Oh dear, where to begin...
Ovie continues his pattern of keeping us guessing and speculating, first about his offseason training, and now this.
I can think of at least 5 reasons for this special announcement, some already mentioned on another thread. What could it be?
1--decision on new endorsement deal. Is this realistic, to make a big splash about whose equipment he'll be using? It sounds a liitle over-the-top dramatic to me.
2--marital status, well I suppose it's possible, it makes more sense for a hockey player to get married in the offseason for planning purposes and not have to deal with it once hockey season is underway. If Ovie got married in the last few monthe, maybe when he was in Turkey or France...wow, what a bombshell that would be. If he found someone quickly and made the leap, IMO he wouldn't do it in Moscow given how the media watches his every move. If he got hitched in a very private ceremony while on vacation, this will be the Caps story of the year. And it also oould be a potential major distraction for him. So while it's possible, I don't think it's likely IF Ovie is really serious about being more committed than ever to winning the Stanley Cup.
3--resigning the Captaincy, well that's possible too, but he and Coach Booudreau talked about this in July during Ovie's DC visit. Ovie asked the coach what he had to do to be better, and Boudreas said he wanted a more seriouls tone and attitude by the team, and for Ovie to take his leadership role a step further. Is it possible this is out the window, that Ovie decided over the last month that he's not up to the task? I just can't believe he'd give up the C, it would be so unlike him not to follow through on a commitment. So while it's possible, I can't see it happening.
4--his weight and training, well why would Ovie feel he has to explain himself or rationalize his decisions to the media at this time? The only benefit I could see with this scenario is, Ovie waits for the assembled media to gather, then rises and lifts his shirt then completely removes it, pointing to his torso and other upper body parts. He simply says "See?" and then leaves the room while everyone gasps and shouts out questions. Ovie leaves them in silence, point made.
5--Ovie announces he's applied for US citizenship because he realize he loves the US as much as Russia, he loves living and working in DC and how the Caps organization and fans have treated him. This scenario dovetails and relates to #2, maybe Ovie has decided to expand his search for a wife to include American girls and wants to show prospective candidates that he's just as committed to this country as he is to his native Russia.
Of course, Ovie could be planning to announce he's moving to a new house where he won't be awakened at 5am by the sounds of stalkers going through his trash, and where he won't have to answer the doorbell to fans asking for autographs. He might also reveal why he shipped his Brabus to Russia, why Varly's car was parked in his driveway, and who's been driving the Ovi/Batmobile around DC lately. :)
As much as I agree that it's over-the-top to set up a press conference in advance to do so, my money's on announcing a move to Bauer.

A fat suit... That would be a FABULOUS joke to play on everyone!!! Especially since he is looking good...
Im going to guess its a new charity. Its the endorsers job to make announcements, not Ovis. Nor can I see him announcing a new SigO. And if he were giving up the C, I believe the organization would make that announcement. Since it will be coming from his mouth, it will be something positive. Just my two cents...
This reminds me slightly of the LeBron James hoopla. I hope its about a new charity.
many of the ideas people posted were exactly ones I was thinking too. This reminds me of when over the summers caps management say a trade is coming and then it's finally announced and a couple of prospects are swapped...lol I'm afraid it won't be as big as we all think/hope it will be.
but...I think it might be him announcing a new equipment company
or possibly he got engaged, maybe not married cause it would seem rather quick
I'd rather he not give up his captaincy but if he did I wouldn't see it as him giving up on a committment because if you recall Patrick Marleau gave up his C so he could just focus on his role on the team without the added pressure of being Captain and it did wonders for his game and for the team as a whole an now Joe Thorton is Captain. I'd hate to see Ovie without a C because I always saw him as captain even when Clark wore the C but if anything it'd be very admirable of him if he gave it up.
as far as the other ideas none of them seem so big and noteworthy enough that they need to be announced in front of the media, he could just announce them on his twitter lol.

Could we now rule out the equipment thing since it's now been announced that he's going with Nike, the former parent company of Bauer.

I think we can rule out the endorsement deal as the reason for the special announcement. No need for that now that the Nike deal is out in the open.
I hope the announcement is what Steph suggests, it's about a new charity or more involvement in one he already supports. I hope he isn't giving up the Captaincy, but if it is it still sucks even if it's for the Patrick Marleau reason Marge gave.
I also hope he's not engaged to be married either. If wearing the C is a distraction from playing hockey, I can only imagine the impact of such a huge personal life-changing decision getting married would do to Ovie's focus and attention. Being engaged involves a lot of emotional investment and commitment. Is he seriously thinking of dividing his attention and emotional commitment this year?
Fortunately, whatever his reasons, we'll find out in a few days what's up with Ovie.
On the Nike thread AB says Ovie's IMG agent confirmed the deal. So maybe the special announcement is to tell the world face-to-face why he chose Nike, and then use this opportunity to relate his choice to his commitment to hockey and focus on winning the Stanley Cup. Ovie doesn't do things in small measures or halfway. So even if everyone will know he's chosen Nike, he might want to tell us why.
NEW: AB has updated the Nike thread. Tarik-El Bashir is saying the Nike deal is not the reason for the special announcement, but thinks it's another endorsement deal of some sort.
I'm hoping it has to do with a charity, not an engagement or another candy bar or some other commercial product. The Captain's C thing might also be on the table. We'll see.
