Caps Postgame Locker Room 1/31/13: Matt Hendricks, Joey Crabb, Michal Neuvirth, Alex Ovechkin, Mike Ribeiro and Joel Ward address the media after a 3-2 loss to Toronto.
Bad start for the Capitals, bad start for Ovechkin. Already playing with a couple of plumbers on his side. Right move by Adam Oates?
Mike Milbury:
No, he is not playing with plumbers, he is playing with animals. Beagle and Crabb, these guys are good speedy players, but they are not very talented. You gotta find a way to put this guy with people that can give and go. Backstrom would a logical guy to put him with. You gotta find some quality center who can get him a puck. He didn't score till the last game and the feed was from, who else, Green. Those are the guys who gonna set him up. You start putting him with a couple of animals, he's gonna learn to bark like a dog himself.
Hunterize him, marginalize him, just like Dale Hunter. You might just as well get rid of him, trade him, he is a dog now.
Speechless... He actually is defending Ovechkin. Haha... Even a blind squirrel finds a nut once in a while...
But I have to say, I am guilty too, said the same things, but softer, gentler... :-) Here are my yesterday tweets...
22h TJ Овечкин @OvetjkinBlog
Oates: "Chasing the puck with the likes of Crabb and Beagle will really help Ovechkin to carry the torch at Sochi-2014" :-)
23h TJ Овечкин @OvetjkinBlog
Is this what in Oates mind? "No Backstrom, no puck. The legs feed the wolf. I can't promise @Ovi8 will score, but he will be in best shape."
New name for the line of Oveja, Beagle and Crabb... The Legion of Super-Pets!
"Not too many goalies can stop it," says Craig Laughlin. Agreed, Ryan Miller had no chance. Finally Ovi got the perfect pass from Mike Green and finished it. Ovi is no longer as explosive as he was, rarely beats defensemen one-on-one, but one thing he will never lose is his shot. His shot is a God given gift, you either have it or not.
- That was Alex Ovechkin.
- Yeah, no shit, that was Alex Ovechkin.
- I am just saying, he's still got it!
On the line with Jay Beagle and Joey Crabb Ovi looked lost, despondent. He can say whatever needs to be said to media, but his body language didn't lie.
And finally he got his wish in the second, he got re-united woth Backstrom and Brouwer on the first line. You could immediately feel his enthusiasm, he had a jump.
Turned out it was not even planned, haha... After the game Oates said,
We had a couple penalties, guys got caught out there and Ovi hadn’t had a shift in a while, I put him with Nick and Troy and I just said, ‘You know what, let’s just stay with it.’
Thank you, Coach!
What is funny, Neil Smith from NHL network said in the first intermission that with all due respect to Beagle and Crabb, Ovi needs to be put back with the players of his level, such as Backstrom, his long time center. In the second intermission he joked that Adam Oats obviously watched NHL network.
And for desert here Ovi talks to media after Sunday game vs Sabres:
I lied. Here's the desert "Alexander Ovechkin: The Electrifying Rookie Season"
No sign of him distracted or nursing hurt feelings, on the opposite, Ovi looks calm and confident. That's how the Captain should be, right? :-)
Alex says Kovalchuk hit him in the skate with his stick and that's why he tumbled. He even talked to ref about it and ref said if he would fall immediately without trying to skate it would be 2 minutes to Kovalchuk. Oh well...
Update:
As our reader Devi pointed out it was not Kovalchuk who chopped Ovi, but # 19 Canadian born Travis Zajac...
The commentator says, "He (Ovechkin) got tripped up, this time no call", but you can see it yourself, Zajac chopped Ovi (two-handed slash, like Bobby Clarke on Kharlamov :)
Ovechkin played LW, but with new partners, Jay Beagle and Joey Crabb. ...hmmm... According to Japer's Rink it is a fourth line, but RotoWorld calls it a second line. Head Coach Adam Oates calls it "not a first line" (in a post game interview he could only say "I wouldn't call it the first line.")
Moreover, after Ovechkin tumbled on the blue line in overtime Devils countered with Kovalchuk scoring winning goal. A total disaster.
Ovechkin had only one shot on goal and 1 hit, but was on receiving end of many Devils hits. That looked very unusual. Was he playing injured?
If Ovi is a shadow of vintage Ovechkin nowadays, today he was a shadow of his shadow. Ovi has one assist in 4 games and is -1. Alex Ovechkin, the Great Eight, has hit all time low, I would say.
Meanwhile, his former road roommate and fellow countryman Alex Semin had scored his first for Carolina. Yay? :-)
"We'll see... I think it's just a moment where we're struggling with our games. It doesn't matter what I'm gonna play: left side, center or right side, we just have to play the system what Adam told us. We just have to be mentally ready. It's not about one player or two players. It's everybody."
Like we've mentioned in previous post, Kovalchuk's right wing adjustment had cost coach MacLean a job. As for the Devils, they missed playoffs for the first time in many years.
Alex Ovechkin 1/25/13
Caps captain Alex Ovechkin addresses the media prior to tonight's game against the New Jersey Devils.
The students have fun from one exam session to another exam session. Even if these students are active athletes. And how do they pass the session? Here are the stories about famous university athletes from the director of the Institute of Sport and Physical Education (RGUFK) Tamara Mikhailova and assistant professor of hockey dapartment Alexei Davydov.
Tamara Mikhailova:
Alexander Ovechkin is a University child, our favorite. His aunt is a department instructor, Mom did a lot for the university. Some instructors know him since he was a little kid. That's why it was so funny to watch him. As a freshman Sasha had a star attitude. Once we decided to scare him, we put him in the lists for expulsion. So he instantly rushed to the university. I remember he was sitting in front of me shaking, but he completed all the tests and exam session.
Alexei Davydov:
Alexander Ovechkin and Ilya Kovalchuk were for the teaching staff as a balm to the soul. It was because they were interested in working with us. The boys were learning the sport from the different side realizing that they were not some robots, that each of their brilliant efforts could be explained in scientific terms.
I still keep their notes, and sometimes I show it to some re-missive students in class. Look, I'd say, who was here in this class, worked hard and tried hard. Now it's your try!
Sasha and Ilya liked to practice with the children. It is true, they did not immediately liked it. At first it was difficult; a star athlete, but can't make contact with the children. They were upset, were asking for advice. But from one hockey clinic to another they started to work like real children's coaches.
Most of all I remember the diploma thesis defense. Sasha is usually a jokester, but here he was sitting at the desk in a shirt, jacket, hair tousled, shaking. I told him, "You are winning the world championships in front of millions and are not afraid. And then what, you are afraid of ten instructors?" Both Ilya and Alexander defended their diploma theses with an A. It's because they're hockey geniuses and are head and shoulders above any theorists.

To remind you, Alex Ovechkin is still working on his master's degree at the same University.
Ovechkin talks to Russian version of NHL.com on Jan. 22, 2013.
Impressions about the end of lockout
Ovechkin: Was happy when lockout ended, but frankly thought that I would finish the season with Dynamo, had good relationships there it was sad to leave.
On short season, abbreviated training camp
Difference, only 1 week, not enough time to play, to feel each other
New coaching staff
You feel energy, everybody is interested to learn new system.
You've changed the systems like 3 times in the last 3 years.
I'd say the new system is like 60% offense, 40% defense. Everyone, both defensemen and forwards participate in offense.
On playing right wing
We talked about it. I have good relationship with new coach, we decided to try how I would feel on the right.
Leonsis declared that he would let you go to the Olympics no matter what
It good (smiling).
At the end you can see Alex Ovechkin getting into his batmobile, that makes low frequency noise more like a tank, and leaving the scene. A half year later Batman returns, scene one. :-)
Now fast forward to January 25, Friday 2013, after three loses with two of them at home, Caps face the New Jersey Devils. Here's Ilya Kovalchuk interview after morning skate:
Kovi talks in monosyllabic voice and with the same facial expression through the whole interview. He is asked about the Caps, he answers (blah, blah), and then he is asked if he faced Ovechkin in the KHL, "Yes," he says, "only once". "How did that go?" is the next question. "We won, 3-1," answers Kovi, with the huge huge grin he can't hide.
Here's a good read from Fire and Ice blog, "Alex Ovechkin moving to RW not only idea Capitals coach Adam Oates is 'stealing' from Devils"
What was interesting to read that it took Kovalchuk a long time to adjust playing right wing. During that process coach MacLean, who started it, was fired. :-)

2012 * 2013 Washington Capitals official media guide has arrived.
And you know what we are looking for... :-)
Alex Ovechkin is listed as 6'3" and 230 lbs. Kinda strange, in the KHL he was listed at 218, 12 lbs less just few months ago. Did they really weight him? :-) Oh, well...
01-19-13 Alex Ovechkin
Caps captain Alex Ovechkin addresses the media at the morning skate prior to tonight's game against the Tampa Bay Lightning at the Tampa Bay Times.
Ovechkin:
It's gonna be emotional game, it's gonna be exiting game!
Do you live an active life and inspire others by your example? Are you trying to make the world around you better? Tell us at www.coca-cola.ru and you might be eligible to carry the Olympic flame.
Ovechkin:
Оставь заявку на участие в эстафете олимпийского огня прямо сейчас. Торопись, осталось всего несколько дней, и они пролетят очень быстро.
Sign up for participation in the Olympic torch relay right now. Hurry, only few days left, and they will fly very fast.
Congrats to Maria Kirilenko for advancing to the fourth round of the Australian Open after defeating Yanina Wickmayer 7-6, 6-3 on Saturday.
After the game the announcer asked Maria about her engagement with Alex Ovechkin, he couldn't even pronounce Ovi's last name! Haha...
"There's no ring? where's the ring?" Maria retrieved the ring from the bag and received a standing ovation from entire audience. Got goosebumps watching it? Awesome!
GM George McPhee was on ESPN 980′s The Sports Fix this week, and Thom Loverro asked the GM how No. 8 looks physically.
“He looks really good to me,” McPhee said. “He’s probably 230, which is usually where we like him, and he’s been playing [overseas].”
Then Loverro asked about No. 8′s mental state.
“I think there’s a maturity about Alex that we haven’t seen before,” McPhee said. “And it may be he’s 27 now, but he’s also engaged. And he’s not going to be living the way he used to live. And that’s ok with us.”
As Ovi commented, "it's not the same after engagement, she fiancee has a tennis rocket, and she can hit hard with it." haha...
How accurate was GMGM assessment of Ovi's weight? Here's our post on that:
Ovechkin's weight, according to KHL.RU (2012/13), is 218 lbs (99 kg). That is significant weight loss, 12 lbs! His height is 189 cm or 6'2.4". Last season official Capitals media guide had him at 6'3" and at 230 lbs.
GMGM was wrong by 12 lbs, but it's a good wrong, not the other way. :-)
I can't wait for official 2013 Washington Capitals media guide though, this is where we get our moment of truth.
"Are you nervous?" says Ovechkin to the kid and continues, "Everything will be super."
Well, Ovi is excited to be the torchbearer at Sochi-2014, but it might be all for his participation in Olympics if NHL won't allow the players to go there. Why? If you would read our post few days ago, you'd know that "it won't happen because René Fasel won't allow it."
Oh well, we cross the bridge when we get there, right?
Ovi talks about it after morning skate on the 4th day of the training camp.
Well, we had a pretty good interview by CSNWashington with Alex Ovechkin, where he talked about engagement. Now it is Maria Kirilenko's turn...
How can you evaluate your first match?
I won it and it's all that matters, so I was very happy (laughs). Although any start of the "Grand Slam" tournament , especially early in the season, is difficult. Also it was windy on the court today. And the wind was constantly changing direction, it took some time to find my game and its rhythm. When I got it, everything went right.
How was your preparation for the season?
I worked on the usual plan, changing only the place of training. This time it was in Moscow, at CSKA and on the courts of one club on Rublevka, where I was given a very good condition to train. Of course, the season is just beginning, and to assess the work carried out is still difficult. But I feel good enough - both physically and in terms of pure tennis.
You went to his first tournament of the season in Sydney after the New Year's eve. Don't you think that such a late arrival in Australia is a risky business?
I knew what I was doing and realized that the first few days would be hard. But we had already decided to celebrate the New Year at home together. Besides the tournament in Sydney I traditionally see as a preparatory competition and never really performed well there. However this year I passed the starting round, even that for me is an achievement (laughs). And then there was enough time to properly acclimatize and prepare for the Australian Open.
Your engagement with Alexander Ovechkin, which became known in the last day of 2012, provoked a flurry of responses. Can you share with us some details?
In principle, Sasha and I were planning to announce our engagement early. But then we decided that the most appropriate date will be December 31st. Our parents met that evening together to celebrate the New Year, and we presented them with a surprise. Sasha announced to everyone that we decided to get married.
Did he ask your parents permission?
We are dating for over one year. In the summer Sasha traveled with me to tournaments and communicated with my dad very closely. And when we got home, he met my mother. There was at once a mutual understanding. I think his parents liked me. In general, the relationship between all of us have developed wonderfully, everything went smoothly enough, and eventually led to our engagement.
So you were not pondered for too long to give the answer to Ovechkin?
Honestly, I said yes immediately. From the very beginning there were strong feelings between me and Sasha, so it would make no sense to show off (laughs).
Do you play the games wearing the ring he gave you?
Not really. I take off the ring because it interferes with my play a bit. It's hard hold the racket.
Have you set a date for the marriage?
Not yet. I went to Australia almost immediately after the engagement. And Sasha later went to America, as the NHL lockout ended. But we think about the date of the wedding right now.
Do you want to organize it this year?
We'll see. All things are possible (laughs).
Admit it, when it became known that the NHL lockout ended, were you happy or upset?
We both spent a lot of time in Moscow, and it was good. I was home for the past two months, which to me is very rare (smiling). It was interesting to watch the KHL games. Probably Sasha got some experience as well. He liked to play at home, in the presence of relatives and friends. Still it was clear that the lockout would end sooner or later.
Now, between tournaments, will you go back not to Moscow, but to Washington?
Yes, of course.

Here's a great interview by CSN Washington with Alex Ovechkin, Part 1 and Part 2.
In Part 1 they asked Ovi how he proposed to Maria:
Did you get down on one knee?
Yeah.
Really?
Yeah.
But hey, we wuz there, the pic is better than 1000 words! :-)
@hockeyshopped
In Part 2 Ovi talks about the coaches and particularly about Dale Hunter and his system. "Of course sometimes I felt trapped," said Ovi. Though Ovi didn't enjoy it, I think it was a great experience for him. He once joked that all he learned from Dale's system was blocking shots. And he actually really started doing it a lot more often. After Caps were eliminated from playoffs, Ovi went to World Championship and the Russians noticed it too, how many times he went down to block the shots.
There are reports from the morning skate that after Ovechkin collided with Marcus Johansson, he went to the locker room and returned later. Marcus was back on ice, Ovechkin didn't practice and was replaced by Eric Fehr.
There's a big deal about Ovi practicing on the right wing in the media. He has done it before many times back when Boudreau was in command or even with Dale Hunter. When Caps played Boston, Ovi played right wing to avoid Zdeno Chara. Nothing new...

It's a sad moment for KHL and their fans, the lockout is over and Russian NHL stars are leaving. Obviously Pavel, who had interviewed Slava Fetisov, is upset as well and talks about it with Slava.
Published on Jan 12, 2013
12.01.2013. Матч звезд КХЛ в Челябинске. Вячеслав Фетисов дает интервью Павлу Лысенкову ("Советский спорт").
What Fetisov says here?
He wishes Russian NHL players good luck, getting in playoffs and coming back to play for the national team.
Fetisov: "We'd love to see the same scenario like it was in Vancouver when the home team had won the gold medals. Obviously we want the same for our team in Sochi. But there little we can do to affect NHL decision to send the players to Sochi, especially when lockout is over and new CBA is signed for the next 10 years. There's only one way, and it is only legal way, to get the players to Sochi. Even if the guys say they will come to Sochi no matter what, unfortunately it won't happen because René Fasel won't allow it."
About Datsyuk and Kovalchuk who stayed to play in All-Star.
He praises them, at the same time saying that others [read Ovechkin - tj] had their own reasons to leave early.
About getting Datsyuk, Malkin, Kovalchuk back to KHL.
Fetisov says with new CBA there might be a possibility to buy out Kovalchuk's contract from New Jersey. He says he didn't read it in detail, but everything should be done officially. There are the laws, the world order, and all civilized people follow it.
Pavel: "Last question about Alexander Ovechkin (@11:40). He is a big figure. His contract is for another 10 years. And what is important, he really wants to play in the NHL, flew to US on the first flight. It is probably impossible to get him back to KHL, is it?"
Fetisov: "Never say never. Over there he achieved probably what he was dreaming for. He still competes, for example, with Evgeny Malkin, he has ambitions. But if he will be called by national team, he will come and play hard. As of coming back [to KHL], it depends on situation, and situation changes every year. And guessing to say that Ovechkin will never play in the KHL... I wouldn't do that..."
Bonus video:
KHL All-Star: Both Captains compete in figure skating, LOL.
Evgeny Kuznetsov wins fastest skater (@6:30) in his home town Chelyabinsk beating among others Nikolai Zherdev (#2).
Kuznetsov clocked 13.82 and improved his personal record of All-Star 2012 by 0.05 and surpassed the KHL record by 0.04 established a year ago in Riga by Miķelis Rēdlihs (13.86).
Kovalchuk's team: Sergey Plotnikov - 14.06. Tim Stapleton - 13.98. Nikolai Zherdev - 13.94.
Great Pavel LYsenkov of Sovetsky Sport had an interview with Dynamo's head coach Oleg Znarok. Here's the excerpt from the interview published January 12, 2013.
Why Ilya Kovalchuk is still playing for SKA, and Ovechkin flew to Washington on the first flight?
Sasha had an injury, he missed the last game due to a bruised ribs. Then the Capitals called and he was obliged to go. He in fact has the contract in the NHL.
I don't know what the situation is with Ilya. Maybe his contract is different... Sasha could play with Ufa and Nizhnekamsk. And Leo Komarov too. But we have no hard feelings. The guys helped us a whole lot.
With Leo Komarov it's all clear, but Sashka Ovechkin? I was surprised how much he is a team player. It was a feast for the eyes!
There was a rumor that in the national team Vyacheslav Bykov had problems with Ovechkin...
You have to be an insider to know what's going on. But this is all speculation, rumors. I know Vyacheslav Arkadievich for a long time. He is a great person. And don't think he had any problems with Sasha.
Alexander Ovechkin admitted that for him to work with Gillette in the past two years is a great honor. "The philosophy of Gillette is close to mine," said Ovechkin. It's every morning's successful start and convincing victory. Cooperation with Gillette for me is primarily an opportunity to show by example to every boy that nothing is impossible, and to help them to grow up to real men, strong and courageous."

It's just that Sasha is nursing a small injury. He wouldn't play vs. Salavat anyway. He needs a medical treatment, and we did not feel the need to keep him.

Just learned that Alex Ovechkin will arrive in DC later this afternoon.
Because of the time zones difference he will be in DC 2-3 hours later, i.e. left in the afternoon in Moscow, landed in the afternoon in DC. But if it is not a direct flight, it could be much longer.
Here both (Aeroflot and Delta) direct flights leave Moscow at 1:10PM MT and land in DC on 3:30PM ET. The flight time is 11 hours 10 minutes.

Ovi sez that Backie is still limping, can't skate... Also talks about the incoming game with Torpedo.
Dynamo beats Torpedo 3-1, Gynge, Ovechkin, Granyak scored for Dynamo, Zaynullin for Torpedo. Semin had 4 shots on goal (1, 1, 3), Ovechkin had 7 shots on goal (5, 2, 0) and this is his 19th goal with total of 40 points (19G, 21A).

Ovechkin:
"Moscow Dynamo has its first morning skate of the year 2013 in Novogorsk. After the New Year we have the same roster, same guys. It was the first time in 13 years that I've celebrated the New Year in Moscow with my family and relatives. All guys (in our team) are happy and rested.
An important event has happened to me, I proposed to Maria Kirilenko. I am very happy and pleased (smiling). I made a very serious step."
[Another player Denis joins and says, imitating female voice, "Yes" (я согласна)]
Ovi is laughing and nodding his head "It was just like that, it was just like that" and then continues...
"Well, we are preparing for the game vs Torpedo. We will be playing in Balashikha because we don't have our own arena. We hope that we start year 2013 with the victory. We hope that fans will join us in Balashikha, we understand it's far away from Moscow, but we need you. Hope to see you tomorrow."
