Ovechkin's winner of the breakaway challenge

Ovi, what are you, a Russian spy, or something? :-)

Jill Sorenson reports from the red carpet

Watch Alex Ovechkin's complete breakaway challenge from the 2011 NHL All Star Skills Competition.

Globe and Mail, Jan. 29, 2011, "Ovie dazzles NHL Skills competition";Washington Capitals forward Alexander Ovechkin brought the house down in Raleigh, N.C. during NHL all-star weekend on Saturday night with a flash of showmanship which has made him among the league’s top stars.

After three failed attempts at beating Pittsburgh Penguins goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury in the breakaway component of the NHL Skills Competition, Ovechkin raced towards goal handling the puck with the butt end of his stick.

The talented Russian then made a cross-over move, flipped his stick right side up before burying a backhanded shot past a bewildered Fleury.

The move was convincing enough for the vans to vote Ovechkin winner of the breakaway challenge.

OVECHTRICK!!! Ovie wins his third straight Breakaway Challenge by fan vote. I loved the upside-down stick move on his fourth and final attempt of the competition.

I'd also like to see video of Ovie breaking his stick during the hardest shot competition, and whatever that was routine on the ice when he looked like a fish trying to swim out of water!

Update: I should have known the videos I wanted to see would show up on YouTube eventually:

Ovi always makes it memorable. Loved his little stick move, not too flashy but still very cool, and he got it in the net :-)

@bobbyG: He tripped on the cord after his first hardest shot attempt and that's why he was "swimming" on the ice. Always so comfortable no matter what happens. Gotta love that guy.

And he managed to look nicely dressed even though he wore the same outfit both days.... and the hair looked like he just got out of bed.

@bwitch16: yes Ovie manages to steal the show even when he's an awkward klutz. I LOL during the entire sequence, that's what swung the fan vote in his favor.

I didn't notice Ovie wore the same outfit both days. Maybe he didn't bring any bags with him, only his sticks. Didn't the narrator on the HBO 24/7 series say Ovie travels light? He probably wore the same outfit on the plane going to NC and will wear the same one back to DC. That's our Ovie LOL.

@BobbyG: Well Ovi and Greenie did miss their flight to NC so who knows what they were doing before the trip....;-)

Either way he still looked very nice and damn those pants fit nice. He gets my vote for the nicest butt in the NHL.

@bwitch16: yes who knows what Ovie and Greenie were doing before their "missed" flight LOL!

I watched the pre-game show on NHL Network during player interviews in the locker room. The camera panned over to Ovie, and the interviewer quickly said (I'm paraphrasing): let's not show his secrets, move the camera away. I'm guessing Ovie was naked below the waist. Too bad uncensored HBO wasn't still filming LOL! Then we could have had a view of his "nicest butt in the NHL." I wonder if the photos would have showed up on eBay. What do you suppose the starting bid would be? If it's a Buy It Now item, it's all mine!

@BobbyG: Oh, that would have been a nice ebay item for sure. I wish they would come out with the deleted scenes from 24/7 as I'm sure there was much more of that left out ;-)
