Game 1 and 2 open thread

I will be back Tuesday for game 3 and won't have any internet access over where I am going (whitewater trip in the National forest). So post your comments to help me get back on track.

Don't be surprised if the Caps will lose the first one, they will be rusty, which can lead to giveaways and turnovers. This happened to other teams in Caps situation before. I believe these going to be be longer series than vs. Rangers. Hope I am wrong, but you know, hope for the best (Hockey Gods, please be with us!), prepare for the worst.

Go Caps, go Ovi!

Ovechkin talks after Thursday's morning skate

Oh no, not Dwayne Roloson!

I guess I've just jinxed it! In in the previous post I said the last guy I wanted to see in the second round was Dwayne Roloson.

Dwayne who? Halak? No, Dwayne Roloson, who won 6 playoff games facing elimination in his career. By the way, Jaroslav Halak won 5.

Roloson is one of those guys who can stop Ovechkin, another one is Roberto Luongo. Not too many guys can brag about stopping Ovechkin, but Dwayne is one of them.

Anyhow, this guy is very irritable grumpy old man. And Caps have Matt Hendricks who knows how to handle it.

Here's what Matt Hendricks said to Mike Vogel, Dump'n'Chase:

“Part of my game is obviously going to the net hard. But we’ve got good coaches around here and good scouting reports. They’ve watched him his last few games and he does retaliate. If you get in his crease and if you make contact with him, he’s not a happy camper. I wasn’t trying to end up on top of him; I was trying to make him a little upset.

“It is what it is. I think I got in his head a bit and I think it helped our team.”

Accidentally Matt Hendricks got involved in the fight in the same game with another guy I don't want to see in playoffs vs Caps, it is Steve Downie. You can expect any kind of foul play from him, one of the dirtiest players in entire NHL. I'd say he is worse than Pronger in his prime, luckily he is not that big.

And who's trap is going to be better, Bruce Boudreau's or Guy Boucher's? I guess the edge goes to Boucher just because he always played it. Here's an interesting post by Damian Cristodero back in Nov. 3, 2010:
Patrick Roy said that the system Tampa Bay Lightning coach Guy Boucher used from 2006-09 as coach of Drummondville of the Quebec league, was not only too defensive it has permeated the league and stunted the development of some Quebec league players.

Roy then told the Journal de Montreal that, "Boucher did nothing to help our league advance. His defensive system was copied by many other teams. I know my comments will not please Guy, but for me hockey should be focused on offense not defense."

So perhaps the Lightning, with its 1-3-1 system tries to stifle teams in the neutral zone. It does have elements of the trap, after all. And the Lightning does send two defensemen into the corners of the defensive zone to harass puck carries, and that does force the forwards to come back to the defensive zone to take defensive positions abandoned by the defensemen.

And no one can argue Tampa Bay's transition from defense to offense is quick and dramatic.

The most memorable game vs. Tampa was on Feb. 4, 2011 when Caps seemed to solve Tampa's trap and beat them 5:2. It is memorable because after getting the lead Capitals defensemen kept the puck in their own zone and were passing the puck to each other forth and back totally annoying Bolts. Here's what Matt Bradley said back then (via Capitals Insider):
"Bruce and the coaches had a great system. We even got their fans frustrated with the way we were playing. I thought we really stuck with it and that's what definitely helped us toward the end when they were pushing."
There was also a quote by Boudreau that I can't find; he said that for one day they solved Boucher's system, but usually the other side would find something to counter it next time.

But here's what I found via Mike Vogel:
“We had a chance for the first time in a long time,” says Caps coach Bruce Boudreau, “and we just focused in practice on beating Tampa. That was what our whole focus was. It wasn’t about doing different things and how we did it. It was about going over a lot of video on them.

These series are going to be very tough, make no mistake about it. But if Caps will eliminate Bolts, the sky is the limit. I know I said it about the first round too. :-)

Who will Caps be playing Friday?

1. Caps vs. Habs (Montreal must beat Boston tonight)
2. Caps vs. Bolts (Montreal loses to Boston, Tampa wins)
3. Caps vs. Pens (Boston wins, Pittsburgh wins)

Seeds
#1. Caps
#2. Flyers
#3. Bruins
#4. Pens
#5. Bolts
#6. Habs

Who do you want to see Friday against Caps? To me, I don't want to see Roloson, he's been very successful against Caps, other goalies are solvable.

One down, more to go

OvechkinBruce Boudreau talks to media after a win 3:1 over NY Rangers

Na na na na, na na na na, hey hey-ey, goodbye Rags ( We are louder :-)

Eric Fehr
Not gonna lie, thats the loudest I've ever heard Verizon Center! Great win, thanks for the help fans!

As I predicted Ovi had a great game, awesome fake shot and pass to Green for game winning goal by Greenie, then a goal on a breakaway where Ovi usually doesn't score, but he did this time.

Ovechkin's stats:
after 1st:
1 assist, total ice time 06:53, 7 shifts, average 00:59, PP 01:56, even 04:57, 1 shot on goal, 2 attempts blocked, 1 missed, 3 hits

after 2nd:
1 goal, 1 assist, total ice time 12:04, 13 shifts, average 00:55, PP 02:59, even 09:05, 2 shots on goal, 3 attempts blocked, 3 missed, 3 hits

final:
1 goal, 1 assist, +1, total ice time 20:03, 22 shifts, average 00:54, PP 02:59, even 17:04, 4 shots on goal, 3 attempts blocked, 3 missed, 3 hits

Scary, the screws from the helmet flying after the puck hit it, wow...

Update:
Another GWG for Ovi! (H/t to BobbyG):
Green didn't get the game winning goal, Ovie did! If there was a shutout, Green would have had the GWG since he scored first. But since the Rangers scored one late, Ovie gets the GWG because he got the second goal.

Can't stop him

I've read only the part that was available, but even that was enough for me to say this, "an excellent article by Neil Greenberg from RMNB, congrats!"

Since I don't have ESPN Insider access, let's listen to Mike Hume, ESPN New York, Apr. 22, 2011:

According to the ESPN Insider article, Staal and Girardi have yielded a disproportionate amount of scoring chances to Ovechkin's line, with scoring chances defined as "a clear play directed toward the opposing net from a dangerous scoring area -- loosely defined as the top of the circle in and inside the faceoff dots." The data shows that the Caps have earned 61.5 percent of the scoring chances when Ovechkin's line matched up against Girardi-Staal at even strength during the regular season. That marks the highest percentage of any "shutdown" defensive pairing in the Eastern Conference playoffs against Ovechkin. In fact, Ovechkin's line performed about four percent better against the Girardi-Staal tandem than "non-shutdown" pairings it faced this season.

Should Staal and Girardi look for janitor jobs, like this goalie who couldn't stop Fedorov in this old Nike Commercial?

Nah, they did an excellent job, they followed all known templates on how to shut down Ovechkin. The problem is Ovi doesn't score vintage Ovechkin goals anymore.

There are no goals scored on wrist shots from behind defenceman or slapshots from a point. And it is only partially because of Staal or Girardi, but for the most part because these weapons no longer work for Ovi. Again, I attribute it to bad pre-season and bad conditioning as a result.

But just like Crosby, who doesn't have and never had these weapons, Ovi started driving to the net and scoring "ugly goals". He has adjusted his game, that what great players do.

Can't stop him now.

Ovechkin talks to media on Good Friday

Ovi:
[about last year's game 5 and first 10 minutes when Habs took the lead 2:0]:
I don't remember nothing. I forget about it... Tomorrow the first 10 minutes will be very important for us and for them too.

[about Laich replacing Knuble on his line]:
He’s a hard-working guy. He’s the same, probably like Knubs, good in front of the net, good in the corners. And you know he plays well in the defensive zone so it help us a lot.

Ovi's gonna have a blast tomorrow, I guarantee it.

Let's talk about the first 10 minutes of the game. What worries me is that Caps, with all home crowd support, might start running and gunning again. That would be a harbinger to disaster. That's how they lost to Montreal last year in game 5, to Penguins in game 7. Ideally the score after the first 10 minutes or first 20 minutes should be 0:0. And then Caps will finish Rags.

Go Caps, go Ovi!

How bizarre, How bizarre...

I still cannot believe it, I think I said it like 100 times tonight... Caps win after being behind 0-3. It would be a tough pill to swallow for Rangers, leading 3-0 and losing 3-4.

Alex Ovechkin, by his own standards, had one of the sub-par games tonight. He was still very present and did make a big impact on the game, but not like he used to be... He could've been a hero tonight scoring on a breakaway, did not happen... Again he looked like a fish out of the water, it shows his conditioning is the worst ever since he joined the NHL.

Ovechkin's stats:

-2, 1 pen (2min), total ice time 30:07, 32 shifts, average 00:56, PP 06:37, even 23:30, 4 shots on goal, 6 attempts blocked, 4 missed, 3 hits, 2 giveaways, 1 blocked shot.

Eventually he ended up not seeing much of the ice time in the final overtime period, Bruce Boudreau decided to put money on other players who looked fresher and it worked.

What is good about it that now the team can carry Ovi like he used to carry the team. Like I said before, Ovi's conditioning will improve, he'll get in a better shape. He was very good in game 1, not so in game 2, good in game 3, not so in game 4... Watch him in game 5, he will bury Rangers! :-)

My favorite Caps forward of the last 3-4 months Marcus Johansson. a.k.a. MoJo, was terrific tonight, to me he is the most creative Caps forward and now definitely is the number one Caps center-forward no matter what line he plays.

Katie Carrera, Capitals Insider:
...late in the second period, after Dubinsky’s tally, Boudreau had altered the lines from those that started the game. He put Chimera on the third unit with Eric Fehr, who made his playoff debut, and Johansson and created a unit with plenty of speed. As the game wore on from the third period into the two overtime frames, that unit appeared to be the one with the most jump.

Johansson scored Washington’s second and third goals, while Fehr was on the ice for both and those two players were both on for Chimera’s game winner in the 93rd minute of the contest.

And the cucumber? That guy who is "as cool as a cucumber", how could he be so calm even after Rags scored 3 goals? Unbelievable... Neuvy is a goalie to go, he now has deserved numero uno status!

MoJo starts it... Chimera finishes it... OT Game Winner by Jason Chimera

Bruce "Can you hear me now?" Boudreau finally agrees:
"I probably made a mistake by saying what I said" (@ 2:00)

From Tweeter...

AGrossRecord:
Alex Ovechkin: "It was an exciting game. It changes our mentality right away."

TGfireandice:
Ovechkin: " If we play the same way, no one can stop us -- the way we played in the third period and overtime."

Ovechkin won't get an extra nap, step closer to meet Crosby

Is it even freaking legal? :-)

from Twitter / AGrossRecord
  • In the playoffs, Rangers will be conducting morning skates at Madison Square Garden instead of their practice facility.
  • Most Rangers living in the city. Also ensures Capitals have to wait until 11:30 to skate so they don't get extra hour to nap.

Yes, it is. Do whatever you can to make the opposing team uncomfortable. I won't be surprised if the guest's locker room would be repainted before game 4 for the fumes, so that players won't be able to breathe there.
"But your Coach Bruce Boudreau complained that dressing room at MSG doesn't look good!"

It actually happened before in the history of playoffs; the guest's locker room repaint, as well as the false fire alarm that went on in the middle of the night in the hotel where Avs stayed in Red Wings - Avalanche series.

I totally agree that Rags were targeting Green and Boudreau's comment on that is very appropriate to raise awareness of the officials. However his comment on MSG (lousy and not being loud) was unnecessary, just like last year's comment on Plekanec, "Tomas who? Jagr?" Tomas scored OT winner in the next game. You never know, why give opposing team anything extra that could motivate if not Rangers then MSG audience?

from Twitter / AGrossRecord2 thoughts on new NBC/Versus deal for NHL:
1. Heights probability of participation in 2014 Olympics;
2. Lessens chance for another lockout.

And he is right, since NBC is covering the Olympics, they will be heavily lobbying NHL to participate in Sochi-2014 games. All goes well for Ovi in his dream to meet Crosby there, isn't it? :-)

Another strange thing is that NHL's contract with NBC/Versus will expire the same year as Ovechkin's 13-year contract with Capitals.

All he needs now is to pass NY Rangers in the first round. A journey of thousand miles starts with this year playoffs, or something like that. :-)

Lost in transition?

First playoffs loss to NY Rangers and here we go, we've got a first critical revision of Bruce Boudreau's defensive system. It is a very good read, by the way, and unlike most of the articles it gives us something to talk about and argue. I wish I could discover this blog earlier.

By Steven Ovadia, "Puck Update", Apr. 18, 2011, "Washington Capitals Need Ovechkin to Find Offense in Transition":

Much has been made of Washington Capitals coach Bruce Boudreau’s sudden conversion into the Church of Defensive Hockey.

When the Capitals struggled during the regular season, Boudreau moved the team into a more defensive system and found consistency and success. And Boudreau hasn’t looked back, maintaining a defensive posture into the playoffs.

So far it’s paid off, as Washington is up two games to one over the New York Rangers. But is Boudreau’s new defensive system sustainable?

So let's follow the article and discuss.
  • Playing Boudreau’s system, Ovechkin has looked like a solid two-way player, but not an NHL superstar. It’s because Boudreau’s defensive system is overly simply and without nuance.

Ovechkin is not the same as he used to be, but it is not because of Boudreau's system. It is clear now that some big mistakes were made by Alex Ovechkin in pre-season. He lost his personal trainer who used to follow him an entire season and throughout playoffs, and he didn't get an adequate replacement.

You can say, what about Caps fitness trainer? I don't want to be negative, but the fact is that a lot of Caps players have struggled with injuries, too many got injured. Semyon Varlamov came to DC in early August to work with him and had the worst season injury-wise. That is not very encouraging.

Now back to Ovi. For the most part Alex looks like a fish out of the water, he is even using oxygen. He does not look like a guy he used to be, a guy who could stay on ice forever. Why is he still a superstar? Because superstars can adjust and this is what Ovi does. He now scores "ugly goals", he is more discipline on line changes because he knows his limitations and this is what great players do, they adjust.

Can Alex Ovechkin get in a better shape even after his down the drain pre-season training? Yes, he can and he will, but first the team needs to pass through the first round.

As of defensive system, I am not an expert, but isn't it supposed to be simple? Yes, like we said before, Boudreau has never coached a trap team; he never played a trap himself as a player. So yeah, these are some uncharted waters for our Coach.
  • What’s the point of having one of the NHL’s best players if you’re not going to give him opportunities to showcase his talent? Why play things so safe that Ovechkin’s talent is completely obviated?
  • The answer is simple, to win the Stanley Cup. But in a regular season I would let players to showcase their talent. Like we said before, let them play some games at home run 'n' gun style and lock it when on the road. This is, by the way, what great Victor Tikhonov did with CSKA and Russian national team.
  • Boudreau’s defensive system has no transition component. When opponents turnover the puck, play stops while the puck is protected and everyone re-sets. In essence, every time the Capitals have a chance to create an odd-man rush, they give their opponent time to get back.

Yes, quick transition is the key nowadays because virtually every serious Stanley Cup contender plays some kind of trap. Playing trap means scoring on a counter attack, on a quick transition. Are Caps really bad in that category? No, don't think so. And a good example was playing against Penguins in the Winter classic game. That was after Caps have adopted a new system. Pens are one of the best quick transition teams in the league and I was really impressed how Caps actually beat them in that category. So I disagree, when Caps are on the roll, they are second to none in transition from defense to offense.

NJ Devils at their prime scored a ton of goals where just one forward would have an odd-man rush and score on a slapshot crossing the blue line. This is where the fast accelerating skaters should play a bigger role, players like Marcus Johansson or Alex Ovechkin. Use their fast accelerating abilities, let them stay up close to a blue line to create odd-man rushes. There's always a room for improvement that why we all should agree on the next statement.
  • If Boudreau wants his Capitals to succeed in the playoffs, he needs to take his coaching to a higher level.
No argument here, it starts with the Coach. The game was lost to Rangers because players took undisciplined penalties, because Rangers were more desperate. In these situations coaching stuff didn't make it clear to players, didn't motivate them enough, or the players didn't listen, which is the same.

Now there's plenty of time to change all that before Wednesday, but Caps can't afford to lose another game as a learning experience. They've had it last year when the team lead the series 3:1 and was eliminated.

History teaches us that it teaches us nothing. We all hope it won’t be the case this year.

Game 4 is a "must win" for Caps, make no mistake about it.

Ovechkin talks to the media after 2-3 loss to Rangers

Boudreau of last year: "We can be done by Wednesday of next week".

A year has passed and the song remains the same, "we can be done by Wednesday of next week".

What difference one year has made?

First of all and the most important, Caps are finally playing trap, which is essential in playoffs and that what the whole Capitals community, starting from fans to team owner Ted Leonsis wanted.

Second, GMGM did an excellent job of bringing veterans for playoffs run, again, as we all know, veterans win the Cup. Jason Arnott maybe the final piece of a puzzle for Caps, to me, he brings the very important thing for younger players, confidence. From Mike Wise TWP article:

“You don’t have many chances to win [the Stanley Cup]. When you have a special team like this, you want to make sure you give yourself every chance.”

On how he is helping Ovi to captain the team:
"With Ovi, I know he is the leader of this team and the team runs when he goes. How he’s thinking, what he feels, is important. He doesn’t always know how to talk to the team about how he feels because of his English, but if I can draw that from him, it’s that much easier to understand."

Speaking of veterans, Caps team can be categorized as a veteran team now. No pain, no gain, right? They've learned a whole lot and they know how desperate they must be to advance. One week and you're out, leading series 3:1 and still losing it in the first round. Nothing is guaranteed, you must work on every shift and the whole game in order to win.

And third, I hope they would be more respectful to the opponents, one lil' phrase can ignite the opposing team and change the momentum. Do you remember last year Boudreau's "Tomas who? Jagr?" in response to Tomas Plekanec's claim that Canadiens had better goaltending? Comes next game and Plekanec scores an overtime winner.

How about Ovi's remark on Halak:
I watched the replay when Fehr scored the goal and his arm was shaking when he drink water. So he's nervous. He knows the pressure on him and it's a good sign for us.

And that was it, Halak won the series.

Unlike Halak, Henrik Lundqvist is solvable. He can stand on his head, but he has lost to Caps before. Personally I categorize this by measuring it against Ovi's shots, especially wrist shots. I know it's not scientific, but if the goalie stops vintage Ovechkin shots, for instance, wrist shots fired from behind d-man, the ones that Ovi usually puts in the net, then the goalie is "hot" and we know how much trouble it creates for Caps. Henrik can do it, but not very consistently.

But... this year Caps have their secret weapon, Matt Hendricks...
By Mike Vogel, Feb. 5, 2011, Dump'n'Chase:
At the other end of the ice, Caps winger Matt Hendricks took it upon himself to get under the skin of Lightning goalie Dwayne Roloson, who had blanked the Caps in each of his two previous starts against Washington. Less than a minute after Hendricks took a run at Roloson, the Caps solved the veteran goalie and stopped his personal shutout streak against Washington at 135 minutes and 42 seconds.

So let the series begin, and we all hope that by Wednesday of next week Caps will still be in playoffs. Ovi, Backstrom, Semin just started to warm up before the season ended, and passing through the first round would do just that, it will make them hot.

By Stuart Weinberg, The Wall Street Journal, Apr. 13, 2011, "The Blueprint for Stopping Ovechkin":
Capitals coach Bruce Boudreau said his team hasn't devised a master plan to jumpstart Ovechkin. "I mean we will not dissect frame by frame where Alex has to go," he said. "We say, 'Alex, the guy is putting back pressure on you. They're not allowing you the middle of the ice. You've got to find something different to do."

Boudreau also isn't worried about his team's captain. "He's still the same beast," he said. "He still hits. He still shoots."

All you need now is to win 4 games :-) and then... the sky is the limit... (Semin scores 2 in the finals, Ovi wins Conn Smythe trophy, am I dreaming? Yes, I am... :-)

Go, Ovi, go Caps!

Joe Beninati (on "what people ask you when you go out?"):

One weekend of people's superstar

A lot had happened last weekend and after while I was driving from the West Coast back home. Like anybody else I read Ovi's tweets and watched YouTube videos on my Android phone, but posting from the phone is not that easy or fun.

Now I am back and doing my job as a court stenographer, I'll start with Ovi's tweets...

  • Apr 1, 2011 ovi8: With the First Lady! http://yfrog.com/h2yz4ndj

How did it happen? Dan Steinberg asked Ovi...
Me and [Jason] Arnott go to restaurant and she was there,” Ovechkin explained. “So I asked the manager can we take a picture with her. It was kind of cool, and she was very nice. Like, it’s unbelievable.”
    and then his teammates...
“That’s just part of the way he is,” Matt Bradley said. “He’s just a happy-go-lucky guy, and he treats everyone the same, and that’s what makes him the kind of person he is .”

But he didn't ask Jason Arnott, :) Sean Fitz-Gerald did...
“I went up to say, ‘Table for four,’ and this gentleman came over and grabbed me by the shoulder and said, ‘Step back,’” Arnott said. “He didn’t say, ‘Excuse me.’ Just, ‘Step back.’ I was like, ‘What?’ ”

Arnott, a 6-foot-5, 220-pound forward with the Washington Capitals, is rarely shoved in public. His wife was the first to notice the man’s earpiece, and since they were eating in Washington, the couple expected to see a senator sweeping in behind the bodyguards.

“Then she walked in with a bunch of her friends,” Arnott said, still in awe. “And my wife and I were like, ‘That’s Michelle Obama.’ ”

    This quote is precious :)
“We talked a little bit about the Capitals,” Arnott said. “We were trying to get her to come to a game. And she said she and her husband were trying to get to a game. Ovie’s like, ‘We can get you tickets if you want to come.’

    And then Mike Knuble says:
“I think he enjoys it all, and he takes it all in, you know? He feeds off it. He’s a regular guy. He’s out there. People know where he lives, know his schedule and know where he parks. He’s kind of like the people’s superstar.”

Another GWG for Ovi, he leads the NHL in that category.

  • Apr 3, 2011 ovi8: At lil wayne concert! Super!!!! Drake here too!so sick!!!!
Ovi with Drake and Lil' Wayne

ovi8: With all my boys! Nicklas Backstrom, Marcus Johansson, Mike Green, John Carlson, Ovi with Drake and Lil' Wayne

Whew, That was intense :)

Then there was another Ovi's day in the office in Toronto. Ovi scores his 300th goal, the fastest Russian to reach 300 goal mark behind Wayne Gretzky, Mario Lemieux, Brett Hull, Mike Bossy, Jari Kurri and Teemu Selanne.

Bradley, Erskine, Knuble, Neuvirth and Ovechkin speak following the win against Toronto

Congrats to Ovi and hopefully this is the year for Ovechkin and Caps.

The playoffs will start next week and one could wish Caps won't play against the team with "hot goalie". Who can it be, who can become a show stopper? Let's see... Henrik Lundqvist, Ryan Miller, Dwayne Roloson, actually a big chance. Oh, well... On a forth year of playoffs, being wiser and more experienced, you gotta solve it... That's the hope. :)
