Ovechkin is leaving CCM to Bauer

Saw several tweets today about Ovechkin switching his endorsement from CCM to Bauer:

Source for Sports
Official: CCM Announced today that Ovechkin will be leaving the company's roster for 2011-2012.

Facebook:
In case you don't follow us on twitter (@sourcenation).. CCM is set to make big announcement this week.. Alex Ovechkin will no longer be the companies poster boy.

Somebody has to repaint that van:

Ovi was using Bauer sticks as early as 3 years ago because he was unhappy with CCM ones.

eBay:
HERE IS A RARE ITEM OF NHL SUPERSTAR ALEX OVECHKIN OF THE WASHINGTON CAPITALS...HERE IS A GAME USED NIKE BAUER STICK FROM THE SEASON 2008-2009 SEASON--HIS MVP SEASON!!!!

Nicklas Backstrom is a happy Bauer endorser.

There was a concern who would get the bowling ball bag:

 Ted Starkey

Here's the answer dated back to Feb. 6, 2011:
@jfordnetvantage Little known fact: I'm taking Ovi's head in a bowling ball bag when I leave.

Ovi's head is in good hands!

Great headline.

It seemed like Ovie broke a lot of CCM sticks and fell down often with CCM skates. I know I and others commented how he must be displeased with CCM for supplying him with what seemed like inferior sticks and skates. So I'm not surprised he's going back to using Bauer equipment.

i think the bauer stick switch is an amazing idea. I have bought several ovie CCM sticks and played with a couple up here in AK and they are so thin and lightweight every time I leaned on one I felt it would snap I can only imagine what a full time NHLer must feel to play with them. I think I recall Green uses Bauer sticks and he used the same stick for all 8 games during his 8 game goal scoring streak, no way could one of Ovie's stick last 8 mins in a game let alone 8 straight games.

You people are aware his CCM sticks are really just painted over Bauers?

Both Backstrom and Semin use Bauer sticks. While normally he would use a CCM stick, there was at least one occasion back in the 2008-2009 season where he used a Bauer.

I actually own on Ovi action figure where he had a Bauer stick but most of them had him with CCM.

Now the next question, what will happen to his clothing line? IIRC, it was affiliated with CCM.

@noah look at the shaft of CCM stick and then look at the one of a bauer and then with a straight face try to say your comment again.

even in the picture of Backie on this article the shaft of his bauer stick is much thicker then any shaft of a CCM stick Ovie uses

Greenie used a discontinued version of a Easton Stick. I think it was a Stealth s15.

What is the chance that CCM is dropping him, instead of him dropping CCM? I cant see CCM having a press conference/announcement if they are the ones being dropped...

During this past year's ASG, he broke his CCM stick on the 1st skills copmpetition and didnt think twice when he grabbed someone's Easton. Seems like a long time coming.

@Steph,

Nil. Ovie is a big money maker for CCM and he's been pretty game with their crazy commercials.

I'm happy for this! Not much of a CCM fan. The skates are alright, but I prefer Bauer anyway. Especially Vapor brand. When I was younger I had mostly Cooper, with Bauer-type sticks. Not Bauer though, it was some Russian company who "modelled" it's self after Bauer.

When I got older though it was mostly actual Bauer products. Very good stuff.

I also don't like the CCM ads. I just don't find them funny.

@Steph: I can't really see why they wouldn't do press stuff if they are not with him anymore. Advertising is different than with other things. If he has good agent, they make company do a public release so people don't assume he's still there.

Steph said...

@Yulina - I know nothing about marketing and that sounds plausible. Thanks for giving me another perspective!

Yulina said...

Np! I don't know too much about marketing, but growing up around Russian markets where, not to give them a bad name, but they'll stiff you if they can. Professional contracts usually work much better and I'd imagine agents know what they're doing!

hey, thats my photo!! check my twitter @gregpcox no credit given?!?!

CCM did drop him, he wanted $3mill a season, but wouldnt guarantee wearing or using their current equipment. he liked the old Vectors, rather than the new CLs. they pay Sid $1mill (reebok is same company as CCM) so they'd never go more than that. Ov also signed a deal with Nike to sell their shoes...@gregpcox (twitter).

that was my photo they used for the van too, it's driven by a friend of mine. I dont remember getting asked to use it though Bloggers!

If I'm not mistaken Nike/Bauer and CCM are owned by the same company. So this isn't really that big of a story.

peleaphy said...

CCM is own by Reebok, which is in turn owned by Adidas.

Chris said...

@Andrew
No, Bauer and CCM are definitely not owned by the same company, in fact they're huge rivals. I think you mean CCM and Reebok are both owned by Adidas.

ovie should switch to warrior, not only do they make great sticks, they are the most stylin sticks in the game
