Ovechkin in Kettler wearing Bauer
What Alex Ovechkin was doing in August of 2005?
Here's Mike Vogel:
Caps captain Alex Ovechkin landed on U.S. soil yesterday, six years to the day after he first put pen to paper to sign his entry-level NHL contract with the Capitals. Ovechkin actually agreed to that initial pact in early August of 2005, but didn’t arrive in North America until the latter part of the month.
Ovechkin – then living out the final weeks of his teen-aged years – signed the contract in the office of Caps general manager George McPhee. A press conference was held at Verizon Center on Sept. 1, 2005, and the young phenom was introduced to the local hockey media for the first time.

Ovie picked a great day September 1 to return to the US. I didn't realize it was the 6th anniversary of his signing his Caps contract until now.
If Ovie already has custom equipment, it had to have already been in the works before it was announced he was leaving CCM. As TJ noted on another thread, it takes time to create gear such as sticks to Ovie's specifications. If so, it had to be kept under wraps while he was still contractually obligated to CCM.
Kessler? You mean Kettler?
Thanks whoever noted a typo. It's embarrassing, but I am human, like anybody else.
The other day I had a post with word 'ready' twice, like 'I am ready 70% ready' and nobody noticed...
No wonder when he said he was coming back earlier because he'd train with Nemish and had some business to do; he has a lot of business to do before camp starts.
RMNB has a fabulous photo essay about the timeline of Ovie's summer. Great read with lots of photos. Check it out.
On another thread here on TJ's blog there's reference to Tarik El-Bashir's comments about Ovie's special announcement September 6. TEB speculates it's not team related, which would seem to eliminate the Captain's C scenario. TEB also says it could be about what equipment Ovie will be using this season. Maybe I'm missing something here, but if Ovie is endorsing Nike and is already using Bauer equipment in practice, what is the necessity to hold a press conference to state what's already obvious?
i just read an article saying ovie was entirely clad in bauer gear including skates, stick, gloves, pants, helmet ,etc. and that he seemed to have a good stride while scoring goals in the game of shinny.
Just to clarify... Ovi isn't "holding a press conference." He will be having media availability, as usual, during which he is going to make an announcement. It isn't like he is summoning the media (a la LeBron).
@previous Anonymous: yes you are correct, technically it's media availability not holding a press conference. Thanks for clarifying. Ovie might be very flamboyant at times, but IMO he wouldn't do a flashy LeBron James type stunt.
It has apparently been confirmed that the announcement is not about him resigning his C. Good news. Perhaps he is a Papa! :P
As I said, I'm not going to speculate becuase there is no point, but it's probably further explanation of his endorsement. Long-term Nike deal for a hockey player is pretty big news.
