Kolzig's comments on Ovechkin's slump

Kolzig's comments on Ovechkin and his slump. Transcript via Capitals Insider:

I think a lot is frustraton. Obviously he’s not scoring at the clip he’s accustomed to. Part of that is not having Nicky Backstrom in the lineup. Alex — and I think I’m seeing it a little more with Dale behind the bench – Alex was getting away from playing the hard, no-nonsense, honest type of hockey, exuberant hockey that he displayed the first three years that he was in the league.

I think that’s what endeared him to everybody. Then all of a sudden he was the same Alex, he was celebrating certain ways and what endeared him to everybody now made him look like a villain.

So, I think part of it is he’s feeling a little not as loved as he used to be, he brings that on himself sometimes. But I think obviously missing Nicky, it hurts. Teams have kind of got a handle on him, maybe how to close the gap on him and not allow him to score those fantastic one-on-one goals that he used to score.

For Alex, it’s a work ethic. He just has to get back to being the way he was in his younger days and maybe not get wrapped up too much in the rock star status that comes with being Alex Ovechkin.

Close to home? What do you think?

In order to be successful at anything in life, you have to learn to accept criticism and find a way to make yourself better.

Olie isn't against Ovie at all so anybody who criticizes you who's on your side is only trying to help you.

He is playing more of a team game than a points game. Points arent as importantant anymore. He is still an amazing player who controls the play every shift. Since being named captain he has been leading the team in less of a points role and less of a scorer role.

I wasn't talking about the points. He'd be more of a leader to his team if he gave his best effort every time he goes out there. If he shows up to the game looking defeated, so will the rest of the team. I understand that there are things that he can't control. But that doesn't mean he shouldn't give it all he has.

One thing I agree with is that ovie looks disinterested in most the games he played in this season, and the games he is interested in, he is a definite force out there. It just seems being captain, numerous endorsements "Nike, Gillette" seems to be occupying his energy. He needs to go back to the scruff, play hard, and most important have FUN again

@Anonymous:
Again, he does the endorsement during summer time. I don't see how that can affect his game.

The C put a lot of pressure on him and that's the reason why a lot of fans want it to be remove of his jersey so he can play freely again. But that can also be a bad idea. We don't how he is going to react. If he is going to get better or worse and feel disappointed.

Also, I don't understand why everyone expect too much from the captain?!

You can't say the team is going to lose because the captain is not interested in the game.

The coach tells you what to do and you do it! It doesn't matter if the captain feels likely to play or not you do what you are being told to do!

If everything actually goes around Ovi, then that means we have a bunch of sissies in this team!

Now, in defense of Ovechkin I think he is the one who shows more desire than anyone in this team. He looked disinterested when BB started to fail but he got back on track until Hunter decided to make some dumb changes.

Finally, the only thing that I remember of the fourth game against Tampa is Ovi desperately trying to do something for his team!

Ovie should take the criticism positively.

But, if you see every caps game. He tries more than anyone on the team and when no one tries even the captain loses faith in his team.

By the way, ovechkin has been getting back to his game now.
He has like 28 shots in the last 5 games.

Even in the san Jose game he was a big force and had 6 shots on net.

Another point holding his game is the line he plays on. Wideman on the powerplay shoots it more than 50% of the time when he has one of the leagues best shooters on the other side.

The caps desperately need mike green and backstrom back.
