Caps 3, Pens 4 OT. 1/22/12

When I've heard that Mojo was not playing, the first thought was, they were going to lose. Yes, Caps lost, but I really like how they were able to change the game falling behind 0-2. Caps showed a character. And it started with Ovi and a big hit on Michalek in the second period and "when Ovi's going, the team is going," said Dale Hunter after the game. Ovi finished the game with 1 goal, 2 assists and +3.

Caps Postgame Locker Room: Caps players Alex Ovechkin, Michal Neuvirth, Dennis Wideman, and Mathieu Perreault address the media after a 4-3 loss.

Ovechkin's stats after the 1st:

Total ice time 06:32, 9 shifts, average 00:43, PP 00:12, even 06:20, 1 attempt blocked, 1 hit, 1 giveaway

After 2nd:
2 assists, +2, total ice time 12:20, 14 shifts, average 00:52, PP 03:39, even 08:41, 1 shot on goal, 2 attempts blocked, 1 missed, 2 hits, 1 giveaway

Final:
1 goal, 2 assists, +3, total ice time 20:35, 23 shifts, average 00:53, PP 05:05, even 15:30, 2 shots on goal, 4 attempts blocked, 2 missed, 2 hits, 2 giveaway

Ovi scores his 20th goal of the season on the perfect pass from Semin.

Ovi's hit on Michalek started Caps comeback.

Sports.ru reports this is the first time in this season that Ovi got 3 points in one game. Last time it was on April 6, 2011 against Florida (5:2).

Watch Michalek's elbow in the back of Hendricks head and driving it into the boards.

Kindsa happy about the offense, even though it was still under 30 shots like im used to seeing. Ovi only got 2 shhots when he used to get 5+. The other playres need to step up like ovie and semin did tonight and we might see an improvement.......get better offense!!!

Yes, I also was happy to see a return of the Caps offense. No ugly 3-0 shutout loss like 2 of the past 3 other road games. But since it was the Pens as opponent, it makes sense that the Caps would get up for the game. Good to see them rally from a deficit. But give the Pens credit too, most especially Malkin, who seems to be carrying the team on his back in Crosby's absence. If the Caps face the Pens in the playoffs...watch out, could be one of the best postseason matchups.

BTW, I just noticed Ovie's latest tweet. His brother Mikhail was in Carolina Friday night. Nice to see Ovie making time for family visits at Caps games.

Update: I just saw on NHL Network Ovie and Michalek will have separate disciplinary hearings on Monday related to their hits during the game.

Now it's time to wait in dread for the results of Ovi's hearing. So, if the "worst" happens and Ovi is suspended, the Caps face the high flying Bruins with no Ovi, no Backstrom, and no Green. Will Johansson be well enough to play by then?

Ugh, possibly no Ovi, no Mike, no Nicky....go Sasha I guess! I actually think Marcus might have some sort of lower body injury from that hit he took. He said he was fine to Whyno but he didn't play well his last game. Maybe they are sitting him because of it and that's the mysterious illness. Which really sucks. Never thought I'd be glad for Matty P.
