The KHL has all sorts of great ideas, but my favorite has to be the plan for the Caps to play Moscow Dynamo, and for Ovi to switch teams halfway through. His Dynamo boss Misha Tyurkin has some interesting and perceptive comments in the interview near the bottom of the page.
I'm also kinda giggly over the offhand dismissal of the Rangers - off to Siberia with you, blueshirts! Omsk is your kind of town, trust us on this.
And I also learned we can all buy our plane tickets, as Medvedev announced at the Channel Cup that this is practically a fait accompli.
Talking about the freedom of movement or visas for Caps fans: Mikhail Tyurkin is also the head of Russian INS. :)
First, we don't need the Caps worn out from travel at the beginning of the season. Second, the NHL season is a long slog. Exhibition matches shouldn't be added to the heavy schedule. Third, when the 'Canes played a KHL team this year it was a disaster. The KHL players used it as an opportunity to play like thugs.
Fourth, playing an exhibition game in another country usually means that the NHL team will play its first games of the new season in a different country away from the fanbase that supports it. That is unfair to the fans, season ticket holders especially, since it changes the home schedule.
I don't like the idea that Moscow is "due" a game against an NHL team. NHL teams play NHL teams. KHL teams play KHL teams. That is how the leagues are set up. Nor do I like the suggestion that Ovie switch teams at the mid-point of the game. His playing contract is with the NHL. Leonsis pays him millions to play for the Caps. He is Captain of the Caps. That is the team he should play for.
"He's like the shark in Jaws, circling in the water waiting for blood. They should play that music from the movie – da-duh, da-duh, da-duh - when he's out on a shift. He doesn't just go after loose pucks, he hunts them down."
~John Davidson, President of Hockey Operations for the St. Louis Blues.

Just wanted to thank you for posting my book on your blog, which I consulted a fair bit while researching and writing the book. In particular, the comprehensive list of links on alexovetjkin.blogspot.com is the best library on Ovechkin material available anywhere.

Get your visa as soon as possible. Russian visas can take months. Moscow in September is amazing.
I hope this doesn't happen.
