Caps 2, Sabres 4, at least Titanic had Ovechkin

You could see Ovi got mad after Kaleta's trying to take his knee out. In old times when Ovi would get mad, he'd score 4 goals. He scored 1 goal tonight, at least, while the Washington Capitals ship sinked.

Ovechkin's stats after the 1st period:

2 min penalty, total ice time 07:41, 7 shifts, average 01:05, PP 2:43, even 04:58, 3 shots on goal, 2 attempts blocked, 2 hits, 1 giveaway

After the 2nd:
2 min penalty, total ice time 14:30, 13 shifts, average 01:06, PP 5:29, even 09:01, 4 shots on goal, 2 attempts blocked, 3 hits, 3 giveaways 1 blocked shot

After the 3rd:
1 goal, 2 min penalty, total ice time 22:02, 21 shifts, average 01:02, PP 6:13, short handed 00:26, even 15:23, 5 shots on goal, 4 attempts blocked, 5 hits, 4 giveaways 1 blocked shot

After the game: Brouwer, Hendricks, Ovi, Alzner, Vokoun

The Caps came out flat and looked lost for the first half of the game. Cutting to the chase, they were ultimately done in by a really really BAD 1st period. In case they forgot, offense is generated by good defense. The Caps had zilch defense in the 1st, and it was lights out early.

Ovie's power play goal was nice to see. But it was too little, too late, and too many giveaways. Yeah, in the good old days he would have responded to Kaleta with a vengeance a lot sooner and with multiple scores. Time to go back to the video room for this team to see what they did wrong, which was plenty in the first half of the game.
