Ovechkin and Carlson at 4th of July party on the Georgetown waterfront.

By By Daniel Swartz, Rewamp.com, July 5, 2011, "Michael Saylor Paints The (George)Town Red, White & Blue!":

And so an army of red, white, and blue (the requested party attire) descended upon the Georgetown waterfront on Sunday evening for the self-described “Beach Blast.” Produced under Freddie Wyatt’s Jamestown Entertainment banner, the guest-list only soiree saw more than 1,000 Washingtonians turn-out to celebrate.

Michael Saylor lists Ovi as one of his favorite athletes. Wait a minute, Leo Messi (Ovi's favorite) and Christiano Ronaldo? That's football... and.... Sidney Crosby?

Captain America and Caps Captain...

That's the closest Ovi could find resembling red, white, and blue after landing in DC from Moscow.

John Carlson is 6'3", 208 lb. Ovi was listed last year in official Washington Capitals media guide as 6'2", 235 lb. Looking at this picture you can tell how much weight Ovi has lost, he looks thinner than John Carlson!

He is friendly with Michael Saylor since his time in DC and they have a number of same friends. Ovi always attends his parties when he is in town. You might recall the photos of him wearing a Wizards jersey and the others wearing ref shirts (Semin, Backstrom & Federov). That was Saylor's Capital Olympics party @Charlie Palmer's. Always Capitals at these get togethers!

Man, Ovi looks good, I hope he keeps it up. Him being in the US now should help though. Maybe he'll hang out with the young Russians at development camp like Brooks Laich usually does.

He does look about the same weight at Carlson, which is good. I assume he'll start skating in August as it looks like he's been working out (despite what he says).

I love the shirt. Though, I wouldn't say a Cuba shirt is the most American thing ever, but who's going to tell him different? :D It's cool that he was there for it and spending time with his team mate. Always good to see!

I agree with previous Anonymous about how fabulous Ovie looks. He has to have been working out to look that great so maybe he hasn't been forthcoming about his training timetable. Maybe "close to August" means mid to late July for starting skating. However, I disagree about Ovie's shirt. I'm not a fan of the message Cuban Cigar Club conveys. Ovie, shed the shirt ASAP.

I have another reason for wishing the shirt gone. Shirtless Ovie will reveal how much weight he's lost and how much he's been working out. This is all for science, really...LOL :)

BTW, what are Ovie and Carlson wearing on their right wrists? Ovie's is pink (pale red?) and JC's is blue. Were the wrist bands given out to party guests to color coordinate with the red/white/blue party theme?

I think John might have a pink wristband like Ovi's on his left arm (the one around Ovi). The light blue-ish one might be from something else.

And totally agree with everyone else, Ovi looks great! :)

I'm glad he wasn't spending the 4th of July in the good ol' USA town of...Toronto... :)

Ovi was in the US, THEN went to Canada- that's what he meant my "back in the US now in Toronto, CANADA" He wouldn't have put Canada if he didn't know it was CANADA.

I know a lot of Russians don't like to speak of their workout routine. Ever notice any time someone has asked Alex Semin about his working out or practising, he either ignores it, says he's doing nothing, or asks why he should tell them. I know other Russian's are like that, too.

My dad coached a couple Russian hockey players and said they kept to the plan the trainers/coaches set out, but never said anything more when it was clear they did more. Also, from what I've seen and in what may be an unpopular opinion, Russians are some of the hardest working players I have seen. Especially the younger ones today.

Also, my dad said that a lot of hockey players don't count gym workouts as training because it's what they've done all season(in some cases) and it's a part of their every-day life. They're more likely to count skating, extra or more specific workouts, runs, swims and plyometric stuff as "training"

He looks a lot better, even more so than during the playoffs where he looked pretty good. I hope Semin has been keeping in shape too.

Orlov and Galiev were working out with Carlson, so maybe Ovi has started with them as well. His previous plans fell through, right? Who knows! (team bonding for the win!)

I do agree that there needs to be more shirtless Ovechkin pictures though. Rawr.

Besides being over the Cap currently, what does everyone think about the changes? I just hope they can get rid of someone other than Green and Semin since both bring a lot to the team, it would be a mistake to lose them. Other than that, I think GMGM has done an amazing job.

Would Michael Saylor have any friends without his money? Doubtful.

And that includes the questionably-aged girls locked in his closet.

A "guest-list only" party in DC? NO!

Amazing. Some people are still obsessing about Ovie's command of English as it relates to his knowledge of geography. That ship has already sailed, give it a rest.

I'm very impressed with GM McPhee's moves to tweak the roster. The Caps, on paper, look deeper and grittier. Whether the changes are cosmetic only for the regular season or whether they will finally translate to playoff success remains to be seen. For the Caps, April and May have been the cruelest months of late.

I think I read on Japer's Rink somewhere today the Caps have a little over 700K of cap space remaining after signing Brouwer to a 2-year contract. I also recall seeing a tweet from Neil Greenberg on the RMNB site main page there are rumors floating the Caps are shopping Semin. The tweet was from earlier today and doesn't show up due to the more current tweets on the page. I don't know if the rumors have any traction, so we'll have to wait and see what happens.

Thanks for awesome comments, everyone!

For anonymous bunch, can you use Name/URL radio-button to put some kind of nickname? Please do, it's a lot easier to refer to your cool posts for other readers and myself.

Thanks again!

A Cuban T-Shirt for a 4 of July party? hahahaha!!! Ovi you are the best! XD

He looks good!

No... Semin can't go! Ah!X(

At least TJ spelled Crosby's first name correctly--Sidney. Michael Saylor, on his Facebook page, claims Crosby is one of his favorite athletes, yet he spells Crosby's first name Sydney like the city in Australia! Plus he doesn't even capitalize the c in Crosby. Never mind whether Ovie is geography challenged, Saylor needs a lesson in spelling LOL.

Agree that Ovi is looking in good shape. I also love that these two are comfortable giving each other a hug on camera. Bromance!

@Devi: Semin update

Neil Greenberg wrote a compelling argument based on statistical analysis for the Caps to keep Semin. It's in today's Capital Insider. Greenberg states trading Semin to create cap space to sign Karl Alzner "would do more harm than good." Greenberg includes stats for the top five Caps line combos over the past two years based on points scored. Semin is on three of the top five, two of those combos without Ovie. Ovie is only on the list once without Semin. Check it out.

VARLAMOV!!!!!!!

With video, picture and all!!!

I'm glad he is happy!!!XD

His english is good and he is looking hot...
Why did we let him go?! Why?!!!!!!!!!:( (*sniff*)

BobbyG said...

@Devi: the Caps let Varly go because the stupid Avs made them an offer they couldn't refuse. Varly was on the verge of bolting to the KHL and the Caps could have lost him for nothing. Along came the Avs with a trade offer, and the Caps ended up acquiring a first round 2012 pick plus a conditional second round pick. The thing is, if the Avs had presented an offer sheet with the same contract terms, they would only have had to give up the second round pick. Rebuilding teams like the Avs can't afford to give up first round picks, especially when they're so bad that first rounder could, and probably will, be a top 5 lottery type pick.

BTW, thanks for the link to the Denver Post story and video.

Yes, please a pic of shirtless Ovi. Field Reporter Emily, you need to get on that!

@tj: Sorry, about that. I'm the 6th anon. Didn't realize you didn't have to sign up.

@BobbyG: I agree that Semin is a key part of the team. Without him on the second line, they don't have the same offensive power. I just hope, with the new acquisitions that they(Bruce) uses what they have properly.

I have no problem with Bruce, per se, but he needs to make better use of the less high-profile talent, maybe even out the lines a little. Top two get most time, but utilize the bottom two as well. Last season was a lot better for that though. Hopefully this will be even better?

@BobbyG: A lot of the shit going with the KHL was exaggerated by his Agent and father. As I'm sure you know, Russian agents like to create an NHL pull with the KHL as a fallback. "We could just take him to the KHL" is their first argument for a small contract.

Yes, he turned down a contract but he wanted to stay. The Caps had a trade ready for him a week before he was traded(So they were already planning it), but called it off because he couldn't be guaranteed a starting position and they wanted that for him.
The trade with the Avs proved he was going to be a starter, it was discussed the day before the trade took place, if I'm not mistaken.

I think he'll do well on the Avs. I sure hope so. Every time a Russian doesn't succeed in the eyes of a North American, they get shunned and people believe Russians are evil.

Also, I think getting Giguere was a good move. Before he left the Leafs, he said he would be happy with at least 10 games, so being a backup would be no problem. Also, they have similar styles so Varly could learn a lot from him.

Ovechkin made more tweets, he was in Colorado (I'm guessing with Varly?)
