their jobs. One way or the other, something or someone has to pop with the Caps.

And this is why I love the game. You just never know. Count me as humbled once again.

America loves a comeback

Great post from Ted Leonsis about HBO 24/7:

I am reminded of the late great Brandon Tartikoff, former President of NBC and a close friend of mine, when he said, “Ted - remember that television drama only focuses on three acts. Act 1 - Young kid comes out of nowhere, shocks the experts and wins. A happy story. Act 2 - Young kid as winner has a very public and humiliating fall. Humility and lessons learned. Act 3 - Redemption and comeback. America loves a comeback.”
In other news Pens lost to Rangers (round of applause to Rangers!). See, both teams are in HBO reality show, what's the difference?

The difference is that Pans are going down and Caps, being there already, are going up.

Go, Caps!

Carlson: I think we 're gonna be ready to go tomorrow night

If you missed Great Eight DVD on the NHL Network today, they will re-air the documentary Dec. 22 at 6 p.m., Dec. 25 at 7 p.m. and Dec. 27 at 7 p.m. (H/t to our reader "O".)

Ovi, Carlson, Knuble, Chimera, Bradley and Boudreau

Just about time to bounce back and be ready for Pens on New Year's eve.

I couldn't believe myself, but I was rooting for Flyers tonight and they ended Pens 12 game win streak. Now the pendulum is swinging back (Damien Cox jinxed it :-).

Bruce Boudreau on ESPN's SportNation:

Were you as surprised as I was to see Ovie fighting the other night?

Yes. I was surprised but when he saw the guy coming at him, he thought there was no recourse. He saw him coming at him and he decided to be the aggressor and not let someone jump him.

As a fan it seems like Ovechkin can get pretty excited on the ice. As a coach, do you ever have to talk with him to try and calm him down?

No. My thought on that is the more he's excited, it reminds me of The Hulk. The madder he gets the stronger he gets. The more excited Alex gets the better he gets. It's when he's sullen you worry about him.

"Well, he was just seventeen, and you know what I mean, and the way he looked, was WAY beyond compare." :-)

It's strange to see Ovi smile and not having a missing tooth... What a beautiful smile he had... Now you have to wait another 10 years to see that :-)

First fight for Ovechkin in ugly loss to Rangers

First fight with Dubinsky and later getting under friendly fire. Semin's wrist shot hit Ovi in the right leg. Ovi collapsed and barely got off the ice after that.

Ovi had one fight vs. Flyers Mike Richards, but it was an exhibition game. NHL stats show that it's his second fighting major, I guess the first was after Paul Gaustad went after Ovi in a game vs Sabres? But back then Ovi didn't make any attempt to throw any punches.

So this is really a first fight for Ovi and he did well because Brandon Dubinski has more experience in fighting.

What Ovechkin has gained and what he has lost

We had noted in the past how Alex Ovechkin's weight had changed during his 5 seasons in the NHL:

Here is Alex' weight over the years:

2003/04: 200 lbs
2005/06: 212 lbs
2008/09: 220 lbs
2009/10: 233 lbs
2010/11: 234 lbs

As you can see the biggest change was between 2008/09 and 2009/10 seasons. So we've got DJ King is at 233, Mike Knuble at 227, John Erskine at 224, Jeff Schultz at 232.

And here's an excerpt from the interview with Sergei Gimaev who is considered the best KHL hockey commentator. Gimaev also played for Red Army club and was one of the veterans when Sergei Fedorov joined Red Army CSKA team as a rookie. Fedorov considered himself very lucky that he played with Gimaev.

Pavel Lysenkov, SovSport.ru, Dec. 10, 2010: Don't you think Ovechkin is carrying some extra pounds?

Sergei Gimaev: I agree on that. With his 6'2" height to have weight of 234 lbs is a bust ... More weight, more the load on your joints, you lose explosiveness. Sasha is also involved a bit too much in a physical play, which is needed only when necessary. Ideally Ovechkin should have the weight around 220 pounds (that means he needs to lose 14 pounds - tj). Now he is just too big! He has to pull 234 pounds of his own weight! It's not worth for Sasha to be so muscular. This is reflected on his the statistics.

But I will always defend Ovechkin. He understands that he needs to win the Stanley Cup. It's now or never! Sasha knows that he must win the team trophy with Washington Capitals. And the title of top NHL scorer is important, but not so much anymore.

Ovechkin can still score as many goals with his extra weight. He did it last year, he lead the NHL in goals per game especially before Vancouver Olympics.

Ovechkin probably never was the fastest skater, but he definitely was the most explosive skater. He could accelerate from zero to full speed faster than anybody else in the NHL. His most beautiful goal vs. Montreal was all about explosiveness.

He also could recover the puck easily by catching up with the opponent. Nowadays when he plays the point on a power play and gives away the puck... you'd better watch out.

So what Ovechkin should do? Go on a hunger strike? Lose some pounds? Maybe, but he is probably already lighter than he was when he entered the training camp this season. Also losing explosiveness is a natural process. That's why hockey players record the most productive seasons when they are young. And Ovi has probably only one more year left to beat his record of 65 goals in 2007-08 season (Note that in that record season he had the ideal weight Sergei Gimaev is talking about, around 220 pounds).

Most goals scored in one NHL season:
Hull 90/91 - 86 goals age 26
Fedorov 93/94 - 56 goals age 24
Yzerman 88/89 - 65 goals age 23
Lemieux 88/89 - 85 goals age 23
Selanne 92/93 - 76 goals age 22
Lindros 95/96 - 47 goals age 22
Bure 93/94 - 60 goals age 22
Gretzky 81/82 - 92 goals age 20

As you can see it takes several years after their best seasons to win the Stanley Cup.

Yzerman had to wait 10 years to win his first Stanley Cup. Stevie never scored as many goals as in 1988/89 season, but he became much better defensively and that helped the team to win the Stanley Cup.

Ovechkin was always decent defensively, maybe excluding his first season. So what Ovechkin has gained in exchange, in what aspects of the game is he better today? I think he is much better passer, and I mean better in terms of delivering the puck. His passes are softer, he has more saucer passes, in other words, the quality of his passes to his partners is better. That's very important because he will be shadowed mercilessly in the playoffs and if Ovi could draw two or more players on him and then deliver a saucer, that would be what the doctor ordered.

As of not scoring too much, I wouldn't worry about it. The most important thing is to peak for playoffs, not before. Like Sergei Gimaev said, "the title of top NHL scorer is important, but not so much anymore."

Ovechkin became the face of Gillette

Excerpt from the interview with Alex Ovechkin by sportbox.ru:
You just do not look like self today, instead of the usual bristles you have a clean-shaven face! Will you now shave in playoffs too despite the tradition?

Shave or not to shave is a private matter. I have not decided yet about playoffs, maybe I'll shave or grow a beard. By the way, in this regard we have an agreement with Gillette for me to comply with the sacred traditions. However it's too early to talk about it, first you need to get into the playoffs.

Do you want to bet in case you'll win the Stanley Cup? For example, to shave your head? Especially now, when you have the perfect tool, a Gillette razor?

If I shave my head, I'm better not to go to Russia in the summer! In reality I am very proud to represent Gillette in Russia and I want my friends and fans to just remember me every day, picking up a razor from this company. The Viking's times are long gone, and every man must look after himself.
