Caps 3, Isles 5 (video update)

Vokoun, Backstrom, Laich, Ward, Hendricks, Alzner and Ovi speak to media after the loss to Isles

The bad news is Caps lost and lost to a team they were supposed to beat. Just when you think Caps finally have a solid #1 goalie, he gives some juicy rebounds and lets soft goals.

Ovi scores his 6th goal of the season to make it 2:0

The a good news is Ovi is getting there, he looked a lot like vintage Ovechkin. In the first period he was just flying, had 3:58 of total ice time and made 3 shots on goal, scored one. He looked good well for the rest of the game, but after he scored Isles paid much more attention to him, 3 shots were blocked, 3 missed the net.

Ovi's stats:
After 1st period:

1 goal, +1, 1 penalty (2min), total ice time 03:58, 6 shifts, average shift 00:39, PP 00:22, even 03:36, 3 shots on goal

After 2nd period:
1 goal, +1, 1 penalty (2min), total ice time 10:01, 12 shifts, average shift 00:50, PP 00:22, Shorthanded 00:07, even 09:32, 3 shots on goal, 1 attempt blocked, 1 missed

End of game:
1 goal, +1, 1 penalty (2min), total ice time 18:01, 20 shifts, average shift 00:54, PP 00:50, even 17:04, 3 shots on goal, 3 attempts blocked, 3 missed

I dunno why people are always surprised of the outcome when we play the Islanders, these games are either a low scoring one goal game, OT games or the Caps win without really dominating. Luckily the Caps killer wasn't a factor tonight the captain Mr. Streit but Isles/Caps games are always a poor showing by the Caps. It's just regular season against a non-divisional team, doesn't really matter.

It's just one game and the Caps shouldn't be worrying about it. They need to focus on the big picture.

We could have used a goalie who stuck around for the whole game.Ovi was great, as he was against the Caines.Guess we can't win 'em all.

What I am worried is that BB will stop believing in Vokoun and start the goalie's musical chairs game again. And that would be another early exit for Caps. Every time Vokoun will play sub-par game this season, I will be worried about BB decision not to treat him as #1.

I agree, a regular season loss against a non-division opponent is not that big a deal. If, however, it starts a trend of the Caps playing down to the level of an inferior opponent, then I would be concerned. The season is still way too early to determine what habits or trends the Caps will develop, so I'll wait and see.

However, like TJ, I'm concerned about the goalie situation. Vokoun has looked very ordinary at times, and I hope he re-establishes his dominance in his next few starts so we don't get a musical chairs rotation of goalies. The Caps need to know who is #1, they need to have confidence in him, if they hope to go far in the playoffs.

Special post @O: I've been offline for a few days and just today saw your questions directed at me on another thread.

In case you don't go back to older threads, I'll tell you here that I'm home again after an absolutely wonderful trip to DC. The experience of seeing Ovie and the Caps in person, at games and practices, is priceless to me. Ovie is a charmer, much more attractive in person than is evident on TV or in photos or videos. I had a blast.

@BobbyG,

Glad you had a great time! Yeah, the boys are charmers, even that Ovi guy. Were you at Kettler when some of the players had their dogs there for an animal rescue league promo? I hope you get another chance to come to DC soon.

@O: No, I wasn't at Kettler when some of the players had their dogs there for an animal rescue promo. However, I was at Madame Tussauds when Ovie's wax figure was unveiled so that was an extra special treat. :)

I don't know if or when I will get another chance to return to DC. I have health issues, plus this trip was made possible due to the kindness and generosity of some special people, otherwise it would never have happened. If fate/karma allows, I'll try to come back. For now I'm still on cloud 9 from this trip.
