ESPN video interview with Ovechkin and Maria Kirilenko
Lindsey Czarniak profiles Washington Capitals star Alexander Ovechkin.
Ted Leonsis goes after unnamed sources again (and rightfully so):
Alex’s mom and dad live in Russia – they come and visit a couple of times per year; they have been nothing but supportive to us and to the franchise. We have had exactly ONE business discussion with them, and that was during the renegotiation of Alex’s contract. They don’t meddle; they are just wonderful people; world class experienced athletes that love their son; and want the best for him. And for us. Alex is respectful to his family and when they come and visit – they stay together. Isn’t that great – he doesn’t ask his mom and dad to live in a hotel when they visit America. Wouldn’t you do the same? I know when my mom and dad came to visit me – they stayed in our guest room.
I wish they were here more- watching Alex play; he seems to have just a bit more jump whenever they are around; this past weekend – my wife and I were going to Tysons Corner, Virginia – and we want to see Alex’ s new home- I was quite surprised as the Washington Post reporter noted that Alex now lived in a “gated community”.
What does that connote to you? Gates, right? Privacy – walls up. A good metaphor if you have a point of view in an article. I was expecting guards and all that “gated community” comment entailed. However – it would have been nice if the reporter had actually driven by the house that he was describing, right?
Alex’s new home is in a normal neighborhood; you can drive by it – and park right in front of his home – like we did. There are no walls; no gates and no guards. It isn’t a gated community. He doesn’t even have a fence – there is a child’s out door playground located right next door that you see as you drive up to the home, in a neighbor’s home. Each neighboring home is quite close to Alex’s home. In fact – I hope he does get a fence and I told Alex last night – as Mark Twain once said – “Good fences make good neighbors”. That is great Americana.
By the way, not sure if Ovechkin's parents use Google to translate English articles. but that one, with unnamed sources, was actually translated in Russian media. My guess they got it.

The media doesn't have the right to say all that nonsense about Ovi and his family when they don't know anything about them. I think is clear now that his family only helps him to feel better. Also, Ovi is the only one who can tell if his mom is that controlling like some people claim she is.
Anyways, I'm glad that ESPN did that interview and that Ted responded again.
And the best response to that stupid article is Ovechkin's of course ;)
It's wonderful that the Caps have an owner who cares enough about his players to get the facts out. He shows respect for them and that's returned to him, not only by the team but by the fans.

Thank you Ted for sticking up for Alex and the truth. He and his family are nothing less than sheer class.
