Ovechkin gets roughed up in the game vs. Ak Bars

Ovechkin gets cross-check in the head by Denis Kylyash.

With no enforcers around Ovi has to take care of himself. As we mentioned before "all you need is a low check on Ovechkin" and the player who did that gets immediate recognition. That's why Alex should protect himself by dropping the gloves next time and besides Ovi knows this is not the NHL and Russian players are not very skilled in fighting.

Send them a message, Ovi!

Ovechkin's first KHL goal

Dynamo lost on home ice 1-3 to St. Petersburg SKA. Ovechkin scored his first goal and played in two lines. His total ice time was 23 min 56 sec and he had 11 shots on goal. He scored the first goal for Dynamo on 15th minute of the first period and made the score 1-1.

  Ovi vs. Kovi

  Post game interview

We fought to the end. We didn't use the chances, we have to blame ourselves for losing the game They had more luck. The puck was bouncing a lot. I played in two lines, Coach trusted me. I felt good, tired a bit. Sometimes it was hard, but you had to get on the ice and I was giving everything.
On playing in Moscow: Moscow is Moscow, this is my home. I get home food. My parents, relatives, friends are watching it, so it's great. We had more scoring chances, but they scored more. I haven't been in Moscow at this time of the year, so I have to get used to the weather.
@JapersRink: Sick move by Ovi at ~1:58.

Is Ovechkin in more danger of getting injured in the KHL?

I think so. This is what today's article in Sport-Express by Andrei Kuznetsov says:

25-year-old defenseman Andrei Zubarev from Ufa was known to his fans only before the game vs. Magnitogorsk. Now the entire hockey world knows him. His body check against Malkin (in the brand style of Darius Kasparaitis!) has already became the hit on the internet.

That's right, all you need is a low check on Ovi and you will get total recognition in North America and maybe a contract in post lockout time. And you don't have to be 6'3" 240 lbs, even a small guy can do it.

Russian mentality is totally different than the Western one, it's about "expropriating the rich" and making everyone equal. That led to the Russian revolution in 1917 after which some became more equal than others.

Andrei Kuznetsov continues:
Hockey world in any league is self-contained and extremely jealous. More than seven hundred players of the KHL league are well aware about ten-digit amounts in the contracts of the top stars. Moreover 90 percent of those more than seven hundred players know that they are not destined to be in the center of attention, it will be Ovechkin and co.

Such inequalities make many openly angry. To hear this, talk without the recorder with any player from the Russian national team. And you will be assured that they are puzzled by the fact that it was a team work to win the World Championship gold in Quebec, Bern or Stockholm/Helsinki, but everyone only remembers the legendary Kovalchuk's two goal play or superplay by Malkin.
Alright, Ovi, you will be hunted there by your own countrymen. Be careful, save some for C-A-P-S.

First KHL game vs. Minsk Dynamo.
Ovi's gold shoelaces are back (he had white ones at the first morning skate). And he still has red'n'white Capitals gloves.

Alexander Ovechkin gave an interview after the first period of the game Moscow Dynamo vs Minsk Dynamo to TV channel "Russia-2".

What are your first emotions, feelings? I think the fans still don't fully believe that you are in Dynamo.
They'll have to believe it, I'm here. I am very happy to return to my home club, native land. A lot of fans are familiar. We play in Moscow; at home, parents are watching.

Are you happy with the audience that gathered at your first game after your return?
Of course. it's nice to see the fans. I think the stands are filled to 70 percent, maybe a little less, but it's still nice.

Ovechkin might not come back even after a year.

Alexander Ovechkin confessed that he did not enjoy reading that he was not needed to Moscow Dynamo, but said he was not offended and glad to play hockey for the home club. Here what the said to the Information Agency "R-sport":

"It's not that I was hurt, but it was unpleasant to hear. Every situation is changing for the better or worse, someone could say something, someone would not translate well, so I never take offense at such things. I'm not one of the people who might be offended. I will not hide, I did not like it when I read that the team didn't need me. But now it is in the past, I am in Dynamo."

Ovechkin admitted that he has not yet decided what to do in the case of NHL lockout cancellation.
"It all depends on what the conditions will be in the NHL. If they cut the contract, I got to think should I return or not.
Also, Ovechkin said that "it is possible" that he will play in the KHL after this season.
"We'll see, everything will be seen later."

Wow, did he wake up on a wrong side of the bed? Did Maria told him to sleep on a couch? Alright, man, just watch crude oil prices though. If they will go down, so will the KHL. Good luck.

Ovechkin switched to white shoelaces (video)

What's going on, switched to number 32, switched from yellow to white shoelaces? Come on, Ovi.

What Ovi said? He said that it's a pleasure to return to his alumni club. A lot of new guys, but he knows some of them from national and junior national teams. He stressed that Moscow Dynamo is last year playoffs winner and he doesn't want to spoil the chemistry, will do what the coach will tell him, etc.

He wrote the tweet before the UEFA Champions League soccer game between Moscow Spartak and Barcelona (barsi).

Ovechkin will be wearing number 32

Alex Ovechkin:

I went through serious negotiations with Moscow CSKA, but then Dynamo got involved in the negotiating process. We spoke with the president of the "white'n'blue" Arkady Rotenberg, and I decided to play for my alumni club. I will be wearing number 32, same number I played in Dynamo before leaving to the NHL.

The Dynamo's team doctor Valery Konov told Sovietsky Sport about the results of medical examination:
We didn't find anything that would prevent Ovechkin to play hockey except that his front tooth is missing. But he can play without it. Alexander's functional state is above average. From a medical point of view he is ready to debut. It is evident that he was preparing himself for the season very seriously.

Could it be a phone cenversation between the two? Who knows, but I don't believe Ovi was ever that adamant, at least not in the media.

Ovechkin will play for Moscow Dynamo during lockout

The Washington Capitals Alexander Ovechkin will play for Moscow Dynamo during the NHL lockout. The white and blue management decided to meet all the financial demands by the 27 years old Dynamo's alumni. The signing of the contract between the parties will be officially announced very soon. Ovechkin played for Dynamo since 2001 and then moved to North America after the championship season of 2004/05 during which the NHL was in the previous lockout.

Ovechkin is training with CSKA

No surprise there since he declined to answer the question who he was skating with. If it was Dynamo, he would answer...
Marie Lehmann ‏@svtlehmann

Ovechkin in talks with Dinamo & CSKA- ru media reports. I just saw Caps #8 bag in CSKA lockerroom.

Monday, September 17, 2012

Ovechkin will sign by Wednesday or Thursday

The Washington Capitals forward Alexander Ovechkin will continue his career in the KHL very soon. According to Sport-Express Ovechkin's KHL representative Gleb Chistyakov was actively engaged in the negotiations with two teams.

"We are only a day after lockout was declared, so please don't rush us with the result," said Chistyakov. "We are in a process of negotiations that is likely to be completed by Wednesday or Thursday."

Who is the most active in the negotiations?
It is CSKA. In addition Moscow Dynamo, Alexander alumni club has expressed an interest as well, though not in such agressive form as Red Army club.

Last week the owners of Dynamo made a series of reckless statements about Ovechkin. Does it interfere with your negotiations?
Some words of Dynamo's leaders really cooled Ovechkin's fervor. But I want to emphasize that after that Dynamo slightly corrected their position and it makes us happy. It's okay now.

There were reports on internet that the head coach of Dynamo Oleg Znarok didn't seem to be very interested in Ovechkin...
I have no such information. Conversely, Oleg Znarok, judging by the press, voted with two hands for Alexander to play for Dynamo.

Why are the talks moving very slowly?
The main issue is the insurance coverage matching ovechkin's long-term contract with Washington. We are talking about 100 thousand US dollars a month.

Whose chances better to get Ovechkin as of Monday evening, it is CSKA or Dynamo?
I am not ready to estimate the odds now. Let's just say, the intrigue is still there.

Ovechkin: A year long lockout is a reality

"If the league will not change its position the lockout will drag on for a full year," said Alexander Ovechkin in an interview with the correspondent of "Sovietsky Sport" Dmitry Ponomarenko on Monday. "We're not going to give in, too. It means I can spend the entire season in the KHL. It's a reality."

Ponomarenko: Who are you training with?
Ovechkin: "I prefer not to answer to this question. The rumors will spread immediately. I have not chosen the team yet. Let me just say that I am not going to delay the negotiations. For me the earlier I will start the season, the better. I understand that skating into shape won't be easy."

Happy birthday and more...

Valery Matveev, an agent representing Alexander Ovechkin, told izvestia.ru that negotiations with the HC "Dynamo" will be held today.

"Dynamo is Ovechkin's alumni club and it will be unethical if Alexander will go to any other team without offering his services to Dynamo first, the fans will not accept that", said Matveev. "The Ovechkin's contract negotiations are more complicated by the fact that he has to have a quite expensive insurance. Not every club can afford it. And, of course, it is important, what kind of teammates will be partnered with him. It is important for Alexander to have a good chemistry and fit into the team. We need all answers on these issues from Dynamo."

Ovechkin's representative also confirmed that his mother, Tatiana Ovechkina, already contacted the management of Moscow CSKA, who is very interested in signing Alexander.

The headline of the article says it all, "Ovechkin is expecting that Dynamo will give up on signing him to negotiate with CSKA".

Where is Ovi?

SovSport.ru reported that Ovechkin arrived in Moscow more than a week ago. But Sasha is not showing up anywhere in public, and is not giving any interviews. On Saturday he was expected for a sporting event at PFUR stadium where Washington's captain was invited by his friends. Ovechkin informed his friends over the phone that he was about to come. And then his cell phone disappeared from the mobile network coverage...

On the same day Sasha was seen with CSKA GM and longtime Capitals teammate Sergei Fedorov at the Ice arena at Leningrad Prospect.

Pavel Lysenkov called Sergei Fedorov, but the general manager of CSKA politely declined to be interviewed, "It is Sunday, I'm not in the office. Let's postpone the conversation to next week." The CSKA media relations service is not in a hurry for any statements either.

Pavel Lysenkov also noted that Alex Ovechkin's father Makhail has been seen a lot at the CSKA arena lately. But Mikhail lives close to arena. Oh well, signing a contract with CSKA could be a birthday present for Ovi, who will be 27 years old on September 17, 2012.

I am in Red Army now :-)

Ovechkin's weight update

According to CSNWashington (Sept. 7, 2012), "Ovechkin has spent the past week skating with teammates and has reported to informal workouts at 232 pounds, about 9 pounds heavier than he ended last year's playoffs."

In the last 4 years Alex weight was fluctuating around 230 lbs mark. Here's our March 1, 2012 post: "Ovechkin's weight according to GMGM"

Age Season lbs G A Pts McPhee's weights
19 2005/06: 212 52 54 106
20 2006/07: ? 46 46 92 218
21 2007/08: ? 65 47 112 224
22 2008/09: 220 56 54 110 232
23 2009/10: 233 50 59 109 237
24 2010/11: 234 32 53 85 242
25 2011/12: 230 38 27 65 224
---------------------------------
26 2012/13: 232

Caps media guide of 2011/12 has Ovi's weight at 230. According to George McPhee he lost some weight after that to 224. And now it is 232 lbs, is it good or bad?

Probably not good for KHL, haha...

Again, if someone has Caps media guides for 2006/2008 seasons, please email/tweet me his weight, it would be greatly appreciated...

Update: Bryzgalov, on the other hand, has lost 8 pounds as reported by Philly.com:
The 32-year-old goalie has been working out at the Skate Zone in Voorhees. He has lost about eight pounds from last season and is ready to play more like the netminder who was a Vezina runner-up in Phoenix.

"I did lots of training this summer," said a smiling Bryzgalov. "As you can see, I'm skinny and prepared."

If Ovi would lose 8 pounds, it would be 222 lbs, a weight closely associated with his best years in scoring... at the age of 21 and 22.

Kuznetsov: I don't know if they give up on me or not

Kuznetsov was interviewed by Sport-Express and here is a small excerpt about his relationship with Washington Capitals...

The Washington Capitals is not a difficult topic for Evgeny Kuznetsov to talk about, but Evgeny still frowned, thinking about it.

How did you tell to Washington Capitals that your move to DC was postponed?
I didn't say anything to them.

Did the Americans learn it from the newspapers?
I have no idea. And now it kind of hurts that I was not even invited to a summer development camp.

Would you go?
I very much wanted it. Just curious to see again how things are there. But I was not invited. Even if I could not go, it still would be nice to receive invitation. I don't know if they give up on me or not, but it is a bit strange...

Is NHL still a mystery for you?
Totally.
