Ovechkin's Mom: This is a horrible tragedy
Life.ru reports about Alex Ovechkin's Mom reaction to a plane crash with entire Lokomotive hockey team in Russia:
And here's Ovi's and John Carlson's reactions:
Video from the place where plane crashed
Semyon Varlamov owes George McPhee big time. If he wouldn't be traded to Avalanche, he would've been on that plane too because Locomotive claimed they had KHL rights on Varly.
Magomed Tolboev, a test pilot, suggested possible causes of the tragedy in Yaroslavl airport Tunoshna where YAK-42 plane with hockey club "Locomotive" fell after takeoff.Source: http://www.sports.ru/hockey/121223041.html
Tolboev suggested that the plane would have fallen during take-off as a result of all engines failure or because of the pilot's mistakes. He noted that Yak-42 aircraft has a very reliable record.
"Yak-42 never had accidents due to technical reasons. AN-24, Tu-34, Yak-40, Yak-42, these aircrafts were raped by operators who got them free from the Soviet Union. Planes are falling and will fall. It is still just a beginning, because aircraft are worn to the limit, but there are no new ones [to replace them]"
Update:
The test pilot was right about Yak-42 reliability. ITAR-TASS reported that the plane collided with a beacon antenna upon takeoff after being unable to gain safe altitude (via Stu Hackel)
I kind of feel a bit better that it was not the plane itself (can you imagine if it's true that all Russian planes are worn to the limit?), but human's error, pilot's fault. The plane could possibly carried too much load and pilot didn't recognize it in time probably.

This is a terrible news. R.I.P. to all players and coach stuff. We lost a great player - Pavol Demitra. It´s so sad...I have no words
This is terrible news. My thoughts and prayers go out to the families and friends of all the victims. R.I.P.
OT to this topic, but on another thread I commented further to those who inferred I thought Ovie was going to fight Bradley. I never said it and never intended to suggest it. Don't jump to conclusions without any facts.
Actually TJ, Malamud posted on twitter today that Varly wasn't seriously considering playing for Lokomotiv. I feel bad for Varly though, he must have lost many friends.

@ngreenberg @VTcaps Varly never tuly lookedt at Koko as a possibility. This was a non-starter. But he has lost too many friends today.

Semyon Varlamov: "I am in shock". All he has to say right now.
opps I messed up that twitter post above.

@ngreenberg @VTcaps Varly never truly looked at Loko as a possibility. This was a non-starter. But he has lost too many friends today.
@AB,
I call b.s. on that statement. Varly was nearly out the door to Russia and Lokomotiv when the trade was worked out. He might have wanted to be on the St. Petersburg team, but the two KHL teams weren't coming to an agreement.
He should send McPhee flowers with a card saying "Sorry I was an asshole during contract negotiations."
First, this is terrible news.
@Anonymous: Second, why he should send flowers to McPhee? Varly only wanted to be the number 1 in the capitals or somewhere else in the NHL! That's something every player looks for!
I don't think this is the time to talk about contracts that didn't even happen. This is a big loss for him, for Ovie, for team Russia and for the country.
So shove those flowers in you butt, asshole!
C'mon, guys & gals, not a good day for fighting :(
@TJ:
Yes, I know sorry.
Yesterday, I was having so much fun with the new videos and then boom! Tragedy! I feel so depress that I can't even work on my home work.
How terrible. So many good players and people lost. I always admired Demitra.
@Devi: I know how you feel. I was really excited for KHL to start today and tomorrow but now I have empty, numb feeling. I hope they delay start because I can't even think properly, how do they expect entire khl to get back on feet so soon?
@Devi,
You must be very young or ignorant about workplaces.
Someone in Varly's position has no right to demand the #1 position or threaten to go home. He still has restricted contract levels and was not free to do whatever he wanted. He can fight for the position like everyone else until he is proven and has seniority.
McPhee didn't like having a valued asset walk for free and worked a trade where everyone was happy. Unless Varly came back to the Caps with his tail between his legs this season it looks like he'd be dead now. So in a way McPhee saved his life.
My brother, who is an aircraft mechanic, says that these planes are solid, but poorly maintained due to budget issues affecting Russian aviation...R.I.P and I am really pulling for Galimov!
