Ovechkin is the best advertising engine for other Russians (update)

Semyon Varlamov's agent Vyacheslav Makhrensky explained why the choice was made in favor of the SKA, and talked about how much his client would receive in St Petersburg club.
Sportbox.ru, June 30, 2011:

I talked to the president of the "Locomotive" Yuri Yakovlev and asked him to make an offer Varlamov to continue his career. But we never received a formal proposal from the "Locomotive". Later we got from SKA.

Why you chose SKA?
Because we received an offer from them.

Were there others?
At least nobody else contacted me.

There are reports that by very conservative estimates Varlamov's salary will be eight times more than what Capitals offered him. Is this true?
Yes, it is. The financial terms offered by the SKA are better than those with the Washington.

Sportbox.ru: Note that in Washington Varlamov earned $822,000 a year.

That's why other NHL teams reluctant to draft Russians. With Ovechkin it is even more risky because any Russians who play for Washington Capitals with Ovi are receiving immediate attention from Russian media and KHL. Washington Capitals games are covered by Russian TV more than any other NHL club. Ovechkin serves as the best advertising engine for other Russians in KHL market.

Update:
Semyon Varlamov, whose rights in Russia belong to Yaroslavl "Locomotive", is waiting for a decision about his contract with SKA St. Petersburg. His agent Vyacheslav Makhrensky told to Sport-Express:
Semyon will be in North America until the situation will be resolved. If SKA will be able to sign him, he will arrive in St. Petersburg to the team's pre-season training on July 20th. In other case he will be preparing for the season in America.
Source: Sport-Express.ru

Wait, what if SKA won't be able to get him? Varlamov doesn't want to play for Locomotive, will he sign with Capitals then?

Clear as mud. :-)

Just to remind, Locomotive is ready to offer Semyon $2 mil and SKA is offering $4 mil (no tax).

A bombshell from Varlamov's agent

Semyon Varlamov's agent Vyacheslav Makhrensky Varlamov commented about Varlamov's choice of KHL and also said that Varlamov received improper medical treatment from Washington Capitals medical staff.

Pavel Lysenkov, SovSport.ru, June 30, 2011:

What is Semyon looking for?
He has a contract offer from the Washington and from Russia. As of today Varlamov has chosen KHL.

Where is Semyon now?
He flew to US on Wednesday.

You mean, he agreed to the NHL's contract offer?
No, Semyon wants to work with a [fitness] coach from Hershey who normally trains him in the offseason. This specialist also works for the NFL. He is supposed to improve Varlamov fitness off-ice and in the gym. And when Semyon will return, I think it will be in the mid-July, he will start on-ice training with the goalie coach Jussi Parkkila, who has been training him for the last 4 years.

There was a stereotype that Varlamov is injury prone. But his father said it was because he received improper medical treatment from Washington Capitals medical staff.
He is in a good shape! When Semyon returned to Russia after the season, we conducted a thorough medical examination. We did not find any scars in those places where there previously were groin injuries. In fact the treatment by Capitals medical staff is problematic. The doctors in Russia are better. The Washington Capitals doctor would say, "He is alright, he can play.", but Semyon felt that he still had a sore knee. So he goes out and play and again gets injured. And the injury was not even too serious, but he couldn't continue to play.

Where there a cases when Washington kept healthy Varlamov on the bench?
It is understandable why it was done. Capitals were preparing for a new contract talks. But they didn't expect that Semyon could choose to go to Russia. The Washington's management thought that they were in control of the situation. But it turned out that they were not.

Malkin's Q&A

Evgeny Malkin answers questions to the readers of Sports.ru...

The Q&A is very long and very interesting, here are some excerpts...
Sports.ru, June 27, 2011:

How old were you when you first tried [to smoke] a cigarette?
I've never smoked, honestly. I smoked hookahs, cigars a couple times, but never tried a cigarette. Now in general the trend is that more women are smoking, not men. If I meet a girl, one of the first conditions, perhaps, not very serious, so she doesn't smoke. I think when a girl smokes, it looks ugly just in general.

What do you expect from [new coach of team Russia] Bilyaletdinov?
You can't say, here he is, now we are going to win everything. I would expect from him, as from a good professional, an understanding. I wish that he would do his job professionally and only the best hockey players would play for the national team.

Tell us about HBO's «24/7: the road to the Winter Classic."
At first it was unusual, because when you go into the dressing room or to the hotel, there were cameras everywhere. Not too many, 3-4 cameras, but the Americans know how to shoot. The first few days it was uncomfortable, and then you get used to and do not pay attention.

How long it took you to get used to the famous gentleman in suits, Don Cherry?
I don't know him personally and never met him. I've seen him on TV occasionally, funny, like when Don Cherry criticizes the Russians, one of whom is Ovechkin. Perhaps he does not like Russians, always defends his people. But this is his show, Don Cherry is popular in Canada as a showman. As a hockey analyst, I don't think he is as strong as others, he simply advertised himself with his jackets, candid interviews. Can I see myself in one of his jacket? Nooo, I can not.

Can you name the most beautiful goal in someone else's performance?
This got to be Ovechkin's goal to Phoenix when he falls. Nobody will be able repeat it in the near future. Everything came together as he fell, and the puck was on the hook, the other player wouldn't even try, but Sasha did, and succeeded. I've never seen more beautiful goal.

Have you seen an interview with Alexander Semin, which he gave to American journalists six years after his arrival to Washington? Were there situations when you wanted to answer the same?
(Malkin watches the video, laughing out loud and even going down under the table. [In other words, 'rolling on the floor laughing out loud'.])
Of course, it happens. When you get such a question, you are standing there and everybody is waiting on your quick response. You start to twitch a little, pick up words. The same probably happened with Sasha. But it's fun.
[Here's what happened...
Mike Vogel: What would it mean to you to win the Stanley Cup with this team?
Semin: Exactly with this team? (pause) I don't even know... (pause) How to explain them... To say that... [To interpreter:] Say something for me... Shit... How the fuck do I know... (pause) I think Stanley Cup is Stanley Cup, the reason why we are playing.. I came to this team and I want to stay with this team... -tj]

Ovechkin said about his home in Washington, DC, "you are resting at night and then the doorbell rings; the boy in the Capitals jersey asks for an autograph." Have you faced such problems?
Ovechkin told me this story, that's why he wants to sell his house. I am lucky that I live in a closed private area, 20 minutes from downtown. His house, as I understand it, is in the city. So I haven't had such problems and I hope I won't.

Do you have a pet?
In America I have a cat, and in Russia I have a dog for the last five years. The cat appeared from the street, my girlfriend saw an abandon kitten in the doorway. The usual non-pedigree cat.

What are you surprised the most when you return to Russia?
I don't know if others noticed it, but here the drivers atarted to treat each other better, at least I thought so. You leave from the parking lot, they'll let you in, help you. It is a surprise for me. When I myself was driving four years ago, everything was different: shooting, swearing. It is good that now is different.

Who are the best players and goalkeeper in hockey today?
The best goalkeeper would be Tim Thomas, he had a fantastic season. On defense, Lidstrom and Chara. Niklas, what can you say, won "Norris Trophy" for the 7th time. Chara has improved in recent years, he can play 30 minutes and won't get tired. And in the offense: Ovechkin, Crosby and Datsyuk. Pasha and Sydney are center-forwards, but someone on this occasion, I think, can take place on the wing.

Ovechkin and undocumented Ghera

Rumor is Donald Trump has repeatedly asked Ovi about Ghera's birth certificate. :-)

Burscheid is 19 miles (24 mins) away from Cologne

By Von Jürgen Heimann, Westdeutsche Zeitung, May 6, 2011, "Top Russian hockey player has a guard dog from Burscheid"

The Roscheck family, a dog breeder from Burscheid, has been trying for months to contact the NHL star who doesn't have the papers for his pet yet.

When Hannelies Roscheck opened the sports section of the Bergischen Volksboten on Wednesday [Wednesday, May 4, 2011, Capitals - Lightning, game 4 -tj], she found a new chance to reach for the Russian hockey superstar Alexander Ovechkin through our IIHF World Championship correspondent in Bratislava. Within half an hour the editorial department in Burscheid was in contact with their reporter in Slovakia, but to no avail; Ovechkin indeed was a member of Russian national team, but 25-year-old was still in US playing for NHL's Washington Capitals [in playoffs].

In no case Hannelies Roscheck is a crazy hockey fan who wants an autograph sign at any cost. It was rather about signing the papers for German shepherd called "Qualle" [German for "Jelly Fish"]. She was born with six other puppies on January 1st, 2010, in Burscheid, which was witnessed by Margit van Kölnerin Dorssen, "the world-renowned breeder," said Hannelies Roscheck.

Super athlete Ovechkin learned about her when he played at the IIHF World Cup for the Russians at the Lanxess Arena [May 2010]. But first time visiting her in Cologne he didn't find the dog he was looking for. Everything changed when van Dorssen brought Qualle to the cathedral city [Cologne].

Roscheck remembered how Qualle rummaged through the belongings of the Russians right away and found a pack of cigarettes. That impressed the new owner. "She is searching for drugs," said the athlete and bought the dog. "He said, he wanted her to guard his property in Russia".

The interpreter and Ovechkin's friends are said to have asked for the dog's papers right away, but to transfer the papers to new owner in the books of the "German Shepherds association" in Augsburg takes some time. And up to today Hannelies Roscheck does not have the superstar's address, which is necessary to mail the papers.

Inquiries to the Washington Capitals and the interpreter remained unanswered so far. According to the rules he owns the dog only after he receives the papers. Qualle, who was given a new name on a day she was bought, still is a "Burscheiderin" [inhabitant of Burscheid] in the documents.

Many thanks to our reader Anja for the link and translation.

AO in pretty good mood

Alex sits down with Pavel Lysenkov and talks (excerpt):

How do you spend your summer vacation? What did you do after the [IIHF] World Cup?
It's only a month so far. I'm just resting. Now I plan to stay in Moscow. Later I'll go to France for five days with Ilya Nikulin.

And what about Turkey, your favorite vacation place?
I already was there, stayed for five days. It was a quiet hotel, no disco. I was swimming and sleeping.

When will you start training?
Closer to August. Last year I trained with Ilya Kovalchuk. And now I don't know who I will train with. There were some plans, but everything has already changed. I understand how important it is to build the foundation in the off-season. But this summer I might change my training system.

What do you feel about so many injuries in the NHL? Crosby and many other stars got injured. Vancouver's Raymond received vertebrae compression fracture in the Stanley Cup finals.
It's hockey, unpredictable game. Relax for a second and injury will find you. It's like the [Soviet] pioneers would say, "Be ready!", [answer] "Born ready!" [Similar to boyscouts' "Be prepared!" -tj]

Semyon Varlamov is now without a contract. What should he do, stay in the NHL with a small salary or return to Russia?
Varlamov is already an experienced player. He knows what is what. Maybe Semyon just makes a calculated pause in negotiations. God help him to remain in Washington. Everyone loves and respects him.

Are you sorry that Capitals won't visit Russia?
Very much! I have already phoned to all the relatives and friends, said that in the fall you would see me playing in Russia. Was hoping that the guys from Washington would see Moscow. But the two leagues couldn't agree on some small details. It's a shame ...

Any news that in the last few days shocked you?
I try to live quiet and peaceful life. I don't watch news. I just relax and go out with guys and try to forget about everything. Went to a movie [premiere] lately, the movie "All Inclusive". It was very funny.

What can surprise you?
Today I was really surprised by your questions. And recently I was surprised in Chelyabinsk when I visited it. I discovered a new world!

this is your field reporter Emily.

Ovi's ex

Turned out Ovi's new girlfriend, the one she was at the movie, is his ex. Can you believe this is her? She looks a whole lot hotter now.

June 2011:

Before the NHL:

Express Gazette, Nov. 2005:

"Sasha started writing me again, this time from Washington," has taken us aback Anna Samsonova, who we met before the show of dance ensemble "Dynamite" a few days ago. "Sasha told me that he had already bought a house in Washington and a car. He was proud that he everything was going well and he got everything..."

Does he want you back?
We are not discussing each other's personal life in principle. I talk to Sasha just about my job, about my dance ensemble. After all, I am a professional dancer, interned for two years in Switzerland. I could stay there, but I missed Moscow. I came back, settled at the "Dynamite" and this is how we met.

Our group performs in the intervals during hockey, basketball and volleyball games of Dynamo club.

And Sasha saw my picture on the wall at the arena and then persuaded HR people to give him my phone number. Why do we parted? Maybe it was jealousy, maybe something else. Cuba is a hot country, the ocean, the emotions fly... It takes time for all to be subsided. And then, perhaps, our love will erupt with renewed vigor. Let's wait and see.

And what you friends from the dance ensemble say?
They say, "If it is destined to, so be it..." By the way, I remained in good terms with Sasha's mother. And perhaps, if Sasha would call me to go to DC, I probably would go..."
Source: http://eg.ru/daily/adv/7344/

Leaving to the 2005 IIHF World championship in Vienna:
The hockey players of the national team begrudgingly looked how a beauty in a short skirt was gently kissing goodbye to their teammmate. In the summer the young couple went on vacation, first to Cyprus, and then to Cuba...

Ovi left Anna for Veronika

Express Gazette, June 21, 2011:
When she read about the new Ovechkin's girlfriends, it was painful. She knew that all the celebrities are basically the same: today it is one girl, and tomorrow thre's another. She also understands that in the United States Ovechkin can find a dozen mistresses if he wants to. So she decided, if he didn't invite her to go with him to Washington, it is not destined.

Time has passed. Suddenly Sasha wrote her an email. He said he soon would come to Moscow and would like to see her. It was followed by a second email, third, fourth ... They started to write each other. Sasha was describing his life in Washington, and once wrote to Anna that he missed her and remembered everything that was between them.

Last summer they met in Moscow. They walked the city at night, had fun, were laughing. A few days later Ovechkin invited Anna for the dinner at his home. His mother, Tatiana, had made a pirog with the apples (apple pie -tj) and cooked dinner with French meat recipe. And Sasha's father pulled out from his silos a bottle of collectible red wine. In short, the truce held.

"Don't think that I'm a womanizer," said to Anna Ovechkin. "Half of what they write about me is nonsense. I'm feel good with you. And I no longer need anybody else.

Today, one year later, Anna and Sasha are together again. Ovechkin wants to take a girl to America, but she has to quit her job.
"Can you sacrifice something for me?"asked her Alex smiling.

"I'll think about it," coyly replied Anna.

Ovechkin's friends think that the case moves towards the wedding. Sasha's parents, to our knowledge, endorse the choice of their son.
Source: http://eg.ru/daily/sports/26155/

hmmm... So last year it was Lera and Anna... Or Anna and Lera... This year it is Anna and Lera (but not the one from last year, this is the one I called Ovi's new personal trainer :-)

One thing is clear, Anna and Ovi are good friends, and I think they are just good friends.

Ovechkin at Colonna restaurant in Moscow.

Alright, I know, these are old news, but YouTube video is new.

Can elite athlete smoke hookah or tobacco? Yes, there are examples of such people, but it is rare. And Ovi said he would never advertise cigarettes. He knows it is bad. Oh well...

ESPN interview with Mario Lemieux:
Dan Patrick: In Gretzky's book, he said there was one piece of advice he had for you -- quit smoking.
Mario Lemieux: Oh, I did stop smoking a long time ago.
Oh, OK.
That was my first couple years in the league where, you know, I was smoking quite a bit, probably two packs a day.
How did that happen? How did that start? Were you trying to act tough?
No, not really. I think people in Montreal smoke a lot, and I used to smoke when I was 17-18, and just picked it up when I was playing juniors. But I think I stopped when I was 22, which was a big decision in my life.

Update:
To be fair Evgeny Malkin smokes hookah too. Here's an excerpt from his recent interview at Sports.ru:

How old were you when you first tried a cigarette?
I've never smoked, honestly. I smoked hookahs, cigars a couple times, but never tried a cigarette. Now in general the trend is that more women are smoking, not men. If I meet a girl, one of the first conditions, perhaps, not very serious, so she doesn't smoke. I think when a girl smokes, it looks ugly just in general.
So... smoking hookah is not smoking? ...hmmm...

Here is the list of famous people who use snus. Ovi is included.

Watch Ovi, he has something in his mouth. Our Swedish reader commented that Ovi got snus from Marcus Johansson...

The rumor is 50% of Swedish hockey players use snus.

It is actually healthier to use snus than to smoke hookah. Where is Marcus Johansson when you need him? :-)

appreciated the fitness center at the hotel complex, which, by the way, received the award last year as "The Best Fitness Center of the Year" by the Luxury Awards magazine.

The hockey player tasted restaurant's cuisine of the hotel complex, admitted that he never had a better lamb shish kebab and lula kebab and praised the level of service at "Beryozka".

Ovechkin would certainly stay longer in the picturesque village, far from the hustle and bustle of the industrial city, but things do not wait. And on Tuesday, June 7 the staff of "Beryozka" bid farewell to Alexander, hoping for a second meeting.

A portrait of the famous hockey player now adorns a number of photographs of honorary guests of the hotel complex.

Riots in Vancouver

The photo show from the Washington Post.

From RT:

Angry, drunken revellers ran wild on Wednesday night after the Vancouver Canucks' 4-0 loss to Boston in Game 7 of the Stanley Cup finals, setting cars and garbage cans ablaze, smashing windows, showering giant TV screens with beer bottles and dancing atop overturned vehicles. Later, looters smashed windows and ran inside department stores. There were no immediate indications of injuries, although images were shown on television of at least one woman mopping blood from her forehead. Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson praised the police and firefighters and asked people to stay away from the central downtown area. Tear gas mingled with the stench of acrid smoke and stale beer as riot police, truncheons drawn, moved in to quell the violence, pushing crowds away from the burning cars. Later, police cars also were set on fire.

I have nothing against Vancouver Canucks, I am just happy for Boston Bruins and my favorite (after Ovi) NHL player Zdeno Chara. He is the second European Captain after Niklas Lidstrom to win the Stanley Cup. So much reward for the last year humiliation, leading series 3-1, leading game 7 3-0 and being eliminated. "Success is how high you bounce when you hit the bottom." said General George S. Patton and here is the hope to the Washington Capitals to follow Boston Bruins example.

Let Alex Ovechkin be the third European Captain to win the Stanley Cup!

DC Sports Bog:
Before Game 7 ended the NHL season, Bruce Boudreau talked to WTOP’s Jonathan Warner about the final game of the hockey season.

When asked whether the Bruins’ rebounding from 2010 playoff heartbreak could become a rallying cry for the Caps.

“Our cries, we’ve got a lot to pull from as far as next year goes,” the coach said. “We’ll find some really good ways to motivate them. But I’m sure every player’s watching the playoffs now and we’re all kicking ourselves that we’re not there, because we believe that we’re close to being there.”

Ovechkin talks about the Olympics

Pavel Lysenkov of Sovetsky Sport talks with Ovechkin about the Sochi-2014 Olympics (June 16, 2011):

We have two and a half years before Sochi-2014. Are we ready for the Olympics?
Not yet. We must look to the Canadians, who diligently prepared for Vancouver. They not just made the best possible roster, but also specifically scouted every opponent. All NHL players, and all KHL players who joined Russia's national team! Steve Yzerman, the General manager of Canada, watched personally the play of many Russians. He scouted us inside out.

Maybe we should switch to the Canadian system? The general manager is responsible for everything, under him all the coaches, players.
I don't know about the system, but I do not see anything wrong if we could copy Canadians. We should have a coach that is responsible for video clips, we need a clear plan for every game. "Run-and-gun, we'll see you at the goals?" This tactic won't work in in Sochi.

Why we're not bringing younger players to the team? Why we don't have our own Stamkoses?
If there weren't talented guys we would not have won the Juniors World Cup.

Why do the juniors develop poorly?
Because they are not trusted. It is easier for a Russian club to sign NHL player than to raise your own young star. Why there are so few 2011 world champions playing in KHL? That's something to think about. The juniors needs to be given a chance. When I was playing in Russia, they always were giving me ice time to play. I played for a third or fourth line, had 10-12 minutes per game. That was enough to gain experience and to become a good hockey player.

Is it good or bad that fewer Russians play in the NHL?
I understand why the guys from overseas come to Russia. This is a financial issue. But I don't think that you can really compete with the NHL on the quality of the game at the NHL level. Is this why the national team is weaker? You decide.

Recently you flew to Chelyabinsk for Yevgeny Kuznetsov wedding...
Yes, Kuzya invited me. He is a nice guy! I met his wife, their parents. They are very nice people. I came for two days and stayed for four. I actually have quite a lot of friends there. For example, Sanya Budkin, who played for Dynamo.
I even made friends with riot police and the local sheriff! I was greeted with enthusiasm in Chelyabinsk. I really liked it there.

Kuznetsov decided to play another year with "Tractor", although he was chosen on a draft by Washington. Have you talked to him about the NHL?
I just said, "Kuzya, if you want to grow as a hockey player, it is better to go overseas."

But he is only 19! I remember how people said about Ovechkin, it is good that he went to the NHL at age 20, when he matured.
I had a completely different situation. There was the NHL lockout. And I was an older player, they could not choose me at 2003 NHL Draft. I don't know how my fate would be if I would go overseas for a year or two earlier. Maybe I could actually gain something.

Should the Head coach of team Russia be devoted to national team only and often visit the NHL? Or by a common sense it is clear that Ovechkin and Semin should be in the Olympics.
After the last World Championships I was told that I was not needed in a team.

Who said that?
Everyone including the journalists.

Was it in the mixed zone?
No one will say In the face, right? But it was unpleasant to hear such talk behind my back.

My question was about something else.
Of course, the coach must often fly over the pond. To scout his own players as well as his rivals. He needs to work on specific line combination, special teams and to look for tactical schemes. We don't have not enough time to be ready for Olympics. And in Sochi we need to shoot like from the cannon. The cannon ball should hit the target and knock off everything on it's way. We want to take the gold, do we?

How can you work on a special teams if the players arrive to the team two days before the tournament? By the way, our PP failed in Bratislava. It did not work at all.
The team has skilled players who know how to play. But we need to use a video to study how the opponent plays. Do they play active or passive? Based on that we need to decide who we'll put in what position. The opponent plays diamond formation? All right. And we should play accordingly. Another combination? We could put a center forward there (Ovechkin draws diagrams on a napkin).
And what we did? Let's see... We played PP with our NHL club this way. Let's do the same thing in the national team. And then we begin to roll the garbage. The puck goes down, the puck goes up... We wait hoping it will fly into the net. Two minutes passed, but we did not score.

There are two approaches in hockey. The first one is "we are strong, we'll play our game with our tactics. The second one, we are strong, but we will study the opponent and use their weaknesses.
I am for the second approach, and I am telling you that this was something that team Russia was lacking.

Are there the chances that the NHL will let the players to go to the Olympics?
I don't know. But I am not giving up on what I said before. I think that all Russian players from the NHL will come to Sochi.

Will they run away, or what?
They will arrange it with their clubs.

Have you talk about this with the owner of the Washington Capitals Ted Leonsis?
It is too early. I don't want to scare him (laughs)
