Analyzing "fat Ovechkin" pictures
This has been blown out of proportion since Dan Steinberg's "Evaluating Alex Ovechkin’s torso" post.
It has been re-posted, re-tweeted, copied on numerous blogs with the titles like "HOLY BEER GUT, BATMAN!". :-) When I look at keywords that people use to get to this blog, it is like "Ovechkin fat", "alexander ovechkin recent fat pictures", "alex ovechkin weight gain" and so on. Come on, people, enough is enough.
7/9/11: He does look fat on the screen shot from the video, but it's because of the angle, some video stretch, almost like from 4:3 video to 16:9 or slouching that makes you look fatter.
The video was shot probably Saturday, July 9, 2011. In the video interview Ovi said that would start training on Wednesday or Thursday (July 14th) in Moscow.

And sure enough, here is the picture of Ovi on Thursday, July 14 in Moscow, at the RapidShot simulator. Does he look fat to you? Do I see a six pack or am I hallucinating?

Ovechkin didn't gain the weight, he LOST it. Enough said.

The "fat" pictures have been debunked. It's some sort of padding, you can see in these still photos that it's sticking out one side of his shirt. Beer guts to my knowledge don't happen on just one side of you body.

Besides you have shirtless pics of him playing soccer and you even said he looked like he lost weight. You don't get a gut like that in a matter of weeks.
I hope he puts on a fat suit and parades around in public to start even more rumors. People just have nothing better to do.
But I do miss the shirtless pictures... why are you depriving us Ovi ;-)~
Yeah, not only that but it LOOKS like he's slouching a lot, which pushed out your tummy. If he did gain that much weight, it'd be elsewhere too, like his face.
Plus, he said he just finished talking to Bruce and someone I can't remember, but either way it shows that he's thinking about training and getting ready for it.

I approve 100% of the soccer pic. <3 He lost a lot of weight, so it's fair that he gain SOME of it back, but he's still a lot better off than he was, even in the slouching picture.
Aand if he's trying to tell us he hasn't been training yet, but looks like that second picture just a few days ago, he's insane. Which I'm pretty sure he is. Well done Ovi, you've fooled half the world again!
He always said that he likes to be shirtless because he has a fine body (and I agree with that) so it kind of scares me not to see him shirtless again since the soccer game.
I think he has gained weight again, but he still is better than when he was in September and he also looks great in that picture with that kid. In the video you can also see his sides and back and he doesn't look "fat."
I would say "fat" is an exaggerated term for his actual condition, even for an exaggerate person like me hahaha!XD But I still think that he can do better than this.

IMO this "Ovie is fat" nonsense is what happens in a Caps hockey vacuum. In the Mike Vogel video and screen cap, Ovie is slouching so of course the angle distorts his midsection. Plus there is talk he was wearing a wrap of some kind so that's probably why he looks a little thicker in the middle. The photos of him shirtless playing soccer, then later with John Carlson and at the RapidShot tell the true story.
Ovie must be laughing his @$$ off at all the fuss and so should we. Bottom line, even if he is a little thick in the tummy now, it's still only late July. I'm going to wait to see what he looks like when he reports to training camp in September before I pronounce him fit or not. Even more importantly, I want to see how he responds after a vigorous skating session, to see if he recovers quickly or is gassed and winded like last year.
I'm patient, I'll give him time. Maybe now the fat police will find something else to obsess about.
I think you're not seeing the point of no shirtless pictures are important. It means he's not out partying and/or being in front of the media.
The majority of pictures found of him shirtless were either of him partying or from the DVD, so it seems like there are less. Honestly, he's probably just as shirtless as ever back home at his dasha playing bball or doing whatever he does we just don't see it.
I am not worried about his health of physical condition. The fact that everyone is getting all stuck up about this in the first place is sickening.
If the screencaps led to the belief he gained weight, fine. I still would not call that fat.
And about his breathing, the weather in Moscow is a LOT better than last year. Some fires, but they were taken care of better since they were prepared. Bottom line, the arena's aren't filled with smoke and she skies are all smoggy.
Not everyone has a flat stomach, especially after slouching. Also that shirt is all wrong for Ovie's figur,so there is nothing to be alarmed about.
This pic means nothing, Ovie is a big guy, he has never been tiny or had exceptional "washboard abs", although they have been extra tone at times.
As for other stuff I have read on here, I think it's ok if he goes out and has a beer, and puffs on a hookah in the off season, he isnt heading for certain death or career issues if he does so. He is on vacation, he needs to unwind, he's a big boy he will be fine! I am sure he has enough common sense not to continue this behavior during the regular season.
Further proof: look at the picture of Ovi standing with the Stanley.....Cup on....his...designated...day to...have.....it. OOOOH soooorrry

I didn't mean he's not allowed to drink or anything, I was talking about last year how there were many pictures coming out of him in clubs and boats. I think this years loss was a lot harder on him since they looked a lot better.
I think he's doing the right thing, he looks good.
The soccer photo is not conclusive. The shorts are obstructing analysis.

Does anyone of you know what do his tattoes mean? The one under his left arm and the symbols on his lower back?
Under left arm says "Sargey you are always in my heart", for his brother. And the other ones say "one family" on the left and "life" on the right apparently.
Ovie Fat "no way"! Its just the way he is sitting! If you think the the soccer photo is hot remember that body wrapped in a towel during hockey 24/7! Now thats something to talk about. Oh yeah, we just can't wait for hockey season! Lets Go Caps!!

He's not fat. He's three months pregnant.
He's fat and out of shape. He also posted he worst statitical year in his career, a sure sign he has jumped the shark and is on the backside of his career.
