Phoenix 3, Caps 4
An uneventful night for Ovi, eventful for Crosby, hopefully it will change...
Greg Wyshynski:
When asked if Crosby's return would motivate him, Ovechkin said "yeah," but followed by saying: "It doesn't matter; Sidney over there, somebody else over there … I have to play my game."
As for Crosby's four-point night in his return to the ice, Ovechkin said: "I didn't see the game, so … it's good for him, coming back from long-term injury. So it's good for him."
Ovi's stats:
1 assist, +1, total ice time 18:15, 20 shifts, average 00:54, PP 04:24, even 13:51, 1 shot on goal, 3 attempts blocked, 2 missed, 3 hits, 1 takeaway

Oh, Ovie, really. Despite what you said I believe Sid's return is on your mind. A LOT. Someone with your competitiveness won't let something like that slide. Sid's comeback might be the best thing to happen to you if you let it motivate you to do better. He's the ying to your yang, you are forever bound together in hockey history. Carpe diem. Now is the time to seize the moment and make the rest of this season one for the ages, one for the history books. Are you up to the challenge? Then go for it!
I'm that that Sid's return will have a positive impact on Ovie. Great players motivate each other to elevate their fame to new heights.
I was at the game last night and my take away was that Ovi looked very sad during warm-ups and during the celebration at the end.
It made me really worried as he usually looks pretty happy and chipper during warm-ups and always is very exhuberant at the end. No chest-bump with Voukon, what? Brouwer tried to cheer him up by messing with him when they were going off the ice afterwards.....
But at least they won and it's a good thing. I'll be at the game on Wednesday so hopefully they'll win then too ;-)
I would rather watch a mediocre Ovie than that media showboat Sid any day...All that "Sid" media coverage yesterday was downright nauseating.
The Pens played a team close to the bottom of the conference with a rookie goalie in net.Jeez--how difficult is it for "Sid" to get a few points with that script?
@bwitch,
It's good that his teammates are trying to lift his spirits. The more I see him without his customary sparkle, the more convinced I am that something beyond hockey is going on.
I thought he looked better on the ice last night than he did the two games before that. Baby steps.
@bwitch16: it sounds like what I observed about Ovie when I was in DC has gotten worse. I noted then that he looked tense, but there were times during practices when he seemed to relax, he smiled and joked with teammates. After practices he signed autographs gladly, except when he rushed off the day his wax figure was unveiled at Madame Tussauds. But he was gracious enough to tell the fans why he couldn't stop to sign. During games he was mostly serious, but he seemed happy when teammates scored and did chest bump the winning goalie whether it was Vokoun or Neuvy.
I agree with O, something beyond hockey is going on with Ovie. It's great that his teammates are trying to lift his spirits, so that's a sign of a team pulling together to help each other.
And...to the Crosby haters: what he accomplished goes beyond what team the Pens were playing. I'm happy he's back, he is one of the best players in the world whether you acknowledge it or not. And which player, Ovie or Sid, you'd rather watch play also has nothing to do with what Sid accomplished. Just because you're 100% Ovie fans doesn't mean you have to hate Sid or resent his comeback stats.
