Fans survive Caps victory over Boston

Caps players Dennis Wideman, Marcus Johansson, Michal Neuvirth, and Alex Ovechkin address the media after a 3-2 SO win over Boston Bruins

Ovechkin's stats:

2 assists, +2, total ice time 23:32, 26 shifts, average 00:54, PP 01:57, even 21:35, 5 shots on goal, 3 attempts blocked, 2 missed, 2 hits, 2 giveaways, 1 takeaway, 1 blocked shot, 1 faceoff lost

@VogsCaps:
- #Caps currently without a backup goaltender on the bench. Looked like Vokoun's injury was an accumulation rather than one save, just a guess

- Ovechkin feeds JOhansson perfectly on a 2-on-1 and #caps take a 2-0 lead.

- B's vut #Caps lead in half with just over three mins left. Krejci deflection of Chara shot. White-knuckle time.

- Ovechkin shanked prime scoring chance late in OT. For the third time in last five games, #Caps are headed to skillz where B's have advantage

Ovechkin reacts to his mistake. 3/27/12

Uploaded by LuvdCaps on Mar 28, 2012

Washington Capitals vs. Buffalo Sabres - Verizon Center - Washington, DC - March 27, 20102: Ovechkin's failure to control the puck resulted in a turnover and a short-handed goal for the Sabres. This was the turning point of the game and it was all downhill from that point on. Ovi's reaction on the bench pretty much says it all. The Caps lost to Buffalo 5 to 1.

I would not call it turning point (first two goals were), but it definitely didn't help the case.

Ovechkin is doing something cool

Our field reporter Emily has just sent a link "Ovi's doing something cool today"...

Somerville — This week, the City of Somerville is hosting several elite youth hockey teams for the first-ever “Transatlantic Invitational” hockey tournament, including youth from premiere Russian hockey leagues and youth from across the New England region. Five Russian teams – three Bantam and two Pee-Wee – have traveled to Somerville for the tournament

On Thursday, 30-40 participating youth, from Russian and New England teams, as well as members of the Somerville Youth Hockey Association, have been invited to meet with Washington Capitals star Alexander Ovechkin.

There are some typos and misinformation in thre article, but we all know Ovechkin is Moscow Dynamo's alumni, not Lokomotove Yaroslavl's.

If you wonder where is Somerville, Wikipedia is always there to help:
Somerville is a city in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, United States, located just north of Boston. As of the 2010 census, the city had a total population of 75,754 and was the most densely populated municipality in New England.

Update from our field reporter Emily:

It was very cool:
Ovechkin said he was more than willing to lend some time once he heard from Kontinental Hockey League chairman Andrei Kovalenko that the group of young Russian skaters would just happen to be in the Boston area at the same time he was.

“He called me and said that some of the Russian teams (are) in Boston and if you have a chance to meet them it will be cool for them. I said right away,” Ovechkin said. “For kids it’s going to be a memory for their whole life, and you never know maybe they are going to be future stars and they are going to play here.

“Maybe they are going to play with me or against me, and they will say remember that one time in Boston.”

Caps Captain talks about the game tonight vs. Sabres

Caps captain Alex Ovechkin addresses the media prior to tonight's game against the Buffalo Sabres.

Ovi:

Of course, it’s the biggest game of the year. I think it’s a pretty good chance for us to set the tone right away.

It’s not a secret. Right now we’re in a playoff race and this is a playoff game for us like the last five or six games.

We'll see what Dale does tonight. I'm ready for it. If I play 30 minutes the most important thing is we win the game.

(On tapping the belly) I have the same belly I had in the summer... No, not hungry

ESPN video interview with Ovechkin and Maria Kirilenko

Lindsey Czarniak profiles Washington Capitals star Alexander Ovechkin.

Ted Leonsis goes after unnamed sources again (and rightfully so):

Alex’s mom and dad live in Russia – they come and visit a couple of times per year; they have been nothing but supportive to us and to the franchise. We have had exactly ONE business discussion with them, and that was during the renegotiation of Alex’s contract. They don’t meddle; they are just wonderful people; world class experienced athletes that love their son; and want the best for him. And for us. Alex is respectful to his family and when they come and visit – they stay together. Isn’t that great – he doesn’t ask his mom and dad to live in a hotel when they visit America. Wouldn’t you do the same? I know when my mom and dad came to visit me – they stayed in our guest room.

I wish they were here more- watching Alex play; he seems to have just a bit more jump whenever they are around; this past weekend – my wife and I were going to Tysons Corner, Virginia – and we want to see Alex’ s new home- I was quite surprised as the Washington Post reporter noted that Alex now lived in a “gated community”.

What does that connote to you? Gates, right? Privacy – walls up. A good metaphor if you have a point of view in an article. I was expecting guards and all that “gated community” comment entailed. However – it would have been nice if the reporter had actually driven by the house that he was describing, right?

Alex’s new home is in a normal neighborhood; you can drive by it – and park right in front of his home – like we did. There are no walls; no gates and no guards. It isn’t a gated community. He doesn’t even have a fence – there is a child’s out door playground located right next door that you see as you drive up to the home, in a neighbor’s home. Each neighboring home is quite close to Alex’s home. In fact – I hope he does get a fence and I told Alex last night – as Mark Twain once said – “Good fences make good neighbors”. That is great Americana.

By the way, not sure if Ovechkin's parents use Google to translate English articles. but that one, with unnamed sources, was actually translated in Russian media. My guess they got it.

philly.com:
The loss was a crushing blow for the Capitals, who are clinging to life on a respirator with the eighth and final playoff spot, as they gained just one point in their lone game in-hand against the charging Buffalo Sabres.

On Thursday night, Bryzgalov said he tried to be patient against Ovechkin - who now has six goals in his last five games after another slow start this season.

"Not think," Bryzgalov said. "Just play."

Ovechkin scored once on seven shots, including his shootout attempt.

"It's always tough to stop guys like that," Bryzgalov said of facing his fellow Russian. "Like any other case, with Ilya [Kovalchuk], he's one of the best players in the world. If you give him the opportunity, he can score."

Alex Ovechkin on SportsCenter this Sunday

DC Sports Bog:

Former D.C. sportscaster and current ESPN anchor Lindsay Czarniak did a piece with Alex Ovechkin that will air on the 11 p.m. SportsCenter this Sunday.

From the press release:
Washington Capitals forward Alexander Ovechkin is known for being a dynamic playmaker, but this season his offensive production has slipped amidst questions about his commitment to winning and his team leadership abilities. Lindsay Czarniak has an inside look at the Russian superstar’s life on and off the ice, including rare access with his family, and how Ovechkin answers those who say his parents exert too much control on his life and career.

That is shocking :-(

How bad is Alex Ovechkin's season?

Sam Carchidi, Flyers beat writer:

For what it's worth, here are the numbers posted this season by left wingers Ovechkin and Scott Hartnell:

Hartnell: 35 goals, 29 assists, 64 points, 15 power-play goals, plus- 21, 130 PIM.

Ovechkin: 32 goals, 24 assists, 56 points, 9 power-play goals, minus-10, 26 PIM.

That IS shocking! Oh well, Caps are still in playoffs race, once there, everything can change for Ovi and that's all that matters.

To be fair, Alex has improved since All-Star break. For example, he was on pace for 32 goals season after the break, he already has 32 goals with 9 games left.

Caps 2, Jets 3

Caps player Karl Alzner, Alex Ovechkin, Brooks Laich, Troy Brouwer, Mathieu Perreault and Mike Knuble address the media.

Q.: What do you think about chants, "Ovi sucks" and "Crosby's better"?
Ovi:

I hear it. It's the fans. It's always nice when they talk about you and then get the chants. I love it. It's great for the league, it's great for us. Everybody thinks who’s better, who’s not. For me, it’s nice atmosphere and I love that kind of stuff.

Have to give credit to Winnipeg fans, they are obviously very knowledgeable hockey fans and they how to rile the opposing team. I wonder what they will shout when Cindy will play there? "Ovi's better?" Maybe not, but I an sure they will do something as nasty...

Again, Ovi looks fresh and upbeat. Jets better watch out. I predicted that before the last game and Ovi scored 2 with 1 shootout goal. Let's see how my prediction will work this time. :-)

Haha, Kirilenko's tapping racquet like a hockey stick! That's Ovi.

00:11 Maria taps the court with her tennis racquet twice and gets two minutes hindrance call. That's hilarious, exactly like Ovi did in the video below...

H/t to @Kiristea...

Alex Ovechkin's girlfriend Maria Kirilenko gives an interview to TennisChannel.com, March 14, 2012:

It must be hard to have a private life when you are dating a famous hockey player like Alex Ovechkin, so when you two go out you cannot have private time.
It’s not too bad. People recognize him, especially in America (he plays for the Washington Capitals and she spent part of the off season there), but he’s an easy going, nice guy. He gets bothered sometimes, but he doesn’t show it. He’s very relaxed.

Who’s your favorite Capital?
Ovi, of course. But I really like Carlson and Green. I was sorry to see Eric Fehr go. We were at Nationals game and my son sees Fehr and Carlson across from where we were. They couldn’t have been nicer to my boy. They’re just good guys.

So, are the Caps going to make playoffs or not?
I think, yeah. With Semin playing well and Green back in the lineup, I think Ovechkin has a lot of room here in the end to show up and play a leadership role and light a spark. They’ve played like a bubble team and maybe that’ll be enough to light a fuse, get in there and see what we can do.

You look at a team like the Rangers. They’ve been cruising along all year long. We know what that ride’s like. Let’s get in there and see what we can do.

Serious injury to Ovechkin during morning skate

Teammates surround Washington Capitals left wing Alex Ovechkin on March 15, 2012, as he lays on the ice after a collision with teammate Mike Knuble during a morning practice at Kettler Capitals Iceplex in Arlington, Va. (Andrew Harnik/The Washington Times)

@TarikElBashir:

- Ten minutes after Ovi left the ice, his equipment is not hanging in his stall. Probably still getting examined.

- Don't want to speculate here, but just watched video of Ovi after hit. He looked dazed on bench and wobbly as he walked to the locker room.

- It's believed Alex Ovechkin is still being evaluated by team medical staff. Did not meet with reporters, understandably.

- Knuble on collision w/ Ovi: "That was a lot of beef coming together [at] full speed. When people don't see each other, it gets dangerous."

Ovechkin gets examined and it is mostly likely the NHL neurological baseline test for concussion.

Good news, Hunter announced that it was not a concussion and Ovi will play in Winnipeg. Yay!

Chuck Gormley, CSN:
Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin left the ice after an open-ice collision with teammate Mike Knuble today at the Kettler Capitals Iceplex.

Ovechkin and Knuble were taking part in drills when the two collided around center ice. Ovechkin lay on the ice for about two minutes then took a seat on the Capitals bench for another three minutes, holding his head before retreating to the locker room.

“I can just speak from my situation and I’m worried, too,” said Capitals center Nicklas Backstrom, who has been sidelined since Jan. 3 with a concussion but has skated three straight days without symptoms. “We’ll see what happens.”

"Ovechkin lay on the ice for two minutes"!! This gotta be very serious. What's up with Knuble? He knocked out Brendan Shanahan a few years ago... Ugh.

ESPN:
Brendan Shanahan was hospitalized Saturday after a hard collision with Philadelphia's Mike Knuble that left the New York Rangers' forward unconscious on his back for several minutes.

Caps prospect Kuznetsov is likely to stay in Russia

SportExpress.ru, March 15, 2012:

The KHL's rising Star and the leader of the HC Tractor Yevgeny Kuznetsov is very likely to remain in our league next season, writes Sport-Express reporter Igor Larin.

"Frankly I've made a decision to pursue my career in the KHL," said the 19-year-old to Igor Larin during the KHL-TV "The Icing Show" which will be aired tonight. "At the same time It is not completely clear yet with which hockey club I will continue my career."

Source: http://news.sport-express.ru/2012-03-15/499635/

I wouldn't be surprised if he stays in Russia, money-wise and ice-time wise Kuznetsov is better off in KHL. Add to this his early marriage with a probability of having a baby soon and it is clear that staying in Russia requires much less effort and gives more stability to him.

On the other hand, Igor Larin has a "reputation", so until we see that video from KHL-TV's "The Icing Show" it is too early to consider it is 100% true. Besides he can change his decision as many times as he wants.

Alex Ovechkin scored two goals down the stretch, helping the Caps dig out of a three-goal hole in a 5-4 shootout win over the Islanders Tuesday night.

Ovechkin scored in the final minute of the second period, before tying it at 4-4 midway through the third.

The Caps have now won four straight and lead ninth-place Buffalo by four points in the East standings.

Via Capitals Insider:
Matt Hendricks: “The coaches said a little bit of something. But I think it was the leaders in this room that spoke up.”

“It’s different guys at different times,” Knuble said of the leaders who spoke up. “We knew we were in the game. We knew [the Islanders’ two-goal lead] wasn’t going to be enough.”

Dale Hunter said he wasn’t in the room. But the coach added that he’s glad the players took things into their own hands this time.

McPhee's interview

We've got the new face, a new sports writer covering Washignton Capitals. His name is Rick Maese and he comes from the Washington Redskins and the NFL world. But his very first article ("What's wrong with Ovechkin?") and this interview hits the bull's eye, he started Caps coverage writing about Alexander Ovechkin.

George McPhee on Alex Ovechkin: ‘The league has adjusted to Ovi; now it’s his turn to adjust’:

On a recent radio interview, you mentioned that his weight had fluctuated, that it was much higher than it is today. Can you clarify that? Was he coming in out of shape and overweight?
He came in a lot heavier. I don’t believe necessarily that he was out of shape. But he wanted to get bigger.

We all go through that in our careers, in terms of training. I think every athlete goes through it. What’s the best way for me to train in the offseason to be an effective player next season? You have to try different things. There are some times – and I went through it — you come back to camp and you feel early in camp or early in the season, geez, I’m not so sure what I did works. I thought it would, I went at it hard.

In Alex’s case, I think he wanted to play, he wanted to get bigger and he didn’t necessarily need to get bigger. I can only talk from personal experience because I was a small player. I wanted to get bigger. One year I came in 12 pounds heavier than what I normally play at because I wanted to be bigger. Early on, I didn’t feel right and just had to go back to what was best to play in, which was a lot lighter.

Alex came in heavier, expecting that it’d make him more physical — and he was — and better. But he wasn’t better. He understands that now. We’ve had the conversations with him. I don’t think we had to have the conversations with him because he understood by going through it.

We think he’s at his best anywhere between 225 and 230. When he came back, I think he was 240 or 242. He was crushing people, but he wasn’t as effective as a player.

He’s still strong at 225—
He’s an extraordinarily powerful guy. He’s a genetically-gifted person who has just incredible power. I think he’s more dangerous at 230 than he is at 240.

Nearly everyone I talk with has a different theory about why his numbers and production are down. But one thing I hear – they talk about his game not evolving, teams figuring out his moves. Has his game evolved? Do you see Alex working on things that would make his game different than three years ago?
As with any great athlete, the league will adjust to you. Your opposition is smart. Players and coaches always adjust. Players adjust to new rules quickly, they adjust to players quickly. There’s always a strategy to defend certain players.

We did it [Thursday] night with [Steven] Stamkos, we do it with other players, whether it’s Eric Staal or whoever we happen to be playing. There’s a strategy to use against them. What has to happen is that player has to start adjusting. The league has adjusted to Ovi; now it’s his turn to adjust.

So that’s where Ovi has to make an adjustment. He loves to score off the rush. He’s very effective scoring off the rush. He can score off the rush in ways other people can’t, where he can come down the blue line, go one-on-one with a guy and rifle the puck past you or go by you and score. Not many people have that ability.

So he still has that ability, but it’s not quite as effective as it once was. So what he has to learn to do is get it by defense and go in and forecheck. That’s an adjustment he’s working on. It’s not easy. It hasn’t come naturally. It’s not something he did as a kid. As a kid, it was all puck possession and rushing. Now it’s, make sure you hit it deep in their end and go get it.

We believe he can become one of the best forecheckers in the league because he’s fast and powerful. He can be a holy terror doing it. He can really intimidate the opposition. He has to learn to go in, get it deep, make contact, come up with it and then out-hustle people.

Rick Maese's first article ("What's wrong with Ovechkin?"), written in collaboration with Caps expert beat writer Tarik El-Bashir, is also very interesting, you've got to read it as well. Among other things they write about "young guns" growing apart, which we all know already, but the most interesting piece, at least to me, was about Ovechkin's mother Tatiana:
Those who know Ovechkin say his mother exerts considerable influence — good and bad — on her son’s life.

“That’s his biggest problem — his mom,” said a person familiar with the situation. “She did what she did for Alex. She played a huge part in his growth, in his career. But it went too far. I understand it’s family, I understand they’re very close — it’s not that. The question is: Is he ever going to grow up? I’m not only talking about hockey. She’s in his life in many other areas — relationships with girls, with friends, with everyone. It’s bizarre.”

Some close to the team suggest the family’s focus on money has put Ovechkin in a class all his own in the Capitals locker room. “No matter how much money the family earned, they were always, ‘It’s not enough, not enough,’ ” said one person familiar with the family.

Can you believe that Ovechkin's Mom is too controlling? You bet, it's always been the case. Oh well... Poor Maria, she will have to handle it... :-)

Update:
Here are Ted Leonsis thoughts:
It was frustrating to read this weekend’s Washington Post story on Alex Ovechkin because it contained so many references to unnamed sources. My assumption is (or should I say “my sources” tell me?) that many of those comments came from disgruntled former business associates and those who aren’t fans of Alex. We all have detractors, and high-profile athletes have more than others. That’s the nature of the business, and Alex recognizes that comes with the territory.

But it was interesting to see the Post blog George McPhee’s comments today. In many ways I thought this was an important part of the story that didn’t find its way into Saturday’s online version or the feature in Sunday’s paper. Too much to include? Too favorable? Too inconvenient? Not sure, but I’m glad George’s comments saw the light of day.

I won’t debate each point that I believe to be inaccurate or unfair, but I have to set the record straight on one thing: Alex’s parents have not meddled in our franchise. We have nothing but respect and admiration for them, and they always have been supportive and a positive influence.

Since 2005–06 (his rookie year), Alex Ovechkin scored more OT goals (11)than any other NHL player. Dan Sedin is second with 10. #nightCap

It's now 12 OT goals! Talking about Malkin, Crosby, Stamcos... hahaha

Another OT Game Winning Goal by Ovechkin

Bolts 2, Caps 3.

How shweet! Ovi scores in OT.

Since his debut in the NHL in 2005-06 Ovechkin scored 12 OT goals, more than any other NHL player.

This was one of the worst games by Ovechkin that I have ever seen. He was trying hard, maybe too hard, and was a fraction of a second behind for the most part of the night, making wrong decisions all the time. It was horrible to watch, but at the end Ovi did his magic again.

And that is what it counts, right? Hopefully it will give Ovi and Caps an emotional lift that is needed so bad now.

Ovechkin's stats:

1 goal, +2, total ice time 22:02, 22 shifts, average 01:00, PP 02:33, even 19:29, 5 shots on goal, 6 attempts blocked, 3 missed, 6 hits, 1 giveway, 1 takeaway, 1 blocked shot.

Check this out, he fired 14 shots! like in good old times!
