There hasn’t been a World Cup of Hockey since 2004 but it sounds like its return won’t be too far off.
Pavel Lysenkov of Sovietsky Sport in Russia spoke with Vladislav Tretiak who says the World Cup will make its return in August and September of 2016.
Here are some selected quotes from Pavel Lysenkov's blog:
NHL invites us to join to the Transfer Agreement. They offer a certain compensation for Young hockey players coming form Russia. It's $240,000 for a hockey player.
Why we didn't sign it right away? It should be the clubs decision. I will bring this proposal to the KHL and we will make decision. Previously we didn't sign this agreement because our party thought that for a good player, who is chosen in the first or second round of the NHL draft, they need to be paid more. As of NHL, they think they should to pay the same price for everyone.
I was ready to sign this agreement in 2007. The negotiations were held with the Vice-President Bill Daley. But then we wanted to get a lot more money for Malkin than they offered.
Does NHL want to have the right to take our player at any time?
We have an offer that we can keep the player for 4 years (after the draft). The previous period used to be 2 years.
Will we benefit from it?
It's up to the clubs. But I calculated that for 10 years, during which time we had no agreement, Russia had lost $25 mil. So, think about it, do we really need the money or what?
And what about Sochi?
The NHL is not ready yet to declare the participation at the Olympic Games in Sochi as long as they have problems with insurance, with charter flights, with tickets; they want to get four instead of two. They want a family room, where the players guests will communicate with the hockey players.
"We will have to address all of these issues," told us the NHL representatives. "If we'll figure it out we will participate."
What's your hunch?
I think the NHL will participate. They have raised the questions that can be addressed. Although the same insurance questions, it's no small matter. It's a lot of money. Because it is planned that 130-140 best players from the NHL will arrive to Sochi.
When the league will announce the final decision?
I think in the next two weeks. We even know the dates when NHL is ready to interrupt the regular season; it's going to be Feb. 7, 2014, leaving to Sochi on Feb.8 or Feb.9.
Is it true that the NHL wants to revive the World Cup?
Yes, it is. They were interested in our opinion. I think this tournament is fun, and we will participate in it.
No. It will be in August-September. Now the NHL is thinking about the details. I've asked them, "Is this going to be in Canada only?" "No," I was told, "we want the Europe to be engaged too."
